The Document Foundation (TDF) recently announced the release of LibreOffice 26.8, and while it packs many new features, its highlight is the lack of any AI integration. This is quite the opposite of what Microsoft has been doing with its Office suite, but the tale of the disagreements between these two entities is as old as time itself, so nothing surprising. Now, TDF has explained why it cannot display some fancy charts that Microsoft Office can visualize without a problem.

Altogether, what we found was that the “live” change feed is gone, past decisions were retroactively reverted without explanation, new decisions are not being issued, and article text appears frozen (and, in some cases, outdated). We do not know whether xAI is preparing a major revision or has altogether abandoned active development of the project.

It’s not my work, I don’t want to (and don’t have much of a right to) meddle with it. If I even thought of updating it to my tastes, I’d do everything differently, far from changing just one word. Art can’t be updated.

The interesting part is, to me, how a few details do seem not at all outdated, despite many others being grating.

I must admit, now I understand even more clearly why the author deleted all of her work off the internet…

The comic was pretty popular back in the day, the minimal empty style had its charm, and worked well with the themes.

I suspect the comic’s notion of “nerd” is just outdated. Or off the mark. Either way, the actual criticisms don’t apply to what we call nerds, but to something else, others have pointed out the better word would be tech bros.

I do find the reactions interesting, including the negative. The comics by this author were pretty popular, running from 2007 to 2014, but today they do strike an odd note in some regards (as I already anticipated in my description; perhaps that’s why the author nuked her site). Techbro wasn’t a term at the time yet, so ‘nerd’ it was. And I do have the impression nerdiness was more consumerist at the time…

No, quite the contrary.

Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter… have paid moderators. That’s a small number of massive social media sites. Forums, including their descendants in the form of reddit and Lemmy, and IRC chatrooms with their descendants in Discord and Telegram channels, are primarily user-moderated (with paid admins intervening in more complex situations when needed). Even Facebook offers groups that function like this. Number-wise the latter sites are way more numerous (but with a smaller userbase), and historically older (if it’s not too pretentious to speak of the history of the internet). They are the default. So my point is that reddit didn’t offload the work, because nobody (especially in the early years) thought that it was reddit’s work in the first place, it’s just providing a large playground and you do the rest.

The traumatising part of moderation is dealing with child porn and similar, which is not much of an issue on traditional forums and chatrooms, and tbh I don’t think it is on reddit either. The worst the traditional mods deal with is harassment if they come across some aggressive loony.

Idk, I used to moderate two (rather tame) subforums, it was kind of like picking up trash from the ground and throwing it in the bin – not super pleasant by itself, but satisfaction came from knowing that the place is a bit better off than before.

Moderation of pretty much all traditional forums is done by volunteers, a practice that naturally extended to reddit and Lemmy. Perhaps it’s even more logical in the reddit format, since it’s the users who create and take responsibility for their subreddit, rather than having a centralised “government” deciding how to organise and moderate the place.

Wikipedia’s content is also 99% volunteer-made and volunteer-moderated.

So, it has to be admitted that there’s no strong, direct evidence for it. The main argument in that thread is that he’s supposed to have some scarring, but none of the other photos from the time period show them either, so the guy just concludes they all must’ve been edited.

And yes, the look is somewhat different from the other photos, mainly the eyes, more widely open than on the other pics. But people can hold different facial expressions…

True, but that would be resolved by checking the output, picking the one result that works reliably, and sticking with it.

So for clock software this should be good enough (ok, not really, since the clock should know the location of the user and adapt according to the timezone and daylight saving switches, etc., I doubt AI can nail that down as easily).

On the other hand, there’s been many stories of frustrated AI users who complained that changes to the models broke their workflow. I haven’t heard such stories in a while, however, perhaps they’re kept more stable these days?

Even frontier models are not yet strong AI

I believe that would require a whole new paradigm of how AI works, the sort of shift that won’t be achieved by mere refinement of the current models. So I’m not expecting surprises on that front right now. On the contrary, what has surprised me the last time I tried to use ChatGPT is that it produced ungrammatical sentences with incomplete words. That’s a sort of “chickenpox” issue that should’ve been fixed long ago by now…

Thanks. I can’t help but conclude that the public outcry is exaggerated – the books being bought are evidently selected at random. The chances of the companies buying some particularly rare (and more expensive) book this way seem slim, since they probably don’t want to waste too much money.

I just checked myself, searching for “aptoide” results in a notification before the actual results that directs to the “third-party app store page” where I can download Aptoide Games (idk if that one’s legit either, admittedly, but clearly they’re developing a special system for this).
