Some Samsung smart fridges stopped working on Tuesday due to a firmware update.

Korean outlets were the first to report the problems, which affect Samsung’s Bespoke AI line of fridges. Star News Korea, per a Google-provided translation, said that most of the affected devices were four-door fridges from 2024 or later.

The platform says hackers targeted a firm that helped to verify the ages of its users.

tl;dr: Proxmox or bare metal? Containers yes/no? What is your use case?

I used a Dell R710 when I first started self-hosting, it ran ESXi with one VM for each service I wanted. Restarting the server required me to first shutdown each VM in order and then the whole host. When setting up a new service to host I had to create a new VM (allocate RAM, disk etc), install the OS (I ran Debian) and then follow instructions for how to setup the service. This mostly was not a problem but one software I never managed to get working was Apache Guacamole.

Nowadays I have a Dell Optiplex I salvaged for parts, got a new case and all my HDDs from my R710. Because it has much less RAM and an old Intel i5 (6th or 7th generation), I decided to get into Docker. With Docker containers you write your compose file and it will just work. No more need to dig through documentation for which version of a dependency to use, how to handle if two services on the same host need different versions (this was part of the reason for one VM/service). With Docker, I can try out a software in seconds and have it configured to my liking in minutes.

Today I have NixOS (bare metal) and it comes with Podman which uses systemd. Hence restarting my OS (albeit not that often, almost never unless I mess up my config) is a no-brainer because Podman via systemd will manage everything. Adding, stopping or removing containers in general is easy. I have a script running as a service which will stop a container, create a BTRFS subvolume snapshot, start the service again and start borg backup to backup from the snapshot.

For me using Proxmox would just an extra layer of complexity I don’t need. I only have one server and I am the only user.

Questions:

• Do you use Proxmox instead of a bare metal installation?
• Do you use containers or do you install manually?
• What is you use case that requires your setup the way it is?

Microsoft has filed for a new patent that describes a credit system to “rent” software and games, including rate-limited rentals based on the type of use. In their examples, singleplayer costs more than training mode, but multiplayer costs more credits than both. Users can ‘earn’ credits by subjecting themselves to more advertisements during loading screens, round win or loss screens, and level loading screens. The patent technology can be applied at the application level, OS level, and device level, making it wide-reaching and affecting more than just Windows machines. In one instance, Microsoft explicitly names Smart TVs. This would be similar, in some ways, to ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) on LG or other Smart TVs, where the patent-pending technology could scan the screen and audio.

A high profile hacking group claims it has breached multiple FBI-related services and stolen data “on all FBI employees and applicants.” A representative of the group, called ShinyHunters, told 404 Media the data includes FBI agents’ names, home addresses, phone number, and information on their spouse.

The data breach could be massively significant and may have all sorts of national security and counterintelligence implications. Criminals from the same ecosystem as ShinyHunters have previously used hacked data like phone records to track, intimidate, and harass the FBI agents investigating them. The highly sensitive data could also be a boon to foreign intelligence agencies who want to better understand how one of the most important law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.S. operates. And if the data fell into the hands of more criminals, FBI agents and their spouses could face serious threats to their safety.

“We hacked the FBI. We hold data on all FBI employees and applicants,” the representative of the group told 404 Media.

The representative provided 404 Media with a sample appearing to contain the personal data of 5,000 FBI employees. That data included an alleged address, phone number, date of birth, and in some cases details on their spouse.

Today’s game is Fallout 3. My network has been out all evening. So i chose to take this as an opportunity to play some Fallout 3.

First thing I did was I made my way back to the metro I got my ass kicked in last time before crashing. I got my ass kicked again though so I went back and did some questing to get better gear. Then I came back and cleared the floor.

The main quest I did was the survivor’s guide. It sent me to the grocery store, and I killed all the raiders and stole some of their brass knuckles too. Or. I killed all but one. One of them got afraid and ran away, and I felt bad gunning down (or punching down) a surrendering enemy.

After that I went through the metro like I said above. That brought me in contact with the Lyon’s Brotherhood of Steel. I helped them clear out the super mutants with my fancy new brass knuckles. The behemoth came along though and I knew that wasn’t going to cut it so I dropped some land mines and lured it over them.

I experienced another crash though as I was making my way through the rest of the story. The last thing I got to look at was this ghoul’s eyeball. I decided that was a fitting place to stop.

I’m enjoying this a lot. It feels a lot more balanced compared to New Vegas in terms of leveling and such. New Vegas I do love the difficulty though. I suppose it’s two different things.

Anyways, I’m gonna sink some more time into this tomorrow. I want to see how it compares to what I remember it being like when I was younger.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has revealed an AI agent hacked into an Australian Medicare data portal earlier this year.

Speaking in New York, Mr Albanese said the Open AI agent gained unauthorised access to the Medicare statistics reporting service portal administered by Services Australia.

The AI agent accessed both public and non-public files.

The agent was conducting research into public medical spending when it found a way to break through privacy protections.

Mr Albanese said it took three months for OpenAI to admit the breach, which he said was unacceptable.

“Today I spoke with the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, to express Australia’s extreme concern about this incident,” he said. 

"And I also expressed my disappointment that it took the company way too long to inform the government what had occurred.

“The nature of the way that the notification occurred as well was unacceptable.”

He said there was no evidence any individual personal information had been accessed, but an investigation aided by the Australian Signals Directorate was now underway.
