• We had a set for close to 7 years, until the drum of the dryer broke, we reached out to LG to have it replaced, and they told us we could not just get the drum, that they only sold the whole motor and drum set. We were about to move to another house, so just threw the dryer away, gave the washer to someone, and marked LG on the list of ‘Companies that will never see our money again’. Thanks for the tip on Huebsch, I’ll certainly look into it since we’re almost done building our house now and it’s the best time to get all the appliances.

After a few months Deezer will start removing content that you will have access to over the winamp subscription, or winamp will pull an Amazon and insert ads into the paid subscription, call it basic subscription, and ask for more money for premium without ads.

• This is what it’s about. My daughter started reaching sites I had explicitly blocked in her phone and our home network (OPNSense + AdGuard Home) using a VPN.

  I dis not blame the sites, or the ISP, or even the VPN provider. She has a PC and Phone because we, her parents, allowed it, so that’s on her for choosing to circumvent the security implemented, and on US for providing the means.

  So, she has no access to any technology until further notice. Why the fuck does everyone have to pay because some of us are not parenting correctly?

  I certainly don’t want any company or government deciding what my kids can or cannot have access to, that’s my role, not theirs.

• With Tesla you can’t really do that, whatever account is registered as the owner (she transferred the ownership from her account to his) is the only one that can add and remove others to access the car via the app. The only other way is to show Tesla you are the actual owner of the car and then they can switch it back to your account. • Yeah, this is a fact, however, the servers used by these companies to server clients are either in the US, Europe or China. The rest of the companies are either Japanese, South Korean or American, and those companies all have to follow US laws on surveillance if they want to do any business with US citizens. And then there’s the fact that every single one of them has Oauth via Google, X and meta to use the services. So, 90%+ still sounds like the correct number. I could be wrong, could be.

• I believe that you are both correct. 8 to 10 years ago I realized how much data these companies and governments gather about me, and it scared the shit out of me. I was not aware before that, so I had Alexas all over my house, smart devices, a Samsung SmartThings, the works.

  Then my slow walk to privacy started. My home is fully automated now, down to the sprinklers, but it’s all via Home Assistant, frigate for my cameras (inside home assistant), not one of my IoT devices has access to the internet, they live in an isolated VLAN, and I haven’t had any mainstream social network account or WhatsApp for over 8 years now.

  The fact is that a lot people don’t care because they don’t know, like me back then, but finally knowing is what jump-started this path.

  I do agree that there’s no helping someone that doesn’t want help, that’s a hard fact, but if we do move this information around, we stand to “cure a few normies” along the way.

• I had the coral already, and for the purpose it works pretty well. Still have to see how well it handles 11 cameras. The reason I need the TPU is because the recognition is done by frigate, not by the camera.

• Exactly this. As much as I hate the current AI scenario across the board, the GOS team has shown, time and again, that they are stellar developers and coders, that they genuinely care about security, and that they are the best at countering anti-privacy on the technology front.

  If any team can use AI responsibly to improve all this, it’s the GOS team. And if it ends up failing on it’s face, I expect them to move away from it if things go south. Now, if they don’t because of ‘AI addiction’, then I will be looking at what my alternative options are. Until them, I’m 100% with them, as they have not given me any reason yet to doubt their judgement.

If we’re going to look for the “least bad AI company”, I’d have to go with Google (itself a self-contained shot show), because between Anthropic and OpenAI, plus the platforms leveraging them, what we have is a guaranteed eventual end of humanity. The worst part is that it won’t be because they achieve a super intelligence that figures humans are the problem and goes all “Terminator” on us, but because this will expedite the destruction of the world economy, natural resources and potentially going haywire and firing all the nukes available.

• Yeah. It’s certainly impressive how we’ve come to suspect specific companies of each shitty move in our lives, and usually be 100% correct in our suspicions.

  Anything that points at fucking up gaming is going to be Sony, Microsoft, EA or Ubisoft (not accounting for some of the smaller companies that are certain to be part of an organized ring of games-destroying “gaming” companies".

  For personal surveillance, while governments, data brokers and hackers are the main beneficiaries, every single tech company is involved at some level, and we can usually point out which ones are part of any specific case fairly easy.

  But what blows my mind the most is that, because there is no real push-back, they feel comfortable not trying to deny any of their predatory and mafia-like practices anymore. Sure, if we make enough noise their PR teams will drop a few social media bullshit posts to calm down the masses, and then just drop the subject entirely hoping it just dies down over time, or in extreme cases, pedal back for a few months, and then just do it anyway, since people will stop caring about it at some point (for example, Reddit).

  And something I’ve been thinking lately is making more and more sense every day, when I see shot like this. What if they are betting on us getting tired of fighting against this and just giving in because of the sheer volume of shitty things every company is doing? It’s such a large volume of tracking, surveillance, control, deception, predatory TOSs, etc, that they know we cannot focus on all of it at once, much less care about a few for a long period of time because 5 more will pop up between the start of lunch and paying the bill.

• The last game I bought was Ghost of Yotei. And as much as I really like most of Sony’s exclusive(?) IPs, they saw my money for the last time on that purchase.

  At this point, and with the ridiculous PC parts prices, I guess I’ll just have to enjoy what I can on my steam deck, on a TV when possible with a wireless controller.

  I’m not tossing my PS5 out the window any time soon, but this is it for Sony in my life. I think I have another 6 months on my yearly PS+ subscription, so, guess I’ll probably play GTA6 a couple of years from now. Oh well, there’s always books, going out and Lemmy.

• That’s a web site design and architecture issue, not a browser issue. Most web sites are made for Chrome (Chromium-based) browsers, and anything based in Gecko is an afterthought, if anything.

  I’d rather just not access a site if Chrome use is mandatory. LibreWolf has been fantastic for me the last 3 years or so. If I really need to access a “Chrome-exclusive” site, I use Brave, and then clear and reset everything in it in case I need it again.

• I ended up using mediawiki instead of kiwix-serve. Left my proxmox grabbing the data and its at around 170,000 pages right now. I’m still going to be versioning to make sure I keep the most up to date data, but still have access to the previous versions, as well as getting new articles, and keeping any removed ones if it happens.

I’ve been planning on doing just that, and have it auto-update every week or so (keeping the previous versions archived, of course) by using kiwix-serve for a static ‘.zim’ file and maybe a cron job for the auto-update. But if you have a better solution, I’d love to know. The deployment I am planning is kind of convoluted to be honest.
