I use proxmox for basically anything in my homelab, but there’s no particular reason. I use it because it does what I need. It supports VMs in case I need a bit more control over what runs in the system (like a Windows VM) and it supports LXCs that fundamentally work like docker with less configuration steps. It provides a nice webUI if I need to check up on some things and an API so I can orchestrate all my systems with terraform.

It does the job and I never saw a reason to switch away from it.

It IS a lost fight. The genie is out of the bottle - even if every AI company dies tomorrow, (an event that I would celebrate) AI isn’t going to go away. We have hundreds of open weight models all over the internet, running it on local hardware or small setups. It’s not going to go away, ever.

You should invest that time and energy into preventing the construction of new data centers and shit like that, because that’s the actual problem. I know that takes more effort than just complaining online about “Muuuh AI”, but that would actually change something.

Using a distro that’s a derivation of arch is perfectly fine. Cachy does all the configuration for you. SteamOS runs on arch aswell and is absolutely targeted towards non-technical people.

Plain arch does nothing of that. You have to install every package yourself. Want a network connection? You need something like NetworkManager for that. Wdym, a desktop? You have to install that. Oh, you don’t want your desktop to start via something like startx in the CLI? Well, you better go take a look at something like lightdm or sddm.

Most non-technical people that have no interest in learning that will not be able to use arch properly.

Not that simple for her, she likes some of the features it offers. For example, using the youtube app on your phone to control videos on the TV. I’ve blocked most unrelated domains tho, including the update domains so I’m not being surprised by a random update that bypasses everything I’ve set up.

Once I got a bit of time, I play on building a pi box that works similarly to what she’s expecting.

Oh I get it, dw. But I often see memes like that used as “excuses” for technically illiterate people who want to be cool and use arch without understanding it. Like, it’s not about gatekeeping, it’s about people using software they are unable to handle and use, not because they’re dumb, but usually because there’s just no interest in learning these things. That’s the whole reason we had this AUR problem a few weeks ago, and that just kinda pissed me off so I’m reacting a bit allergic to these kind of memes.

You don’t have to, no. But you should. Not understanding how a system works that you fundamentally completely set up yourself is setting you up for massive failure. That’s like using unreal engine and only relying on blueprints without understanding C++.

If you want Arch without knowing shit about arch, there’s plenty of distros you can use. Stop trying to be cool. Pick something that fits your use case.

I’m very glad that my “unsubstantiated fearmongering” regarding smart TVs doesn’t look that unsubstantiated anymore. I’ve Bad my girldfriends Samsung smartTV Lockes down once she moved in with that thing and I saw what kind of connections that thing made.

Because people like us in the tactics genre really are used to incredibly buggy and laggy games. XCOM, anything made by paradox - all of that suffers from performance issues and gameplay bugs. It’s a bit like buying something from bethesda - you just expect those kinds of problems, which is why it doesn’t really influence our rating.

Replace “wasn’t” with “is” and you’re correct. I still love XCOM 2, play it to this day. But it’s a buggy mess and sometimes it feels it’s just held together with software-ducttape and positive thoughts lmao.

For real tho, it is, but it doesn’t include any google services, which is why any apps requiring them won’t work on graphene unless you make use of their compatibility layer, which is still significantly less of a privacy problem than the original one.

Unless linux phones become useable, android without google services is the most privacy respecting option you have available.

Arch was the “elite” distro. Most people who weren’t already very comfortable with the terminal were even able to use arch properly. Stuff like archinstall didn’t exist back then and those that did were way inferior than what we have today. So using arch was like a “badge of honor” of sorts for many people who thought using it made them superior to disgusting ubuntu or mint users with their GUI installer.

It’s just classic gatekeeping that you’ll see in basically everything that comes with a passionate community.

Where are those people whose arch installs break after every second update? I don’t think I had a single problem with arch that I wasn’t responsible for. Hell, I had more problems with mint on my girlfriends PC than the arch machines that I’m running.

I don’t mean this in any mean way, but if you don’t know what you should be looking for, you probably shouldn’t install AUR packages. Just as I wouldn’t recommend someone who has never climbed a mountain to try mt everest.

You need to be able to understand the build process before you install anything from the AUR. Everything else is the equivalent of installing random exe’s you found on a forum on windows.

Luckily, there’s a lot of different videos online regarding the AUR build process, and the archwiki has an excellent article aswell.

Honestly, since I switched to vim and got through the first month of “why the fuck am I doing this to myself”, I just can’t go back. Especially once you get to customizing it, installing plugins, themes etc … it’s better than any IDE out there.
