Containers are the answer to “why is my hard drive completely full”
Hold up, are people just out there not using Alpine for a container base image?

I see you haven’t made it into the weirder parts of the internet yet.

I thought that too, but then I needed a VGA cable for work, and my cable hoarding ways were vindicated.

So I had a suspicion, and yup, this was another ticket for DWB. Flock was just the excuse du jour.

on UN working towards international treaty to regulate killer robots in c/technology@piefed.social · 6 Sep 2026
The treaties are only good for as long as people think they don’t need the weapons.
I’d be willing to bet that there’s a lot of non-nuclear countries that either have, or can very very quickly put together a nuclear weapon.

I really think that this is one of those “you can’t put the genie back in the bottle” type situations. Any attempt to keep it from happening is good, but I do think that it’s far too late.

on How to physically isolate a camera with OpenWRT, tagged VLANs and Docker in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 5 Sep 2026
Networking headaches are the main reason why I’ve done everything I can to get away from docker. I’ve had easier times spinning up an LXC container and building from source than I have had fighting with docker networking.

The way my luck works, I’d survive the crash itself, but the crash would occur in the middle of the ocean.

apt install
softwareVs
Search "
software"click download, accept security warning, navigate to wherever your default download location is, double click installer, click your way through the installer (make sure do deselect whatever crapware it tries to package along with).Yup, the Windows way is totally so much easier.

I’m guessing that they made it location dependent like they did with the Gulf of Mexico. In Canada it’s still showing Lake Ontario.

Ah, but didn’t you hear? Corporations are people, and since they’re the biggest and loudest (money is speech after all) people, they get all the attention.
It’s astonishing how much damage those two decisions have caused.

on Ubuntu is growing faster on Windows 11 than on native Linux PCs, says Canonical in c/technology@lemmy.world · 19 Aug 2026
Oh I can think of many examples. That was just the latest one.
There was also the time that IT decided that industrial controls technicians didn’t need the ability to manually set IP addresses, or the time where they managed to have %Documents% point to a network share, while they were simultaneously trying to sort out wifi coverage issues.

I’m guilty of using WSL to bypass what the IT department has done, but that’s partly due to our IT department being borderline useless. To prove my point to them one time, I took a project and compiled it in Windows normally, in a fresh Windows VM, and in WSL. A 20 second compile in WSL took 2 minutes on the Windows host.

I was going to suggest that maybe a person managed to simply have absolutely zero online presence, but then I realized that having zero online presence probably gets you on a watchlist itself.

That’s assuming that wherever you are going to or coming from has an internet connection. It’s likely that there will be a connection, but it’s still not a guarantee. And if there is a connection, the size of the files you’re carrying may make using that connection impractical.
It’s pruned down to a very small size. Occupies only a couple mb on disk. By default leaves out a bunch of features that are unnecessary for a container base image.
