• You don’t use LLMs to look for cancer, you use purpose built image recognition AIs, and they do help as showcased in the MASAI trial.

• Because people want to set the fridge temperature precisely to 6C, and not turn a century old tech of a mechanical thermostat located inside it to an arbitrary setting between “off” and “three”.

  And if you want to be able to do that, an electronic switch is literally the only way: you now have a computer that is responsible of doing “if current_temp > set_temp then compressor = on”. When that computer stops working, so does the fridge.

  Not an issue if that’s the only thing that computer does. Probably an issue if it’s complicated enough to support Xbox live streaming so you can play Doom on it.

• Yes, though this law specifically requires that users can “having their default feed … opt out of algorithmically ​recommended content and instead see posts only from the friends and creators they ⁠choose to follow.”.

  Basically all platforms inject other posts in your feed somewhere either as “recommendations” or just paid ads, and very few default to your subscriptions when you open an app.

• My doorbell is a sign that says “Knock”, because my 70’s doorbell is broken. It requires 0 cloud services to fix the problem of people pressing an unhelpful button.

  [EDIT] To people downvoting this, did you read the article? Specifically, this part:

  “Before we had the doorbell, people just knocked on the front door. But now, people would notice the doorbell and ring it instead. This would send a notification to our phones, and then it would also helpfully play a sound on the doorbell itself… outside the door… which we could not hear.”

  He then goes on a tech bodgeathon to fix the button, instead of just placing a sing that says “Knock” to go back to the thing that worked before.

  One of the main points of GenAI is the ability to smush multiple concepts together. There are plenty of training data of children that are in swimwear, or just literally naked that has nothing to do with CP, and there’s boatloads naked adults and of course, porn, it can successfully combine them together even if there was no actual CP in there whatsoever.

• If you want actually pretty good smart home stuff, and for cheap, go to IKEA. By default they require nothing but being paired to a button/dial/motion sensor that works entirely on a local mesh network (Zigbee, or more recently Matter over Thread) between the devices. You can buy a hub, which again by default is local only - to control the lights using your phone you need to be connected to your own wifi. And if you really want to control them from somewhere else (or use Siri/Google Assistant etc), you have to specifically enable that functionality.

  And because they use matter, they work with most of the other matter stuff, and vice versa - I have a bunch of Aqara temp/humidity sensors connected to mine. And you don’t even need an IKEA hub, any Matter hub will work, and there are quite a few of them including stuff like the Google Home Speaker, a 3rd gen Apple TV, and the Apple Home Pod.

  Main downside? IKEA electronics aren’t exactly the most reliable things around.
