• CrowdSec isn’t really for protection against novel threats. It’s just a crowdsourced Fail2Ban that’s extensible with custom rules.

  If you and I are both using CrowdSec, and some foreign machine is trying to brute force into one of my services, then when it tries to do the same to you it doesn’t even get the chance to try. It cuts down on the load.

  You can also define your own scenarios. Most of the rules it ships with block IPs using a leaky bucket method but I have a custom rule that instantly blocks anyone trying to log into anything using usernames like admin, root, pgadmin, etc.

• This comments reeks of never had to struggle in life lol. I’m going to choose to believe you’re just young and fortunate. If you quit your job you don’t get unemployment usually. This is America, public assistance is sparse to be generous, and to qualify for it you have to be actively looking for a job, including those Amazon Warehouse positions. Despite what the American right would have you believe, you can’t just choose not to work and then live fat dumb and happy on the taxpayers dime.

  And no, the average person previously working at an Amazon warehouse doesn’t have a huge support system. If they did, they probably wouldn’t have been working at an Amazon warehouse while that pregnant to begin with. And to burden what support network you do have with voluntary unemployment is… kinda nuts.

Because in this case Pandora’s box is something which exists solely through a sustained, inconceivable amount of money being continuously funneled into it without any guaranteed long term benefit to the people who do so. It’s a technology which isn’t sold as a product as it exists in its current form, but a theoretical future form.

  If the bottom were to fall out from under it tomorrow, it couldn’t even continue to exist as it is now, it would disappear entirely as there would be no financial incentive to keep it running. Individuals could still run what we have now offline, but its value and usefulness would degrade rapidly as time went on, because it relies on mass-scale power consumption and data theft to remain up to date, much less improve.

• Yes. But Proton has the advantage of working with well documented APIs on both sides. All the PS5 stuff is proprietary and has to be reverse engineered, that’s why it doesn’t work so well.

• My reply to your comment would be the same one you replied to. That’s not how it works. The translation layer is required. Having the same clue architecture is not good enough to just run the games natively. If it were, Proton wouldn’t exist and Linux and Mac gaming would have been solved a decade ago.

  You already don’t need to emulate the entire hardware system like you would with a PS3, but you still require a complex translation layer.

• You’re thinking of spatial aliasing, which can be improved by sitting further away from the screen. The problem here is temporal aliasing, which has more to do with the resolution and size of the display, and is not improved by sitting further away.

  Temporal aliasing gets worse the larger individual pixels are and the lower the pixel density is, which is why it will more negatively affect the TV viewer even if they appropriately match TV size and distance.

  And then you also have to consider the fact that they don’t make 1080p or 1440p for that matter TVs at the size you’d need to view from the average livingroom distance. So playing a game at 1080P means your TV has to scale that 1080p across its native resolution which will result in a blurry picture.

• If you were watching a movie you might be right, but that won’t compensate enough for how low that pixel density is on that size of a TV on a video game. The subpixel aliasing will be notably worse on the TV.

• That’s not true at all. 1080p on an appropriately large tv at a proper viewing distance will be far worse as those pixels are stretched out. The subpixel aliasing on that would be absolutely brutal.

• 4k is only ridiculous if you play games seated at a desk. Videogames are still ultimately a livingroom toy at their heart, and there are people who’ve graduated from game consoles to PCs and still want to play on the couch. That means distance from your TV, which means the TV has to be pretty large. Lower resolutions on a TV that size do not look good.

• I’m speaking only of things it has already come to. Even in our current admittedly low point, the things currently going on in some European countries would be considered a failed state scenario in the U.S. we can’t be Europe’s lead to follow because we haven’t yet fallen as far as some European countries have.

  A country where you can be arrested by the government for a mere opinion cannot in any sense of the word be considered a civilized country, I’m sorry to say.

  Standards of living, life expectancy, consumer protections, the list goes on - all of these are way way worse in the US vs Europe.

  Patently false. The U.N.’s Human Development Index, which is the defacto standard measurement of global standards of living, ranks the United States above 70% of European Nations.

  I get that the unearned Euro-centric world superiority complex is implanted at birth and all, but even if you live in one of the minority of European countries that actually do consistently rank above the US in standards of living and personal and economic freedoms, don’t let your obsession with the U.S. blind you to the dire state of your neighboring countries on your side of the pond.

  The rise of the AfD in Germany.

  The push for chat control in the EU, turning several countries into complete surveillance states.

  Americans will ultimately sink or swim on their own. Your thoughts and prayers are better utilized on European countries that have thrown themselves to the mercy of their governments.

• Oh no there are plenty of other examples involving federal agencies, but they’re far more rare. A big part of how the second amendment helps is that it prevents the government from even trying. It’s much harder to quietly disappear people in the middle of the night with secret police when the attempt would cause a loud and deadly shootout that would rile up the rest of the rabble nationwide. You’ll have noticed how even our currently blatantly corrupt government had to save face and fire top officials after just two people died in open confrontation with police. Dozens of armed standoffs nationwide would not be conducive to their plans.

• Oh a number of times throughout American history.

  The most popular single example of which was the Battle of Athens, where returning WW2 veterans used firearms to fight back against their corrupt local government that was using police brutality and voter intimidation to remain in power.

  Then there’s the rabbit hole of the whole Jim Crow era of American history. Back then local law enforcement was often allied or directly members of the Ku Klux Klan and would harass black communities at night. These communities would form an armed militia to protect their neighbors from government sanctioned violence.

  Ultimately, the whole anti-gun debate hinges on public trust of the government and law enforcement. You limit the possession of guns to people in positions of public trust and allow them to police the community and keep you safe from danger. When those people are the danger however, you only have America’s legal system to defend you. We obviously don’t allow the police to be openly corrupt. However what happens when all branches of government to the highest level are corrupt and you become an enemy of the state? Appeasing the government by giving up the one measly way you have of resisting them is not going to spare you.

• It’s a bolder than usual move for Sony to announce the end of physical media prior to a new console launch, and launch this “you don’t own the digital games you buy” campaign at the same time.

  The usual easy strategy is first you end physical media sales, let people be content with the idea that they own their digital games at least so that the only thing people think about is the convenience of digital, then after you launch your new console, get everybody locked in, that’s when you launch the “Oh you don’t own these digital games btw” campaign.

  The fact that they’re just doing all of this at the same time means they know they won’t lose any money over it because we’re sheep and the consumer just doesn’t care anymore
