• Amazon and adafruit lists it for around 120-150 USD now so yes. 200 for one with a case and charger, etc.

  I don’t know what those services are they look sketch to me so that screen shot means nothing to me. Even if they are legit I doubt they will ship to me. Or if they do ship it me its going to cost 80 dollars and take 3 months.

  Theres generally a reason why it’s so cheap.

• If you already make a recycling run to the scrap yard its worth doing. I got 120 bucks last run just off old PCs and it wasn’t even that much, you just get more when you separate it. Aluminium cases, ram, motherboard, hard drives, CPUs. The older they are often the more they are worth, and if you are into eBay selling im sure you could make a killing. I heard even DDR 3 is coming back so who knows anymore.

  Only thing you shouldn’t take is TVs you have to pay to get rid of them. Maybe don’t take appliance too. some people do, for example fridges have a few valuable components but I would not reccomend it. You end up with plastics and other junk sometimes and have to pay to get a dump run.

  A lot of it only makes sense if you can store a pile until it gets big enough to be worth a trip out.

• I have two spare 8th gen Intel PCs I saved from the garbage bin, and a old gaming desktop that I now use as the server. So if I need a spare server I’m probably going to use one of those. I can get USB to gpio so been thinking of trying trying that route more considering how often people get rid of old pcs. I have a stack of windows vista-7 era laptops I was going to take apart for scrap too which could be used.

  I bought the pis a long time ago, each time a found a project for one I was sad I didn’t have one to play with and kept buying more. They aren’t really even in use now. Ones built in to my work station and occasionally I boot into it and use raspberry pi imager to flash ubuntu or something on a USB. Its useful to have just ready on occasion. I have a hard time getting rid of them because of use cases like that, and in have a lot of hats/accessories for them like the ai camera. Even though I’m not really going to use them like I used to anymore.

• Again in theory I want ubi, but as I see it, its a way to reduce benifits.

  Maybe the more I think about it I don’t like it I’m not sure.

  At its core ubi adds flexibility, and the ability for people to manage their resources at their own needs. At the same time that’s part of the problem. Already social security doesnt cover it, there’s people in their 70’s still working at Walmart and thats including disabilities, healthcare, and food stamps if they still receive all those. I think UBI is better for private corperations to step in and capture that money instead of trying to assure peoples needs are met.

  I just don’t see how in the world we currently exist in how its going to work out. I feel like major structural change has to come first and we are better off with things like universal healthcare, state housing, etc.

  That way it provides state/federal jobs. Often people critize goverment workers for being lazy, slow, and decently paid. I say yeah that’s the point. If we are facing job loss having a form of guaranteed employment is nice. And having some inefficiency is good, providing a work life balance and not expecting ai to 3x peoples work loads is good for society.

  Welfare shouldn’t be this ai ran numbers maximizer for effiecency.

• You all can just wire up your own cameras to your own stereo screen. Preferably you have rca or some form of input. Many of them are better quality, or you can get different types like a screen in your rear view mirror. You have flexibility/repair ability and you can keep it on while driving if you wanted. You can place it on the top of your car for a better view, or get a camera with higher FOV. Still can do android auto through USB because your phone just does that.

  Its not even hard, its just tucking wires behind the plastic trim, and you have to take apart your dash a little. Maybe its hard to do the screen/stereo if you don’t have a wire harness but whatever you buy usually comes with one. Your system can be as cheap or nice as you want, and you can get whatever features you want like a microphone for calls, or a DVD player, USB storage slot for pirated music/movies. You can get some with android auto pre installed if you need that. All the cheap ones feel cheap and slow. I prefer the cheap cartoys vibe shitty os from like a late 2010’s high end system. 4:3 screen, lots of nobs, lots of inputs. But solid and doesnt suffer software issues that bug me.

  Theres so many accesories for older cars especially if you have a car with a cult following. To make them modernish. Many people still lust over older jeeps, Toyotas, Honda’s depending on what kind of car nerd you are, and they have tons of anything you can think of. You can get blind spot detectors and complete dash/gauge replacements if youre lucky.

• I’m not anti berni in anyway I don’t think hes malicious in any shape or form.

  Just now that topic is on ai something I’ve been a little more tuned into I’m noticing the cracks.

  I’d still support much of anything he is pushing for, because frankly he has much more lived experience for me and despite his lack of knowledge in some areas, vastly out performs me in all others.

  Theres things in too stupid to understand, I’m not a economist, or a historian etc. I’m just some dude on the internet who spends too much time politicising everything. Maybe I’m wrong about things, and Bernie’s one of the few that has earned enough trust with me where I would be blindly faithful. Like if he spearheaded a successful anti Ai, pro socalist movement theres a lot I would kind of feel I have to go along with, just to keep mom/dad or the kids from fighting in the family. If that anology makes sense.

  I’d still spout my long winded over opinionated wall of texts on Lemmy and stuff, but I’d vote or go along with things I don’t nessisarly agree with if I seemed like it at least brought us a little closer to where we should be.

  I still don’t trust when people talk about UBI though. (Not us I assume we have the best intentions here, but politicians, news ankers, podcasters, etc) Tell me the plan to make ai pay for it, and ensure me all social welfare service are intact and I’m all for it. But bribing everyone with cash to get rid of health services is insane. These companies have made every little thing as addictive as possible to extract wealth out of you, and that UBI check is just going to end up back in the hands of people like polymarket, fentenal dealers, and fast food companies.

  Like we should do things like reducing the cost of fresh fruit and vegetables on food stamps so people could get more benifits while encouraging healthier eating. Instead food stamps have been dramatically reduced and require people to work. Well the poorest of the poor often don’t have a home, and due to that they can’t work.

  What’s worse is people like RFK are talking about bringing in labor camps, as if the prison belt wasn’t making enough money from forced labor of the underclass. So we are actively creating yet another extractive/exploitative system which profits off of the suffering of the people who have it worst.

• It doesnt have to remove all the social welfare programs but every single time its mentioned in a discussion that’s how its described to work. Not our discussions but think tanks, podcasts with politicians, news talking heads, etc.

  Also if we keep losing the welfare services we have now due to ai, what makes you think suddenly they are going to be okay with adding more. Especially one of such massive scale to promise every single human cash money.

  These people keep using the term effiecency as if welfare needs to be some profitable thing.

  As a study of what these Ai people think we should look at asha sharma who used to hold a position at the Ai division at Microsoft, who recently took over as the lead for Xbox.

  She is there to pretend they are doing compromise and working for the people, yet at the same time cannibalizing the product they are working on to further chase the all mighty ai dollar. Xbox game pass the cloud gaming service keeps hiking up prices, making ad tiers, and now adding 25 hours a month limit to how much you can stream. Xbox game pass is already doing the worst it has, and Xbox doesnt want to make game consoles anymore, meaning game pass is all they have. All that compute at the data centers is getting repurposed for Ai, leaving xbox to die on the vine. Potentially bringing down all the developers that it bought with it.

  Asha sharma was recently asked to be apart of some federal reserve task force. If you ask me that sounds like she is going to be incharge of the same exact thing. Canabilizing the system she was meant to “help” and funnel those profits to ai.

  And asha sharma is just the name that’s in my head right now, this is practically everyone on goverment, or the head of a buisness. When they talk about UBI, its not because they believe in some greater good, or want their companies to get taxed more to pay for it. No its because it benifits them in some way. The system is pay to win, and people can easily be manipulated into fucking themselves over because they don’t want to think two steps ahead.

• I’ve had a few critisims with Bernie with what hes saying about ai recently.

  I don’t want to discredit him because I feel hes doing what he thinks is best, and honestly is kind of all we got for a big name right now. The people in the anti Ai space that I look up to havent really reached the average American you interact with daily in real life.

  I think much like all the other politicians he doesnt fully understand the technology, and hes coming at it from the perspective he always has had. Which is protecting workers from corperations, and pushing for more socalist causes. Which I still think we need desperately, I’m not trying to say otherwise.

  What I am concerned about is that Bernie is in some shape or form aiding these Ai companies in some way.

  Like pushing for Ai devs who try to create agsi to be sent to prison for 20 years sounds great but then you realize that Sam altman and elon musk agree with him, and you wonder why. Regulation capture? A morally ethical excuse to slow down when ai is hitting brick walls in progress.

  And with the idea of a 4 day work week, and ubi. In theory yes I do want those, but if you been paying attention to the conversations around Ai and stuff like ubi you learn that in order for ubi to work they have to remove social security, healthcare, food stamps, low income housing which cost dramatically more than the measly check you will receive every month. Thats my worst nightmare, everyone only gets 600-800 a month and is left to fend for themselves in a world where ai manipulates them with dark patterns into lighting national Forrest on fire so they can get rich on polymarket. Or they have to use the claud slot machine to pay for multiple spins on a chance to get working code for their gig working job, that takes a 30% cut ontop of all the api tokens.

  So I’m torn in some ways because I’m worried that the path through all this is riddled with mine fields, and we could some how end up in position worse than we are in now just due to how much people are pushing for ANYTHING right now.

  The change I ususally see fit is much more radical and not really realistic, and I don’t see the general publics mindset really catching up for a few more years. And in two years the landscape could of changed dramatically.

• You not using newpipe/peertube etc?

  Not trying to force you to do something you don’t believe in your don’t want to use, but generally I just type the title in and video shows up. Links used to copy paste and work but havent for me.

  Only downside is if you switch in and out of PiP mode, or rewatch a unfinished video 12 minutes in YouTube will ban your IP for like 6hrs. Which is trivial with a VPN. I think switching from full video to pop out mode essentially refreshes the video load, and starting a view mid way through must be suspicious or bot like.

  If its a fresh residential IP that’s not already been flagged, or you havent made too many gmail accounts already then it might still work. You might have to buy a new device completely and then it works. But I am doubtful, I don’t have the resources to test all of that but from what it seems they’re locking out all the methods.

• You cannot create a gmail without a phone number these days. There used to be work aroubda where you sign up for a gmail via youtube or on a smart TV (don’t advise the smart TV one), but I’m sure that doesn’t work anymore.

  I think if you don’t want the gmail associated with your phone number you just have to buy a prepaid phone. If you live in a country where you can’t pay for prepaids with cash and without an I’D, then I don’t know. Welcome to the ponopticon I guess.

  I can’t vouch for those paid SMS services, they seem like a scam to me.

• It should be noted that the input of all human knowledge is getting the door closed and locked behind it. Requiring you to buy tokens to access said information.

  And if you refuse to provide more training data to their services that collect said data, like reddit, facebook, x, then you can’t access essentially the entire internet. With google locking down captchas to only “verified” android phones. And every website requiring you to sign up with a ID card, and locking you out when you use a VPN.

  So not only will your jobs will be taken away but your autonomy and access to what used to be free information. Or not even information sometimes your job or access to a services requires you to use these things. Even just getting into your apartment with a RFID reader on your apparments official app. You have to exist in their panopitcon just to even exist in many situations.

  Oh and the best part the only thing worth money in the ai industry is all your user data and how it gets fed into palantirs networks. From every single comment you make on their services, and everytime you order a cheese burger in public, that all gets logged because you are a domestic terrorist for thinking maybe we should hold these people accountable.

• Just for reference we used to forcefully institutionalize the unwanted of our society and send them to medical facilities where they where medically tortured and experimented on. After world war two the more superior natzi doctors we absorbed through operation paper clip took this further and that’s where we get all the Mk ultra lore.

  The laws where set up so if you where black you basicially couldnt be outside in public/loiter. It effected anyone who was disenfranchised/a vagrant but many of the laws stemmed from racism first. There where lots of little weird laws like you can’t stand around outside without a dollar in your pocket. Essentially if you where not a white American home owning man with a job, and you where just outside, cops had some excuse to get you off the street and into jail or some institution. And to get thrown in a mental institution things like being homeless or a prostitute was considered being crazy. There where so many ways to jail you or put you in essentially what is natzi medical institutions that absolutely remove your rights. Everyone loved eugenics back then it was considered a science like medicine, and now we have people like RFK that want to bring that back.

  Its pretty much exactly how the prison complex works just back then they got the added bonus of experimenting on people for the sake of biological, and psychological war fare, and we had to do small stuff like teach a kid to studder and pyscologically torture them for their disability and make it worse. There where so many rapes at these places too. This is where most of our major medical/pharma companies really took off.

  Like I cannot express how we where doing essentially the same thing the natzis did in the concentration camps, because much like ai, if we didnt do it the bad guys would first. We need our evil companies to dominate the world. I’m not trying to lessen the inpact of the holocaust but trying to convey how there was a thin line between us and them, they just had more direct targeted racism, and much larger scale. Most of the world was like that, much like how today much of the world is turning very anti-imagrant and right wing authoritian. Japan, Australia, much of Europe/England, etc, its not just the united States build the wall types anymore, it feels like every nation is pushing this weird mindset at once at a time we are trying to force everyone to get I’D verified to use the heavily survalienced internet. And for what? In the states we have ICE buying out massive amounts of old prisons as if we are going to infinitely expand this operation. I don’t know what for, or what other nations are doing but it really feels like we are escalating to something.

  Now we got RFK taking about rounding up vagrants, removing food stamps and medical care from people who don’t have a job, which is extreamly hard to do when you don’t have a house or car, and forcing them into labor camps. We have survalience state networks not just flock, and that’s getting all processed through systems at or like palantir and its making logs of everyone, and the homeless and disenfranchised are the first to experience the full brunt of that force. We are essentially going back down the same route and setting up the same system.

  Fucking deep space nine predicted this would happen with the bell riots like two years ago or something in their timeline of the show.

• A tractor is still something on my list I want. I think I’d only ever be able to afford a old one like yourself and I imagine the relationship with the tractor to be adversarial at all times. Never use it until you need it and then you have to fight with it to work.

• You want to look into frigate, and you don’t need much of a graphics card. You could use a old gaming PC with a gtx 1060 from 10 years ago.

  There’s cameras with tensor cores in them too. I only played around with the pi ai camera but frigate uses the same yolo models. so you can have your camera process the image detection or the server’s GPU.

  It doesn’t take as much as you think. Its when you want to generate content that its important you need lots of vram or cram the entire model into context.

  I am the biggest ai hater I know but local models, and old school ai technologies before LLMs are pretty cool.

• This is the way to go. Once you get a stand up air compressor that spits out enough cfm its a real game changer. I don’t even have that many air tools outside of nail guns. Just having solid air for dusting made it worth while for me. I’ll get distracted for hours using my tornado air whip and airsolizer.

• Hardwired tools are generally better in both terms of performance and reliability. If you really want get Amish about it you can convert a lot of eletric tools into gas tools and buy them like that.

• Before you buy anything make sure you research it first. Start buying things that you own the infustructure for. Don’t buy a 3d printer that doesn’t support Linux, or buy a 3d printer that won’t be effected by the 3d printing laws that try to stop gun parts from being printed.

  That logic should apply to everything. If you are buying a IP camera make sure to get one that does PoE and doesn’t connect and ping hone to a server before sending you your data. Don’t buy a WiFi garage door opener unless you installed the ZigBee switch yourself. You should aim to be able to do everything yourself without needing subscription models or useless internet of things devices.

  Things you likely want now before they get further ruined:

  A google pixel phone to flash and de google.

  A car before ~2013 that you plan on learning how yo repair when it breaks down.

  A AMD based PC with a a 16gig GPU. Thats like the absolute lowest end you can use LLM’s and defuision models locally that don’t completely suck ass. And if you’re not much of a gamer or desktop user you can turn this PC into a server and run your own services in docker so you reduce your dependency on apps.

• I have a pirated legacy, and SE version I zipped up with all the mods that work for that version. I’m so tired of Bethesda updating a nearly 20 year old game, so they can resell it again.

  Sense I’ve played the game with mods there have been two big instances where Bethesda decided to be greedy and break hundreds of thousands of mods. There used to be so many good mods that just don’t exist anymore and where crazy intense and they’re all lost to time.

  The games nearly 20 years old it doesnt need to be updated every year to resell the game. Bethesda hates the mod community anyways they keep trying to figure out a way to weasle their way into free mods and put a paywall between you and their content.

  Most people that use mods these days for skyrim don’t even use a script extender. Their idea of mods is the mod menu built into the game which is really only reskins, and stat changes/cheats. We used to have ship houses you could build, and drive. There was so much insane big mods like that, and they just don’t exist anymore.

  Eventually Bethesda won’t let you mod their game, and its going to be a built in “mod manager” which is devoid of any useful features. If you haven’t had to use fnis, skse, etc then you are not modding the game.

• Elons response when his csam generator generated deep fakes and csam of kids was " we are looking for the people who did this ". No mother fucker it was you who did this.

  As if he had 0 responsibility for the release of the csam generator, and took absolutely no precautions on trying to prevent it from happening. No other major LLM company has this issue, and the amount of negligence is on par with leaving a loaded gun at the playground in a park.

  What’s even worse is instead of immediately shutting down the csam generator elon instead made it so only paying members can generate csam. When people complained again that people where still actively generating csam he simply removed that function to be available in the united States or the uk. So now when someone generates csam of your kids you won’t even be aware of it.

  Now elon musk is fighting at every instance to fight for his right to be able to generate csam. Including suing states.

  Trump says this is legal, and he has pressured states to not make any laws against ai in any shape or form, essentially making it illegal to stop elon musk from making csam.

  This is what Ai boosters call a modern marvel and amazing life changing technology.

• For the most part you can’t really do demanding gaming on a pixel. For emulation and playing PC games you pretty much need a snapdragon.

  Most mobile gaming people do are with apks through the playstore and flagship phones from 8~ years ago can still run those games pretty much maxed out besides frame rates. Pixel will play your call of duty mobiles and gebshin impact fine.

  Even recently I learned termux now allows gpu pass thorough on snapdragon phones from 610+. Most projects I cone across favor the 645 if you don’t have one of the new series. And those chips are ancient and still put up good performance even if it is short lived due to thermals/boosting.

  Not saying its not possible or you can’t have a good experience with things like gamecube. I think for most people you really don’t need anything past like a oneplus 5/6 in terms of specs. Just if you wanted to get into fex/switch emulation you are probably going to want to go with a snapdragon device. They have arm based hand helds with dual screens and controllers built in, and just having a dedicated device for gaming might be a better option. Out side of that having a more performant phone has minimal improvements to your average experience, in the play store there isnt much of anything that can really utilize it. There’s maybe 5-10 graphically demanding games, and they where all made to work with phones from 10 years ago.
