USPTO changed its rules in 2013; prior art only counts if it was patented first. This is why Nintendo has been trying to patent stuff other companies are doing that is similar to their games (eg PalWorld).
Part of me wishes Nintendo was doing this to lose on purpose so there is precedent to not use this against them in the future, but I’ve become far too pessimistic for a “good-guy Nintendo” arc…

This was already the inevitability of Android; Google was just willing to spend 15-20 years to achieve as much market dominance as possible. They fought off Palm webOS, Windows Mobile, Linux phones are just now materializing, iOS is huge but having one major competitor isn’t a problem. Now that “the reality of the world means more security is needed” Google will work their way out of any openness they once had. Perhaps even someday their own hardware will be the only game in town. They’re already by FAR the worst company when it comes to harvesting data and profiling you.

This might signal a fundamental misunderstanding of what AM radio is used for and why it’s important.
Yeah lots of propaganda talk shows and up there because AM sucks for music and it’s cheap to run and dead simple to implement.
It’s also used for emergency broadcasts and traffic updates, and it’s a resilient form of broadcast technology during disasters that the public should have easy access to.
You think WhatsApp is going to be up after a hurricane? AM can broadcast hundreds of miles, 5G needs antennas every couple blocks with hardlines to back them up.
Fuck outta here with this “hurr durr it’s only for racists” nonsense.

For normal activities this absolutely exists, and when you are just being you on the internet, a nation state could easily track you down.
However, it’s exploitable and avoidable. Probably not entirely, but if you want to you can make their life difficult.
They won’t stop until your digital identification cryptographically signs every packet you send, I guarantee it.

What makes you think your device has anything to do with it?
It’ll be Netflix, your bank, the DMV, email clients, forums, reddit, TikTok, Facebook, Intuit products like TurboTax and Quickbooks, various GIS systems, mobile providers, app stores, games, rideshares, food delivery, amazon, twitch, X, they’ll probably make some laws that Lemmy has to be blocked unless they do it, etc.

Yeah for most projects the only time you need a workstation-class machine is to cut down on compile times. Every time you make a change and run you have to compile; a process you do possibly hundreds of times per day benefits immensely from even being just 1-2 seconds faster
