• The danger of false-positives is surely looming here, but I can’t really criticize it while having no better, more flawless, solutions.

  One thing to eradicate would be the social stigma of just being accused of something. Which not always means one is guilty of the accusation. We should treat those equal to others until their guilt is proven, if possible.

  People seem to be fine to be transparent and 24/7 surveilleid with their phones. Some even seem to be fine to install doorcams from US-bigtech or spy-devices that can switch on a light. Heck, they even pay for those!

  This at least is a vers useful application of privacy invasion.

• And that’s the nonsense about it. We’re not talking about cars or such, but a general concept. And most likely take one or two specific applications of it and use it as a definition of the thing itself. And even with cars you couldn’t condemned them because tanks exists, and ignore ambulances or such.

  Also, it’s usually the exact same group that also mostly uses products of what they hate so much. Microsoft, google, Facebook or any us-american bigtec. If LLMs would be as bad as they say it is, stop funding it. Simple. Really really simple. I don’t use any of those, so it’s possible to actually protest besides big word and vote by wallet.

• Well, tbh, if someone has an opinion that isn’t swayable by facts, why should I take that person seriously? It’s like talking with religious nutjobs. They already have all “answers”.

  The facts are clear, relatively simple, and accessible by everyone. And “evil” is generally considered bad. But LLMs are not just “that precise one thing” that could be declared evil. It’s a concept. The application of it changes the good/evil attribution. Chatbot? Obviously bad. Helping to determine cancer in a Patient? Good. Etc.

  If people don’t WANT to argue because they already joined a “AI is the devil”-cult, so be it. Not my job to convince anyone of anything 😊

• Just because it was a nicely worded statement, doesn’t make it universal.

  I use a local LLM for our smart home. It wastes a Lil bit of energy, which is still faaaar below my 1500W while gaming. Is gaming evil now? It helps dramatically in ways that were never possible before like “turn on all lights at 40% in the color purple and also turn on music. My fav playlist” followed by a “no, use a warm color and close all windows”.

  Not every LLM is a fucking chatbot that eats the planet to “create” a shitty cat-meme for Granny’s Facebook.

  Don’t assume everyone uses silly chatbots. That is ONE application of LLMs, and it is indeed stupid and kills out environment for basically no benefit.

• “Ai” isn’t inherently evil. It’s just a tool. An incredibly interesting and marvelous tool, in theory.

  What we make of it and how we use it matters. Noone needs stupid chatbots. People should only be allowed to use them after graduating an exam of what they actually are and how they work. In the current state they’re 90% bullshit and harmful.

  But LLMs surely have great and reasonable applications. People often fear what they don’t really understand. And LLMs really are a topic that often even “techies” don’t get, so why should a layman.

  Yes, they are environmental Desasters. But try to substract all the trillions of silly nonsensical queries millions of people hammer into chatbots, that once were simple search-engine - queries. And it’s not THAT bad anymore.

  Know what a tool is for, how it works, how you operate it, then use it for the best possible application in the optimal way and be disappointed just partly, not completely.

  It’s like trying to use a bike to drive backwards up a mountain with one foot on pedal and one behind your head. Chances for success are slim, but not zero!

• It’s awesome! Totally! Not just for gaming though. It’s a “normal” Linux too.

  But a yr ago I tried it on a 2ND nvme and left winblows there for “when nothing works”. I am a massive nerd, with many self written tools and I have a very precise demand of my machine and how it behaves.

  Never tried Linux desktops. Only ever uses it for servers.

  Well, the windows drive is still there, but I never ever booted it again. Even made a VM of it for super-quick emergencies. Never started it.

  Everything works the same or better. Most of my tools were basically fixing windows, don’t need them anymore. And except destiny2 I can game every game with basically zero problems.

  And I game at least 5hrs a day. Sometimes a but of tinkering is helpful (rarely needed). Especially if you want to run a side-app like cheatengine or some map-tools or whatever else.

  Long story short: cachy is awesome! Being a German adds a nice bonus flavour.

• Blaming consumers for AI doesn’t truly track to me when these companies feed into each other’s profits like some kind of snake of Ouroborus. Gamers never asked for ai. Games just became another place where ai is (unfortunately).

  But this is exactly what you get for “not caring for anything but raw performance and features”. You get features that noone asked for and especially features that’ll bind you into their ecosystem. They tried since forever. Hairfx, physx and now dlss/“ai”.

  You’re right though, I might sadly add. People don’t care. 5090 is fastest? Then 5090 it’ll be.

• And I boycotted steam’s avidly for the first years because I knew what will happen and how they will kill physical games and the 2nd-hand-market (and the lending of games) for the poorer.

  Caved in with left4dead2 finally and am now at like 20k games. And was right. Both markets are basically dead and I joined the devil.

  At least, as long as they’re not going public, they enrich gaming a bit, as they’re not just a sales-platform like epic.
