I mean something new as in let someone else have a try. 343 has been failing constantly. Letting them keep trying probably isn’t going to solve the issue. It’s worth trying literally anything else than having them keep at it.

I would argue that it probably does give better odds for it at Activision. They already have CoD. They don’t need to turn Halo into CoD. They can just use Halo to do something new.
I think I remember that they made a CoD with like mech suits or something, and a lot more movement mechanics, and it wasn’t received well. That’s basically what Halo is. Now they can go fully into that without CoD players complaining that it isn’t CoD.
I don’t have much faith in this, but I do think there’s better odds for a better Halo with Activision probably. 343 didn’t get it. Activision may not, but doing something new has to be better than continuing to fuck things up over and over.

I don’t think banning it for the underage is specifically bad, but it can’t be enforced without some bullshit that is bad, and won’t work anyway. However, I think it’s plenty bad for adults too. It either needs moderation, or it needs to be not allowed in general. I’m all for people being allowed to do what they want, but there are points where consumers need protections, and algorithms manipulating them, in the way social media does, is very harmful and needs protections against.

If I’m understanding it correctly, and I’m pretty sure I am, it requires a witness, like I said. That witness has to be trusted to not reveal any information. The receiver doesn’t get any information theoretically, but it requires that someone check your ID. That’s pretty obvious though because how else could it work?

Even if it’s secure (no software is ever 100% secure), it can’t be anonymous. How could they verify your ID? Maybe they theoretically don’t store the record, and the checks after the first don’t provide it, it can’t be anonymous or it’s worthless for ID verification.

Sure. Sexual orientation is defined as the innate attraction though. It’s the attraction you have to someone you see walking down the street. Obviously the right kind of interactions can overcome this and make someone attracted to someone they weren’t originally attracted to though, or vice versa.
-
on Queer discourse rule in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 17 Sep 2026
No? That’s demisexual. Pansexual is you’re attracted to all (pan- means all) types of people, which is effectively equivalent to bi. Note attraction does not mean you like that person. You don’t even need to know someone to be attracted to them.
-
on Queer discourse rule in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 17 Sep 2026
Yeah, the only way pansexual makes sense, to me at least, is if bisexual excludes feminine presenting men and masculine presenting women, but I don’t see why it should. I feel like pan was just created either to make certain people feel like they’re being more inclusive than just normal bi people, or to make bi people feel like they’re being exclusive.
A lot of the gender and sexual orientation language of recent times is good and removes ambiguity. Some of it though, like pan, feels like people just treating it as a contest.

I wouldn’t be as annoyed by hearing about it if Rockstar were an upstanding company. The union busting though means they should not be given any good PR at minimum, and ideally none.
I don’t care if people want to discuss big games. We shouldn’t accept positive discussion of games that are made by companies who treat their employees poorly. That should be a bare minimum rule people on this platform hold to. I don’t care how excited you are for the game. You don’t get to promote it.

The way phone data works, they have to get a warrant. They aren’t legally allowed to obtain it from phone companies until they have one, even if the company is more than happy to provide it. How this doesn’t automatically apply in the same way to these cameras is crazy.

Sure, but if you think the entire French resistance was organized then you don’t really know what you’re talking about. There were plenty of individual acts. Insisting it must be organized, and then insisting that it must meet a certain level of organization, is only insisting that nothing is allowed. All revolution requires a certain amount of disorganization, or everything is centralized and is easy to topple.
Also, nothing in the above said for it to be unorganized. You previously only insisted acting outside the justice system is wrong, and now you’ve stepped back from that stance. It’s progress I guess, but you don’t see the bigger picture yet.
The media’s “all violence is evil” propaganda insists that the state has a monopoly on violence. They’re allowed to use it to keep us in line, but we can’t use it to keep them in line. The reality is that there should be no solid line. Every individual will have a certain tolerance and threshold for violence. Literally no one is at zero for both. Everyone knows violence must be used sometimes, but they disagree on when and by whom.

When people no longer trust the justice system to provide justice, they end up relying on alternatives. Is it the ideal solution? Obviously not. However, I’m not going to sit here and say the French resistance was wrong because they didn’t have the backing of their government. There’s obviously a gray area where anyone would agree it’s acceptable and not.

I made a statement on what they should do, for best results from employees, not on what they actually do. It should also be true for all other industries. I think all company profits should be shared with employees, and ideally owned, if not totally then at least in part, by employees. Give them a stake in the company, and a reason to care about how it’s doing, and they’ll put more effort in.
The fact this is incomprehensible to the capitalist class isn’t surprising though. They view humans as resources (hence the Human Resources Department), not as people with their own wants and desires.

I haven’t played much of XCOM 2, but the late game of all of these games is usually not the best. Honestly, this is true for most strategy games. How many Paradox games actually make it to the end, for example?
It’s essentially something that’s impossible to balance in a fair way. Either the game scales automatically to match you, in which case your effort is meaningless, or it doesn’t, and it’s either trivial or impossible.
I just started a new game recently though. When I last played the end game didn’t even exist IIRC, so I can’t comment on it.

Honestly, I don’t understand why any studio wouldn’t do this. Not only does it mean you can differ some pay until later effectively (obviously you still need to be competitive, because people don’t like gambling with their livelihood), but it actively encourages devs to make the best game possible. If they’re just working for a salary, they have no skin in the game. Give them a reason to make the absolute best thing they possibly can make.
-
on The studio behind Star Wars Zero Company, which is currently a Steam bestseller, has reportedly furloughed the majority of its staff in c/games@lemmy.world · 2 Sep 2026
Check out Xenonauts 2. It’s positioned as a spiritual sequel of classic X-COM, rather than modern XCOM, though so there are differences.
Probably the best difference, and I don’t understand why modern XCOM did this, is classic and Xenonauts have larger squad sizes. This is huge, because the entire genre is about gambling on actions. If you only have four actions, taking a 50% shot, but potentially being in danger, is an issue. If you have 8+ actions (8 squad members minimum, and you’ll often get multiple actions per member), a 50% shot is a lot less risky. It’s more about setting yourself up to get many attacks, rather than one perfect attack. There’s a lot more opportunities to mitigate risk.
It also has a much stronger strategic game, which I feel is largely lacking in modern XCOM. It’s all about tactical battles. This game, in particular, I think is almost entirely tactical battles, with little strategic opportunity, and no strategic layer IIRC.
-
on The studio behind Star Wars Zero Company, which is currently a Steam bestseller, has reportedly furloughed the majority of its staff in c/games@lemmy.world · 2 Sep 2026
Yeah, this isn’t reasonable. A good studio will have been preparing for what they’re doing next before the project is finished. Keeping a team together who knows what they’re doing and already knows how to cooperate together is worth a lot. This is just a sign of bad management, and sadly they’re not the ones losing pay.

For anyone who wants this style of game, but doesn’t want to support this, Xenonauts 2 released version 1.0 a few months ago. It’s trying to be more classic X-COM, rather than modern XCOM, like what this game is copying (and simplifying even more). It’s easily the best of the genre I’ve played, and it’ll also run on pretty much any system you’ve got fine.

It has some correlation, though 2008 wasn’t because of the stock market. It was an issue with loans and banks. It affected the stock market, and caused a large downturn, but the stock market didn’t cause it.
I’m not educated enough in 1929 to make a comment, but I believe it was similar there. The stock market crashed, but it was an effect, not a cause. It can be an indicator of bad things happening in the economy, but it is not the economy.

“The economy,” in this sense, is bullshit. The media uses the term and the stock market interchangeably, but the average person doesn’t. The value of the stock market has zero correlation in the well-being of the average person. It’s only “the economy” for the wealthy, who have significant amounts of money in stocks. Most people care about cost-of-living and income. Neither of those depend on the value of the stock market.

One interesting thing I’ve found is that legacy windows support is better on Linux through WINE/Proton than on Windows. Old games are more likely to be runnable on Linux than Windows.

One key thing with switching is knowing you will have trouble with it at first, because it isn’t Windows. You’ve spent probably decades learning Windows. You can’t expect to switch to Linux and automatically understand how it works. Be prepared to learn. Don’t expect it to be Windows. Unless your problems were crashes or hardware failing, it’s probably just that you didn’t have experience with it, and that needs to be ok.

You can’t totally brute force it, but you can brute force certain words IIRC.
But yeah, it’s basically a Metroidvania where combat is replaced by puzzles, but that’s my point. Souls-like is just a trendy new way to say Metroidvania. I literally can’t think of a functional difference between them. Every Metroidvania I think could just as well call itself a Souls-like, and vice versa, and nothing would change. I remember DS1 being called a Metroidvania originally.
The difference is almost purely aesthetic. Like I said earlier, possibly the only real distinguishing factor is RPG mechanics, but there are examples of games using either genre description with and without that, so I don’t think it’s required.

-
on A touch of AI is all it takes to trigger backlash, as a promising new indie falls afoul of slop skeptics in c/technology@lemmy.world · 26 Aug 2026
That’s not what I meant. I meant that the core experience will be good if it replicates what the Souls games do, which is why they’re successful. Many “Souls-likes” replicate the combat, and it sucks. Honestly, the DS1 and Demons Souls combat is pretty rough, but they revolutionized gaming, and the boss fights weren’t the unique thing they were doing. Boss fights like them have existed forever.
If you look at the older FromSoftware catalogue, you can see what makes their games special. The older games have incredibly clunky combat, but they still have the core exploration loop. There’s a hand built world with care and thought put into every detail, and the game gives obstacles that get easier if you engage with the world and explore. This is often with items or levels, but it’s sometimes just with information. This is what makes a Souls-likes, and the copycats that fail are missing this (or they just didn’t make an interesting world to explore). Hollow Knight isn’t great because of the combat. The combat is fine, but it’s the interesting world that’s begging for you to engage with it that makes it compelling. That’s the core of Souls-likes.
-
on A touch of AI is all it takes to trigger backlash, as a promising new indie falls afoul of slop skeptics in c/technology@lemmy.world · 26 Aug 2026
There’s something at the heart of them that makes them interesting. It isn’t just “exploration”, but a particular style of exploration, which will not fail. It isn’t just boss fights with dodging, because having that alone doesn’t have the heart of a Souls game. The exploration alone could, but yeah, obviously it has to be done properly, not just “exploration”.
Realistically, can’t both combat and exploration be foundational elements of soulslike?
It could. I honestly don’t think it is. Sekiro is also a Souls-like, and the combat is very different. I’m pretty confident you can make a good Souls-like with no combat. The combat, in my opinion, is there to give you a reason to explore. It’s there to be a challenge, where exploring is the key to overcoming it. There will be items and secrets that make the combat easier if you search for it. It’s not required, but you’d need something else to take the place of this.
Chants of Sennaar comes to mind of something I’d consider to capture a lot of the spirit of Souls games without combat. They’re obviously very different games, but I think they share a lot. You can try to brute force your way through, but you’re encouraged to explore and engage with the world, and discover it, which makes the critical path easier. This is the goal for both Souls-likes and CoS.
-
on A touch of AI is all it takes to trigger backlash, as a promising new indie falls afoul of slop skeptics in c/technology@lemmy.world · 25 Aug 2026
Yeah, that’s the bad understanding I’m talking about. It’s a purely surface level view of them, and it’s not what makes them interesting or popular. There are plenty of games with that that suck, so it can’t be the foundation of what Souls-likes are.
It’s also a mechanic that Metroidvanias classically have too, so yeah…
