German police read WhatsApp messages without cracking encryption
45 days of Signal history may be exposed by German police messaging surveillance using linked devices, Netzpolitik says. Read what the documents reveal
Netzpoltik details that police are able to gain access in this way either through physical access to someone’s phone or by intercepting verification codes via a state-sanctioned phishing attack or intercepting SMS messages via telephone surveillance
That title, while true, makes it sound worse than it actually is, especially for Signal. As noted, by others, your message history doesn’t sync. Also, the desktop software isn’t that great.
As much as I hate American products, there really is a constant smear campaign going on against Signal. Of course it would be better if they moved Jurisdiction and tried to move towards a decentralized system but at least it has robust encryption and a great track record.
