Are mini stick PCs practical to set up as a media player, eg with jellyfin? Some advantages are the small form factor that plugs straight into the HDMI port, and flexibility/privacy vs using a dongle from a shitty company like amazon/google/roku.
Are there any things to watch out for to ensure it has enough compute power and hardware decoding? I just want it to play HD video with a jellyfin app/browser page.
I’m assuming it’s no big deal to install Linux on (x86 hardware?), do you need to watch out for specific device support? Thanks
What kind of numbers do they need?
Looks like a handy flag
So… tar x should really be a separate program than tar c? They’re doing different functions
I’ll give it a try. I’m a bit surprised it’s needed since the VPN excludes local network connections anyway
What’s the alternative?
I don’t get it
Ooh good to know, if this works
How do people deal with this, do you turn off VPN whenever getting in a car?
To an extent, but the claimed future growth is just that, a claim, and companies like Mag7 and the whole AI industry and priced at eye watering levels above their actual earnings. Keep in mind that those reported earnings also include circular financing, for example they report it as earnings/profits when one of their AI investments/subsidiaries goes up in stock price, even though that does not represent actual trade with consumers. There’s a whole lot of smoke and mirrors covering the real value
It’s a Keynesian beauty contest, prices go up because more people put their money there. If they keep it local that also improves the local returns
Weirdest name choice, I’m guessing the sketchy managers were all having a big laugh about automating brown people
Sure, but no way I’m buying a google product for this, I’d much rather a diy approach
It’s just for a client, the current approach I’ve been trying on a pi 2B isn’t working well enough so a bit more power would be good. The 2B only has H264 hardware decoding but osmc+Kodi+jellyfin/jellycon doesn’t seem to allow transcoding and the 2B just doesn’t have enough power to play other formats.
Maybe another option is to run the dedicated JF desktop app in a GUI, because at least you can tell the server to transcoder to a suitable format that the pi can play. With the stick PC a full wipe and install of some lightweight Linux system would hopefully also work
Interesting, good to know that there are open source / privacy respecting (seemingly) options out there
I’ll give it a try. I think it suggests model 3B somewhere but can try it with a 2B
Dammit, now I’m gonna see(/hear) that every time I restart a service
Ok, I’m going to try and wipe it and put a lightweight Linux system on it, it’s a lot cheaper than a 4B pi (although a 3B may be possible), will see how it goes
Good to know
I tried using the pi 2B again, I’ve been using the GUI & browser to show jellyfin and the interface is so sluggish I think it would be hard to use regardless of the ability to play videos
Ok interesting it looks like it does do 1080p H264 hardware decoding cdn-shop.adafruit.com/…/raspberrypi2modelb.pdf
Pretty sure I tested mine on video playback and it struggled (quite badly), but I didn’t check the playback format, maybe if you stick to the right codec then it works.
Do you know what number model it is? I tried using an old 2B but it was too slow and doesn’t have hardware decoding as far as I can tell. I’ve heard you need around 4B for media playback, but the price is not so great for a simple use like this. Stick PCs seemed to have some cheaper options, including hardware decoding, with the advantage of plugging straight into the HDMI port
Ok, I’ve been checking out some older ones for half the price (possibly used as well), the main requirement I’ve been checking is just hardware decoding, with a light weight Linux setup I think it should be sufficient.
The remote is worth considering, I might look into Bluetooth or RF based approaches as they are a bit more flexible than IR with positioning. Or even phone app based methods are possible
Thanks for the suggestions anyway ;)
Earlier this year, Andrew, who works for an Australian company that sells AI products to businesses,
Funny how every time this happens its someone trying to sell AI. The coincidence is a bit too much to take this seriously as oops I just wanted to book a gym class
Coal plants emit more radioactive particles than nuclear. The amount of waste really is tiny in the bigger picture, far far less than other industries produce, and it’s not that big a deal to store it.
Nuclear really is a clean industry in every sense , especially when compared against the amount of energy produced. Solar etc etc all have waste products in their manufacturing and disposal , and you need a looootttt of solar panels or wind turbines to match the power output of a nuclear power station.
The biggest issue with nuclear is cost, which is high compared to other options.
