Uhh oh, no, I haven’t answered within 9 hours, please excuse me for having a job and sleeping.
I’m thinking dude. Fitz has made some good points and I don’t want to brush that off, so now I’m thinking about his arguments, formulating my own opinion, formulating and double-checking my own arguments and all that while I’m at my day job. So PISS OFF with that crickets shit back to the .ml-Sever you crawled from!
Demanding a quick answer is not the measure of a great intellect OR of a good argument. People need to take their time and think instead of just screaming at each other.
Edit: Sorry I snapped. Just… give me some time dude, life’s happening at the same time.

Hm… right now associate member doesn’t have a meaning. It’s a category that doesn’t exist, so it’s easy to invite Canada into it, it’ll be FAR harder to agree on what it actually means.
And I don’t know if I would want Canada as a full member, because (as a federalist) I see the “ever closer union” promise of the european project, to be leading towards a single, federated, european state. And I don’t think Canada would be on board for that. They do not want to be the 51st state in a United States and we should now not assume that they would want to be the 28th state in a Federal Republic of Europe.
We should support them however we can and I’m all for the closest possible relationship, but not at the expense of our federalization.

I think the topic attracted mainly feddit.org users and most of us still know what nuance means and how Israel and Zionism are discussed in the german speaking world. shrug
But yes, I am glad too, because I have been heavily downvoted in the past on that topic. And while downvotes can be a good indicator of if one has a shittake, sometimes the purity-testing of my fellow lemmings just completely throws nuance out the window.

Zionism has two different meanings in how Germans use the word.
- The state of Israel has a right to exist.
- Israel has the right to be a jewish apartheids-ethnostate that actively controls it’s non-jewish population.
Habeck falls firmly in the first category and stands firmly against the second one. He called the “Settlers” terrorists and heavily criticized the Israeli government. He called out brutality and that the Netanyahu government has created a different Israel than the one Germany should support.
He says the necessity exists for a state where jews can live in safety, that is a far cry from “Israel should be a jewish state”.

Yes, but… He was the best we had in higher political circles. Did he and Annalena crush the Fundis and move the Greens slightly to the right? Yes, they did and we should hold them accountable for that. We should also never fear to point out their failures, like you did here. But we should absolutely rally behind him when the alternative looks like Merz or even worse… like the Alt-Right-ernative.

The EU has already announced they will implement an age checking mechanism that doesn’t transfer personal data. Furthermore while the Comission is data-hungry, they don’t get to vote on the laws, that is the job of the European Parliament and that has a record of actually protecting their citizens privacy, even from the EU itself.

-
on consent rule in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 Sep 2026
@protist@mander.xyz has already made my point for me. But let me add another layer.
We’re only talking here on the level of individual rights and consequences, and that tastes extremely cynical and libertarian to me. Both things I associate with an inconsiderate, overly individualist approach that is indicative of a failed state and a breakdown in societal cohesion.
I honestly think the more important factor to this question is societal. The real question is, what kind of society do we want to live in?
- One where killing another human being for personal reasons is endorsed or one were it’s seen as an absolute last resort of protectimg other people?
- One where the monopoly of violence rests with the state or one where we hold violence to be an individualist right?
- One where you have the right to kill yourself or one where you also have the right to kill a (consenting) other?
Yes, you have a right to consent to be killed. But from that doesn’t rise the right for somebody else to kill.
There is a reason the age of dueling ended when the enlightenment and humanism became something our societies adopted as a whole instead of those things being just the pursuit of some airy intellectuals. And it is that, with the rise of democracy, people became aware that they have the right, but also the duty to shape the society we live in to be better. This - for me - is the central point of civilization, to actively construct and shape a society that grows continually more moral and drives us to listen to “the better angels of our nature” to say it in Lincoln’s words, instead of listening to our baser wants.
Off Topic Rant: It is truly terrible to me, that all around the world politics has devolved from giving the great example of striving for (even if not achieving) a more moral, peaceful, unified and just society to giving the example of letting ourselves be governed by greed, egotism and our baser instincts.
That’s honestly the one thing I loved about Merkel and Obama, even if they were two useless, right leaning conservatives (yes, mainstream democrats are conservative, honestly the GOP is reactionary and fascist at this point. Fucking hell the Overton-window is so far to the right), they still inspired people to rise to our better nature. And that is also the biggest societal threat I see from especially Trump being in office. The example he gives for society as a whole is a return to criminal, amoral, egotistical and cynical barbarism.

on Internal revolt as 'nuts' Apple execs appease Trump: 'There is not a soul who is for it' in c/technology@lemmy.world · 3 Sep 2026
Apple, Google/Alphabet, Microsoft, those are some of the pupeteers. The Orange Pedo, The Guardians Of the Pedophiles (GOP) party, and the corporate Fascism Lite Democratic Party (we promise to build one concentration camp fewer than the GOP, so vote for us Dems) are the lackeys.
Honestly I think the comparison with the 3rd Reich don’t go far enough. Like with the Nazi-Party the GoP is captured by corporate interests but also the people in power are running their own agenda. It’s a “dance on the volcano”-alliance which each side trying to control and use the other. Corporate interest put the Republicans in power and support them to accrue more money and power and dismantle the state that has regulated them. Meanwhile the MAGA-Movement is promoting corporate interests to enrich themselves, create the appearance of economic growth, ensure corporate backing especially in the media and dismantle the democracy that delegates power to the masses.
Both sides completely disregard how important the state, regulations and democracy are to create the freedom, stability and wealth they have build their power on and which they think they created themselves.
The problem both sides face is that their goals run contrary to each other in the end. The fascists want power over industry, the market and finance while corporate interests suffer under the isolationist politics of fascists. In the end only one side will come out on top and the other side will have been the ones furthering their own removal from power. Like big corporate in the third Reich was brought more and more under state control.
The real winners will be the people sitting at the junction of party politics and corporate power. The Trumps, the Musks, the Thiels and of course the military industrial complex.

on Germans pitch EU plan to circumvent national vetoes | Euractiv in c/europe@feddit.org · 3 Sep 2026
Nah, the expression has merit in political science, it has only recently been profaned by the US reich wing, because they like to couch their bigotry in the language of science, sociology and intellectual rigor. Because by misusing and coopting those terns, they get to redefine them in the public eye and weaken arguments against their position that rely on those terms.
Your perception of the term “tyranny of the majority”, a term originally coined to point out the conservative overreach against and suppression of minorities, is a great example of how they colonize language.

See that nothing links to Google or Facebook, I want the most information we can get about our visitors while as little as is needed to be GDPR compliant and give nothing to big data.”
The result is we’ll collect data about how visitors use the website without any personal information, completely anonymous until you log in. No ads, no tracking, no Google Analytics and no active social media snippets until the user themself activates them. And we were still able to see what was doing good or doing bad on the site.

Yes, nationalism pales in comparison to what we can achieve as a federation!
I like Volt and especially what they do for a pan-european identity. on Canada's PM Carney: "This fall we will begin intense discussions with the European Union, the world's second-largest economy, to build a much stronger and deeper economic and security partnership" in c/europe@feddit.org · 26 Aug 2026
I’m in Italy and I’m under the impression that I’m in the minority that does, not sure of what’s like elsewhere
I’m in Germany, but I live in a fairly leftist, academic bubble. In my bubble the European identity is already way more important than the german one. But I’ve read that Germans in general are, for historical reasons, less caught up in their national and more in their regional identities and since those are already subsumed under a common german one the step to a common european identity is easier than it might be for more centralized nations.
I fear that having that many entities would complicate things
I get that and I share that feeling. For small-scale representation we have the parliament and that’s already a smaller scale than the region. Currently we’re treating the Council of the European Union as an upper house equivalent, representing the member-state governments and in theory the CoR could become an upper house instead. But as you said it would complicate things. Not least because the political power of regions varies vastly among member-states. Bavaria for example has massive budgetary and legislative power at home while regions in highly centralized France don’t.
I think a better way to enforce subsidiarity would be to give binding consultation rights to the Council of Regions. This would mean that while it wouldn’t vote on every law, the EU would legally be prohibited from passing laws affecting local governments without the explicit approval of the regions. Basically veto power if a majority of the regions feel something goes against their interest.
Right now the Council must be consulted, but can then be ignored.

And on the topic of time:
Voßkuhle, by contrast, spoke of a “gradual transformation into a European federal state.” The political agenda claims that we are still a long way from such a development, but in reality, it is already taking place. “It may be that we are talking about a European federal state as something far off in the future and fail to recognize that we are already living in one.” One must be careful not to set in motion a gradual, unnoticed process “that we cannot control,” the president of the court said.
This was the president of the german constitutional court, and I think that he’s right about the EU sliding into a de-facto federal state faster than we recognize. This is imho. why we should start to quickly organize as one so we have some more control over what the result is instead of ending up in another mess of a de-facto status that is not entirely regulated de-jure.

on Canada's PM Carney: "This fall we will begin intense discussions with the European Union, the world's second-largest economy, to build a much stronger and deeper economic and security partnership" in c/europe@feddit.org · 26 Aug 2026
The details are open to debate, in the end we as citizens will have to agree on something. Personally I would not be opposed to keeping the national states as a form of federal states under the umbrella of a common federal government, but then again I could see a more prominent role for the European Committee of the Regions solving some serious issues.
I’m not a regionalist and not a nationalist, I don’t care in principle if we break national states up into regions and those then reorganize, split or unify however they please and federate into a european state or if the existing national states federate as-is. And because I don’t care I think the people who do care (like the various european seperatist movements) should be allowed to plead their case and make an argument about it.
Personally I am not affected enough by any of this to have a strong opinion and I suspect that, with a European Union that takes on many of the responsibilities and decisions that rest with national states right now, those movements to separate or unify would lose a lot of urgency. Just like (for example) the Troubles basically stopped when both the UK and Northern Ireland were part of the EU, without a rigid border between them.
I find the Europe of Regions conceptually fascinating, I’m just also worried that regionalist or nationalist tendencies could increase if we treat borders more like dividing lines between cultures, ethnicities, languages, religions or histories rather than imaginary lines on a map that only influence administrative divisions.
But I also understand that those things affect people and identity can be very caught up in it, so…
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ make a good case to abolish nations and have regions be the federal states instead and I’ll listen.

What the EU is, is something open for debate and common decision among EU citizens, but personally I prefer a federalist approach and think I can make a good argument for it.

At least some Canadians seem to agree. I was honestly surprised by how positive the reaction was, even though I still think that Canadian membership would be a roadblock to the EU becoming a single, federated state.

But honestly, it’s just because I have been taught to be a gentleman to women by my mother. I do think though that they have SO much shit to deal with in our society, it’s okay to value them a little more than men now and then.
