• It really isn’t as political as people think, Israel situation not withstanding) As someone who is forced to watch the thing every year and listen to all the songs for months beforehand (when the other half is in charge of the music) we just keep sending shit acts.

  It comes down to: good song, performed well by someone who actually puts effort into promoting it across Europe.

  Sam Ryder simply had a brilliant song and he’s an incredible performer and he spent months and months appearing on TV and radio in places like Moldova and Poland and Belgium.

  All our other acts either have a song that would never do well (look mum no computer), they perform it badly and they don’t put the work in.

  Mostly the issue we have is any legitimate artist in the UK views it (somewhat rightly) as a terrible thing for their credibility so they don’t want to do it. You’re then left with unknowns, has beens and niche artists and the only hope is you somehow strike lightning in a bottle which is incredibly rare.

• Yeah, I’ve read The Corner though not seen the series in full. Highly recommend the book and also Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and you see so much of what ends up becoming The Wire in both.

  If someone can for fun complete a maths degree at 73, pretty sure it’s not too late for whatever you want to do.

  She, the extremely qualified, professional architect who works restoring ancient buildings and who’s name is on the structural plans and diagrams as the engineer picked the first people who could identify that her husband couldn’t tell a hammer from a screwdriver.
