my i5 doesn’t have a built in graphics core. it’s just a CPU. this means hardware acceleration for video encoding is intensive.
like I said before too, there are other services that are running on the server as well. things like siem, aggregators, containerized desktops, etc.
thanks for the info though! if I ever upgrade the CPU in the future I’ll definitely get one with a GPU for hardware acceleration.

something that can push at least 2-3 4K streams.
12th gen i5 with 16GB DDR4. Maybe 32GB if I can swing it.
unless you’re transcoding each stream that should work, at least for Plex.
Currently running 10th gen i5 with 32gb of DDR and can run one 4k transcode, five 1080 streams, and four live TV streams. though, the transcode is laggy but if you pause and let it buffer it should work.
keep in mind I’m also running headless transmission, a VPN, tor, and like 8 other services on the same server.
if all you’re streaming is 4k, you will hit a point of diminishing returns on network throughput. I’d recommend getting a switch with SFPs and connect your server up to a 2.5gbe or even a 10gbe (though overkill but the sky is the limit). as long as all your stream boxes are connected through that switch on their regular 1gbe they should be fine.
personally I run a opnsense router/firewall and have everything passed through an unlocked Brocade ICX6610-48P-E. you can find them on eBay. FYI, these are commercial units and are VERY LOUD. basement or attic installation is a must if you don’t have a network closet. bonus, the ICX6610 allows you to turn on/off POE per port and even set the voltage. this means you can power everything from cameras, stream boxes, wireless APs, to even some POE lights. it’s also a managed switch, which means you can split your ports up on VLANs and other really neat things.

think of a WAF as a smart reverse proxy with logging intelligence.

By default, routers do not retain access logs, and permanently delete messages and queues when requested. Messages persist in memory or in a database until they cross a threshold of time, typically on the order of days.[0] There is still a risk that a router maliciously records all queues and messages (even though encrypted) sent via the same transport connection to gain a partial knowledge of the user’s communications graph and other meta-data.
what this means is don’t blindly trust a random public router.
if you host your own router, you can set the threshold to hours or seconds. you can also ensure that your router isn’t maliciously storing records.
simplex uses an in-memory queue to store messages for delivery. if the server was extracted for legal measures, this means the messages are erased and difficult if not impossible to collect.
for signal, they are written to disk. this means there is evidence of communications between users. even if you host your own signal server, it will be there.

as I pointed out in your other comment. signal uses a database, fails to explain why a database is required, and doesn’t even make a mention of it in their technical information.
why use a database at all? that just introduces more attack surface area and complexity for attackers to leverage.

simplex messages stay on your phone. you can’t switch phones and have them follow you because there’s no way to sign in because there’s no account for you to sign in with.
simplex doesn’t require a phone number or email. the trust is made between users, keeping users safer because it requires physical access between users. sure you can share your code over SMS or otherwise, but that’s a user issue that breaks usage policy, not a problem with the software.

messages are signed, encrypted and passed through servers, never left on the server. unless you were the intended recipient you will not decrypt it.
