• Smart home stuff is dominated by Tuya, which is Chinese. Even a lot of the american branded stuff is Tuya rebranded. Phillips hue is Netherlands based, and from a quick look isn’t tuya. IKEA is also not tuya. The rest, I would basically guarantee are all tuya based.

• User process makes sense, but login shell is probably limited value. If your service gets pwn’d the attacker will spin up a reverse shell, and that isn’t protected by the login shell. You ideally want to use selinux/apparmor to prevent execution, or containers to limit the available execution environment.

• There are nicer ways to say that.

  The hosted nextcloud solutions are not cheap. The base plan for librebit is 79EUR per month. After 3 months you’ve paid off a mini PC.

  Yes, its more work, and a huge learning curve, but if the goal is to save money, paying 79EUR per month is insane, unless you need the SLA.

  I agree that self hosting may not be the right path for OP, but there are valid tangible reasons to do it beyond “self hosting is fun”.

• You only need your PC on when others are using the spreadsheet.

  Keep an eye out for mini PCs on second hand market places, they can be found for a couple hundred dollars or less, and are perfect for running something like this 24/7. Youll want a fairly decent internet connection though.

  You can get free VMs on oracle cloud. Yes, Oracle are a bunch of cunts, but free is free, and you can get a free ARM VM with plenty of RAM that should be adequate for nextcloud.

  Make sure you setup https properly.

• The new cameras are not announced, not spec’d, and not dated. There is no model name, no sensor, no price. What the company is describing is a direction, not a product you can buy.

  That was what triggered me.

• Noscript has 100k users on chrome, 240k on Firefox, according to their respective stores. I don’t know if thats total downloads or active installations though.

  Ublock origin lite is 19M on chrome.

  There are ~6B global internet users. So definitely more than 1:100k, but still very unique.

  So they are very different scales.

• Adblock, incognito tabs, VPN. Probably other good alternatives as well.

  If they can’t sell you ads, fingerprinting you doesnt gain them much.

  And if you can reset/perturb your fingerprint enough via incognito/vpn, they can’t track you for dynamic pricing shenanigans.

• I’ve had the same though re. shipping addresses, but I don’t think it scales well. You’d need every postie to have an online device that allows them to link QR code/uuid code to the real address, and delivery just gets a lot harder.

  In Australia, AusPost allows you to generate a “virtual” PO box, which is a lot easier to deal with, but you have to go to the post office to pickup.

• KYC is not just for funsies, they are legal requirements for a lot of businesses. If they don’t legally have to store information, they can just choose not to. It doesnt require a framework, Lemmy manages just fine without storing personal data.

  Found from a google, no experience with it.

  Tape is not a nice medium for the self-hoster, the drives are expensive, the tapes need to be carefully stored securely (temperature and humidity controled). Its a lot of hassle. That said, if you find something good, I’m interested as well, so report back.

• I believe, and I could be very wrong, that it kills the largest memory process. The problem is that it may not be the problematic process. You could have a well behaved DB that is using a stable 80%, and a runaway process that rapidly fills the remaining 20%, and OOM will kill the DB, and let the out of control process keep consuming memory until it becomes the largest. Then your DB is down and you don’t known why.

  I like the idea of just killing processes at random though. Determinism is overrated.

• I’ve not experienced the stream ending, but there disconnect is definitely an issue. Might be app specific?

  When I tested Chromecast with google TV (5 years ago to be fair, it might be fixed now), if I casted from my phone, I then had to use the remote to choose my Netflix account and choose the show again from scratch. So it was two steps on two devices, for no good reason. It also didn’t connect to WiFi properly and didnt have Ethernet, so that killed its functionality as well.

• There were definitely some shitty Chromecast apps. ABC in Aus had a terrible one. There are also some pretty shitty TV apps as well :/

  Ultra was good for connectivity, as it has an Ethernet port. Relying on wifi on a streaming stick behind a TV was tough. My TV behaves as a signal blocking wall, anything WiFi behind it is a dead zone.

  I also haven’t tried the new Chromecast with google TV in a few years, but it was so terrible I returned it immediately and started scouring eBay for another Ultra. I am very sad Google killed the plain Chromecast line.

• Chromecast doesnt use your phone for decoding. It just tells the stick to play the video, and it plays it directly. It shouldn’t drain your phone at all.

  The remote is a personal preference, but I was happy for the phone to be the remote. Having a second remote didnt gain me anything.

• Streaming sticks shouldn’t have apps. The Chromecast Ultra is the last good streaming stick. Just cast, and it plays. End of story.
