I still maintain that everyone should have to do one year of retail work, kind of like national service. People who have worked retail are almost always nice to other retail workers because they know the kind of shit they have to deal with every day.

It also drives me nuts as a non-American that random states in America can pass laws that I then have to deal with.
I mean I already use Linux but I’m sure I’m going to bump into this somewhere eventually. I think this might be the final straw though, I pretty much don’t use any social media as it is, this might be the thing that just makes me detach from the internet altogether, or as much as humanly possible at least.

I switched from Mullvad to IVPN after the Mullvad troubles. IVPN seems good to so far, does everything I need and hasn’t been proven untrustworthy/politically dodgy yet.

As a heads up for everyone recommending Immich: for the last little while, it’s been owned by FUTO, a company that has apparently ties to both Peter Thiel and Curtis Yarvin.
FUTO’s association with controversial political figures, particularly Curtis Yarvin, has become a flashpoint in the discussion. Yarvin’s self-described fascist views and his platforming on FUTO channels have led many in the community to question the organization’s values and intentions.
No shade if anyone wants to use it anyway, but just mentioning it as it may be a privacy concern/could potentially become one in the future.

I heard someone say the other day that most of the time when there’s a ‘bad’ technology it starts off as something good that everyone likes, and gradually becomes bad over time, like social media. But AI is something a bit more rare in that it came out and the majority of people didn’t especially want or like it, but it really feels like it’s being ‘forced’ into existence, so to speak. Which makes me think there’s something else going on.

I use Filen, I don’t know if they still do it but you used to be able to buy a lifetime plan for a one-time fee that was like 50-100GB or something like that, and you could stack them. So I just bought several during a Black Friday sale.

It’s got the kernel of something amazing in there, but it’s insanely buggy (and essentially unplayable when it’s busy, like the Free Fly events or right after a patch) and the pace of development is absolutely glacial. And you really can’t trust anything the devs assure you is happening/on the way. It’s unclear whether they’re just bullshitting everyone or they somehow genuinely believe their own hype about deadlines, even after consistently missing all of them for over a decade, by a lot.
That probably makes it sound worse than it is TBH. There’s a really cool game in there somewhere, but you have to be extremely patient with it.

Yeah. Not be all “told-you-so” but I saw people on reddit talking about how Rockstar have screwed themselves by not doing physical disks and how pricing it so high is going to ruin them and I was thinking “Oh shut up, you’re all going to buy it.” I guarantee when it does eventually release all you’ll see on reddit for weeks is people talking about how awesome it is.

I bailed on YouTube a few years ago. I had a video with a very clearly public domain piece of music (both the song and the performance) in it, which I didn’t monetize just because I hate ads and the channel wasn’t very popular anyway. Some bot flagged the public domain song for copyright and YouTube not only gave me a copyright strike but also added paid ads into my video without my consent so they could send the ad money to whoever it was that flagged it.
I didn’t even bother to contest that one, I just deleted my entire channel and sent them a very angry message telling them to go fuck themselves lol.
I will never use them again because of that, and I’m so glad I got out before AI became a thing. Fuck YouTube.

Yeah I switched over to Tidal and I like it so far. The music quality is good and there’s just a simple toggle in settings to turn off anything to do with AI.
The recommendations aren’t as good as Spotify’s but I’d rather deal with that than a barrage of AI bullshit.
That’s what I assume - like if your studio is going under anyway and MS is the only one to make an offer, you might be able to keep the place running for another year of so, give everyone a buffer and maybe finish whatever you were working on. I would figure it’s not a long-term strategy though, more just slowing the collapse.
