• To be fair, when I was in primary school, we were assured that the “digital revolution” (or whatever hype phrase was popular) would halve working hours, etc. What it didn’t consider is that bosses would simply demand more productivity.

  I mean at all. It didn’t cross their minds that we’d be expected to be twice as productive now that everything was twice as quick. (And so on). 🤯

  As history has shown, repeatedly, the only time a worker wins is when they unionise, protest and fight for improvements. You get nothing for free in the mediaeval, feudal system of the workplace.

  Webrings were a thing that evolved alongside things like Altavista, before Google became dominant. They’re still a great option, given the current circumstances and low barrier to entry, though.

• On the one hand, you’re absolutely right. When smoking was common/accepted, it appeared everywhere in TV and films. Then it became a niche thing, but was always incidental rather than core to the plot. Which I think is the point here.

  Perhaps many of us lived in a place where it’s been so long without “smoking is normal” that it’s now jarring, but you don’t have to travel far to see that’s definitely not the case everywhere. Australia’s west versus east coasts, UK versus France or Italy, etc.

  Seeing the recent smoking- and drinking-centric anime/manga (for me it’s Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You and Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk) is interesting, and makes me think of how easy it’s been to go from smoking and drinking being ubiquitous to fringe where I live.

  The only thing I’ve used Portainer for in the last few years is to easily tidy up my old images.

• This week was almost entirely about the manager and Obata, which was surprising but sensible from a storytelling perspective to give more options for development and storylines.

  Discounting the smoking thing (I avoided it for the longest time solely because I find smoking disgusting), it’s an uplifting and excellent slow burn cross-generational slice of life romance, IMHO. I get how it might put some off, but I’m surprised by how much I love it.

• The Saga of Tanya the Evil does a surprisingly good job of it, considering it’s an isekai about flying mages.

  Much of it is not-Germany fighting not-Russia while not-Italy are acting as neutral peace facilitators while not-UK are harrying the western flank, and they’re worried about the not-US getting involved and screwing up the balance of power. Lots of politics and strategy mixed in with some good action.
