• Yes, the Comission is a problem, but sadly, it’s not the only problem.

  The European Council is just as big of an issue. It’s mostly made up of member states’ heads of state/government, so technically it’s democratically elected, except the Comission’s president who also gets a seat there, for whatever reason.

  However, members of the Council almost always push for their countries’ best interests, instead of the EU’s as a whole. And they’re an even bigger issue when they happen to be anti-EU, like about half of the current Council.

  Which essentially means the only EU body that is fully democratically elected, and elected on an EU level is the Parliament. Which coincidentally has the least influence, and which isn’t free of its own issues either.

  The Parliament’s current president - Roberta Metsola - appears to be friends with some American billionaires, and her husband is the head of an American lobby.

  Does that sound like a conflict of interests? Well, that’s probably because it is. Usually, all MEPs are legally required to disclose such conflicts of interests, but for some reason she never had to.

  In case you may be interested, she’s also anti-abortion, part of Malta’s nationalist party, and one of the main pushing forces behind Chat Control.

• When a citizen’s initiative presents a serious issue, gets a record number of signatures, and provides some good, easy to implement solutions - the European Comission says it’ll do nothing, because it wants to focus on deregulation.

  The same Comission is perfectly fine with implementing new, insanely vague and/or complicated laws that benefit literally nobody other than big tech companies, at the expense of everyone else.

  And then the same Comission wonders why anti-EU sentiment is growing.

  We’re slowly but steadily getting to a point where the EU has all the dystopian surveillance and control measures in place as China does, except without any of the benefits that come with them.

• I’d say this is by far the biggest issue with EVs. Well, not necessarily with EVs, but with new cars in general, most of which happen to be EVs, and their share will only continue growing.

  Sure, it’s a nice car, somewhat better for the environment, pretty cool. But it’s also a giant surveillance device that gathers more information on you than your smartphone, smart tv, and computer combined.

  And it has a kill switch, too. If the government being able to remotely shut down your car wasn’t bad enough - this research shows that virtually any hacker may be able to do so as well.

• All Western car makers are already shitting themselves because of Chinese cars. Have been for at least a few years now.

  Even Ford’s CEO openly said that Chinese EVs are better, more technologically advanced, and cheaper than Western cars. He also said that after driving a Xiaomi car for 6 months he doesn’t want to go back to Western cars.

  Again, this is the CEO of Ford.

• His Windows being unlicensed makes perfect sense. Why would he give money to Microsoft? In fact, why would you?

  As for the PC - there are no Russian PCs, so he has to use something foreign. DELLs are very solid, and great for the price if you get them refurbished.

  Not as solid as Lenovo, which also has considerably fewer American companies in its supply chain. But maybe they just got a good deal on a bunch of DELLs.

• Personally I can’t wait for Switch 2 CFW. And ideally a Switch 2 Lite/OLED/just V2, because Jesus Christ the battery life in current Switch 2 is abysmal.

  The Switch 1 is already a very cool console once you mod it. Now imagine what it could do with more modern hardware, and not that 10+ years old discount chip from nvidia that they dug up somewhere in Iraq.

  Might still be a while, but I’m in no rush. Still plenty of games to play on Switch 1, and even more older games, most of which can be emulated on a Switch as well.

• What does that even mean? I don’t think anyone is proposing mandatory, internet-wide age verification.

  Right now, the proposed age verification law would be very much mandatory, i.e., companies would be legally required to implement age verification or face fines/other penalties.

  I can’t speak for the initiative’s organizers, but to me ‘voluntary’ means companies would be free to choose whether or not to implement age verification for their services.

  So it comes down to some alternative implementation of ageverification.dev? It’s an open standard.

  The current problem is it relies completely on Google and Apple device attestation, which means it’ll be unavailable on rooted, uncertified by Google, and/or not running Google services devices. One of the developers confirmed on Github that this is the intended implementation and will most likely not be changed (and got down voted into oblivion).

  These initiatives aren’t meant to provide any clear and direct solutions to any problems. Their goal is to let the EU know that there are issues Europeans are worried about, and then the Comission, Council, and Parliament will talk about any available solutions, if they deem it appropriate. Which they are absolutely not required to, unfortunately.

• Yes, I did make a Mistral account. Forgot to mention that I tested all of the mentioned chatbots on free plans, except Copilot, which I had the highest tier plan for, as part of my job. Needless to say, even on the highest tier Copilot performed the worst. Congratulations, Microsoft.

  I do appreciate Mistral being European and maintaining better values than American competition. That’s why I feel bad rating it so low. Although as you said, many tasks that LLMs are useful for don’t require the cutting edge at all.

  In fact, Mistral Vibe (I preferred the name Le Chat, but oh well) is probably more than enough for most people. It’s just that availability of much better models makes it look worse than it is.

  There’s also the question of system prompts. ChatGPT has been known to work considerably better with a good prompt setup, to the point where it’s not one of the worst chatbots anymore. I was only testing the defaults. It’s entirely possible that setting the right system prompt for Mistral improves it noticeably.

  At the end of the day, however, if I can run a small, open-weight model locally with comparable results - using a huge, cloud-based and closed model makes no sense to me. I’m not connecting to any cloud unless I really need to.

  Alibaba is releasing Qwen 3.8 27B in a little over 3 hours from now, so I’ll have to try that too. Though I’ll probably wait for fine-tuned community releases to make a more detailed comparison.

• True, it’s always important to be careful with chatbots, even when used for simple tasks.

  From my experience, they work fairly well when asked to explain code or error logs. For reference, I mainly tested Gemini and Deepseek. Apparently Claude is the best for coding, but I haven’t really tried it yet.

  Personally I’d avoid both Mistral and Copilot. I used to work on Copilot, so unfortunately had a lot of exposure to it. Tried Mistral for a while too.

  These two are the worst LLMs I’ve used so far. Honestly probably worse than local Qwen with 27-35B parameters. I feel a little bad hating on a European company, but unfortunately it’s way behind competition. At least from my testing.

  E.g., someone who previously committed sexual assault should probably not work on a project that is a manga series featuring scenes of similar nature.

  I have no idea how they’d evaluate the first part, but I can appreciate the sentiment.

• If you really want to contribute to some projects, the first step would be to take a course in that project’s programming language. There are many decent free courses on YouTube, and even more fantastic courses for very cheap on websites like Udemy or Skillshare.

  Next, you’d probably want to keep learning the language (e.g., by solving LeetCode challenges), read more about programming and software development in general, as well as check out another course or a tutorial about the specific frameworks/libraries or even just paradigms that the project works with.

  A good starting point is FreeCodeCamp on YouTube. Courses there are excellent for the proce of 0€. If you have difficulties with anything - you can always ask a chatbot. If you opt for courses on something like Udemy - you can always just ask the instructor and they’ll usually respond within 2 hours, timezone permitting.

  You did mention ‘political compass’ in the description, but I’m guessing many people and I interpreted it a little differently, since the chart itself focuses on corpo vs non-corpo.

  About LineageOS (and by extension Waydroid too) - maybe you could open issues about the connections to Google and point to the specific ones. Perhaps the devs would be entirely willing to change which servers LineageOS connects to by default. And if not, then maybe they’d explain why or how.

  When attempting to click the link to see for myself, I still find that the artix forums are inaccessible, and so I can’t see for myself.

  I was able to access the forum without any issues. Tl;dr - it looks like an off-topic discussion turned political; many mentions of neonazism, Marx, Lenin, and western propaganda. Then someone started throwing shit at an Alpine Linux dev, who happens to be trans. At first they didn’t clearly state the ‘issue’, but I’ve been in many transphobic groups in the past, and I can tell you that’s exactly what they meant. Later someone else said they were eating and upon seeing the dev’s picture feel like vomiting. This is where I stopped reading, but the thread goes on for several more pages.

  That’s basically what it boils down to. The entire thread gives strong far-right and transphobic vibes, although not everyone participating demonstrated such views.

  It should be noted that I have no idea who the people posting are. Some of their comments suggest they’re Artix Linux devs, but I can’t verify that right now. Maybe when I’m on a bigger screen later.

• This might be the best looking and most comprehensive tier list of anything I’ve ever seen.

  Although I have some concerns, mainly with the 3 bottom tiers, it’s still more reasonable than most tier lists I’ve seen.

  As for my concerns, perhaps someone will be able to answer some questions:

  • Why are Artix Linux and Waydroid ‘dubious’? Especially Waydroid, as it’s not an operating system. The other two I’m unfamiliar with, or at least the logos.
  • Why is LineageOS ‘borderline’? I’m not aware of anything dangerous about it. It’s not far from Graphene, just for a lot more devices.
  • I’m not sure Android belongs in the bottom tier. Or at least not yet. As of right now, you can still use it as an open OS, and it’s great for devices such as handheld gaming consoles. I’ve also never seen age verification in Android yet.

• Personally I feel like that reddit post is terrible and nothing but PR. They did not ‘refute a lot of accusations’, as you claim. They cherry picked a grand total of two, one of which got twisted, and responded with largely irrelevant and misleading info.

  Which is pretty much what The Hated One responded to them. Not to mention even the response to the two (out of what, 12?) points was full of holes and manipulative statements.

  Naturally, no further comments were made by anyone from Kurzgesagt’s team. Just like corporate PR. Publish a meaningless statement that provides no new information whatsoever -> pretend it answers everything -> refuse to elaborate -> act like people are evil for asking questions.

• A perfect example is Veritasium’s now deleted video about self driving cars. Entirely sponsored by Waymo, featuring exlusively data provided by Waymo (which coincidentally contradicted all other available data), and the guy acts like the video being fully sponsored means nothing.

  Once people called him out, he started acting like a victim targeted by everyone for no reason. Just read his comments under videos on the topic. It’s just pathetic.

  Many other channels, like Kurzgesagt, completely source their data from billionaire-sponsored websites like OurWorldInData. Sometimes the data matches other, more reliable and trustworthy sources, and other times it’s just plain made up.

  In addition to portraying various subjects from only one perspective, which, suspiciously, always seems to be the one that makes billionaires look better.

• Youtube’s system sucks, but I don’t feel bad for many of these channels. They used to be great. You could learn a lot while eating, or just entertain yourself without brainrot.

  For a few years now, however, increasing numbers of their videos have been sponsored by billionaires (or their chains of companies or foundations), either in part or in full. Some extreme cases are just plain propaganda.
