• I really wish there was a word that was as useful as “dude” but without the gender connotation.

  I tried swapping to “fam” and “cuz” but those felt appropriated, I tried “gamer” and “chat” but those felt irony-poisoned, “Sis” and “girl” feel performative. So “dude” it shall be until someone tells me it’s bad, and then they get no objective article at all.

• the measure is primarily intended to prevent third parties from buying lower-capacity boards, replacing their RAM with cheaper parts of uncertain origin and then reselling the modified hardware as a higher-capacity model. The company argues that such modified boards have not undergone its validation process and could subsequently generate support requests if unstable memory is blamed on the company.

  The solution to this decidedly rare problem is authorized resellers, not an arbitrary block on a very technically demanding upgrade.

  That’s assuming this is the actual problem though. If the problem is actually “We want to make more money by charging extra for ‘enthusiast models’” then this is the correct tactic to ensure that you aren’t undercut by cheap labor.

• I know someone at work who is often “a-political” and tries the whole let’s hear out all sides.

  I tend to be this guy when I am mostly unfamiliar with an issue, largely because I want to know the whole situation, and more importantly, the reasoning behind each side’s arguments before I publicly take a position one way or the other.

  In this case though, it’s pretty obvious to see who the oppressor is.

• It’s kind of a difficult problem to solve.

  Effective regulation requires lawmakers to have a solid understanding of the thing being regulated. This is not really feasible with something as complicated and nuanced as “information technology” and it’s how you get especially stupid rules like the ones coming into the 3D printer space to prevent manufacturing ghost gun parts.

  Guaranteed, those started from a place of “We all agree that a lower barrier of entry to making firearms is bad. How do we control that?”

  Theoretically, this is the purpose of a lobby group. You have someone that is familiar with subject matter to propose sensible regulations to keep the industry honest, but in practice it’s just industry leaders that pay for regulation to choke out competition, or to loosen restrictions to be more predatory.

• The cybersecurity specialist in me really doesn’t like the idea of having enough wire in public spaces that it’s essentially impossible to monitor, sending infrastructure related data.

  But then again, a weekend playing around with a flipper zero and a walk through town is enough to realize that it probably doesn’t matter.

• The other option would be a third party would check your ID an provide Google only with the information that the request is done by somebody of legal age.

  You’re just shifting the problem down the chain. There is no guarantee that this third party would be any more trustworthy than Google. They could even be less trustworthy, in fact.
