Not only does borg have strong encryption, it also has git-like incrimental versioning and insanely good compression and de-duplication.
For example, I backup my whole 700GB OS drive (personal data + the whole linux OS install with all my tweaks and configs) - I set it to keep the last 15 “snapshots” (7 daily, 4 weekly, 3 monthly, 1 yearly) and all it takes on the borg server is 800GB.
I like using borgmatic for automatic borg backups, but it’s optional.

Hence why I wrote specifically about the open Internet. You are right: there are ways to give people access to only a selected part of the Internet. If parents decide to do that, fine; doesn’t have to concern any website operators, or any adults.
Like I said, I agree. But your initial argument is no good. You toss everything into one box to make your claim appear stronger but in doing so you actually make it dismissable. Stay differentiated.

You keep speaking in extremes and absolutes. There is also pornographic content walking outside on the street in the city if you so wish to classify it (and some people certainly do to they point where they get turned on by seing a bare ankle).
Certainly the pictures and videos on wikipedia which you chose to consider pornographic rather than neutrally informative have a different set of qualities then what you would find in the extreme sections of porn-serving websites.
There is a middle ground. You can give partial access. And age verification is one more tool for that (we already have parental controls for routers and mobile internet simcards and smart devices)
I don’t like nor want age verification btw. I just don’t agree with your arguments against it.

Do you know what de-anonymization online can do?
Exactly, de-anonymize you, based on your behaviour patterns collected over years and decades and any data they can lay their hands on. It doesn’t matter if you switch accounts or phones or both every week or even type of device.
If every one of your new accounts/devices is at the same place, is awake at the same time, uses the same apps, has the same typing rhythm, browses the same websites at the same time of day and logs in with the same accounts and sings the pokemon theme song in the shower every morning and walks in the park twice a day with dog barking and “good boi” sounds happening in closest proximity to the tracking device you carry in your pocket - they’ll be pretty sure it’s the same person.
Wasn’t there a scandal just last week about Samsung smart tv’s recoding audio nonstop and sending it to their servers, even when they are “turned off”?
And even if you are a hermit that cut off all their devices and access to the internet altogether, other peoples devices will collect data about you, enumerate you as a seperate entity from the device holder and keep collecting and patternmatching.

Using the neutral term “information” here is doing a lot of heavy lifting for your argument.
Nobody is banning the youth from accessing wikipedia or a library or minecraft.
And if a young person really wants to watch at porn, torrenting/piracy will always be there without age verification.
Speaking of minecraft and circumvention, do you remember the uncensored library map? techdirt.com/…/routing-around-damage-censored-rep…
I bet someone inclined to do so could host a pornhub mirror/proxy inside of a modded minecraft map.
But also, if the parents decide that it’s part of growing up they can just give their kids access to porn.

I don’t know why besstiolle is getting downvoted when they are correct.
When people say that there is very little of something the natural way is “hardly any rain” for example. So if you invert the meaning from “any” to “none”/“no” the whole sentence means the opposite.
I guess it could be explained as follows (but I am no ethymologist, just thinking aloud here, may be wrong):
“hardly any rain” means that there is so little of it, it is hard to even say that there is any rain.
If your friend says to you “There is no rain” and you go outside and it pouring, you could say 'Hardly “no rain!” ’ As a kind of mocking comment highlighting that it’s the complete opposite of no rain. It is very hard to call is “no rain” when it’s raining so much.

She achieved some virtue signaling responses that didn’t actually improve the issue from the side that was already pro and being called a sock puppet from the side that was con.
What Greta has achieved in modern times with her actions, not with speeches, is way more powerful.

ipv6 works fine on my intranet.
If big company A or B can’t get their shit together don’t blame the victim. But if you don’t believe me, I invite you to a debugging session. Honestly I’d be happy to be proven wrong if it works in the end.

Every time I try to use Ipv6, I run into dozens of weird issues and bugs and my selfhosted stuff becomes unusable/unreliable.
I don’t know where the issue exactly lies in the chain of networking, but it sure is annoying as a motherfucker to debug. As far as I can tell none of my stuff is the problem and the issue lies either with my ISP or VPS provider.
For now, I removed the AAAA entries and suddenly everything works without any hiccups. Wake me up when those issues are solved… maybe in 10 or 20 years…

You write “participate” which sounds like a free choise, but I don’t do it out of my own free will. I do it because the web is so enshittified, that it forces me to selfhost more and more of my own websites that only I use.
I fucking hate doing any devops. I think it’s the most boring, soul sucking task there is. Fucking yamls and .env and config files in different places for every app with it’s own syntax.
I tried passing it to an LLM but it’s always subtly wrong, so in the end I still have to read everything, correct everything, generate keypairs, configure something on each client etc.
Every day a million bots are hammering my services, so I have to run crowdsec and fail2ban and make sure there are no ways in, everything is behind a login, up to date, constant manual migrations to newer versions cause one of my hunders of apps always has a breaking change.
I’ve written more devops and security related stuff on my CV than my carreer programming experience. I got a job because now I am not just a fullstack developer, but a fuller stack devsecops-veloper. Showing my homelab and docker setup during a fucking java + react interview landed an immediate yes at the wage that I wished.
I fucking hate devops. Now I have to do it in my free time and at my job. Why does the world force me into devops? Please take it away. Let somebody else handle it. I want to enjoy my life again.

I’m a gui pleb, so I do all my selfhosting through dokploy, which uses traefik under the hood and I’m quite happy with it so far.
