Which is weird, because when I was a kid, having movie/tv/comic tie in games usually meant a rushed/bad game, and thus should be avoided.

You think they care about things like facts, or logic? No. This is, and always has been about control.

Even the business side of things know piracy doesn’t actually hurt business, it helps it. They’ve conducted studies on this since 2004. They found that the vast majority of pirates are actually the biggest spenders. They found more often than not a pirate will download a movie, or an album or a game, or whatever. Then within a month buy that same thing they just pirated.

Thats the reason you used to see these record labels try to stop piracy back in the days of kazaa and napster, and limewire. There used to be lawsuits where they’d sue some household for 20 million dollars. Knowing they don’t have it. Well what ended up happening is they ended up suing this elderly man who had no idea what limewire was. He didn’t know how to use a computer. And the only one who used the computer was the 8 year old boy, who now had to live with his grandpa, because both his parents were killed by a drunk driver. Now this record label was trying to put his grandfather 20 million in debt. For someone who had no idea who the black eyed peas. When they kept asking him about it, he asked why they kept asking him about soup if this was about music theft.

As the case went on, it was revealed that between his parents, and other family members, he had a cd collection, including the albums accused of stealing, worth over $5,000 worth of cds.

The whole thing turned the public against record labels, and painted them as the bad guys for trying to ruin peoples lives over music. To this day I haven’t heard of another time they tried that tactic.

And the republicans know this.

You have to remember one thing. The cruelty is the point. It doesn’t need to make sense. It just needs to punish their enemies. And at times even punish their own base. I saw a story last night where a guy who voted for trump was complaining that insulin used to be $6, and now it’s $80 under trumps new plan. And he said “I didn’t think it would happen to ME!”

And thats where we are right now. Just leaving the fuck around stage. Now entering the find out portion of our journey.

There’s also the headlines that ICE is buying equipment from Boston Dynamics to use as AI guard dogs.

Ya know…I always thought that when we started living life in a 1984 world, there would be a pendulum. I figured it would swing the other way after enough people got tired of their shit. I thought there would be riots, and calls for violence against CEOs and the elite.

Had that happened, that’s the dangerous part. Because then, I don’t think Flock would stop this bullshit. I just think they’d do it more quietly. Let the people think their activism won the day, and then in secret, keep building up databases, keep spying on people. Did you know your own wifi router, regardless of which one you own, can map out your house? Did you know it can keep a real time sonar watch on where your body presence is in your own house in real time? Did you know the spy doesn’t even need to be in your country to watch you?

So I thought the real danger was when the people thought they had defeated the fascists. I thought people would feel they had won, and now things can go back to “normal”. With everybody in a false sense of security, everybody goes about their lives without thinking they’re being tracked/followed. Meanwhile they’re still behind the scenes with new projects that the public doesn’t know about, and is all kept quiet. That’s where I thought the push for AI by the billionaires was coming from. They don’t need it to work. They need the public to be dumb enough to think it works. They only need it to be good enough to use a camera, identify people/objects, and send the data back to them without anyone knowing. Meanwhile everyone else thinks AI is just the way you do everything now. That’s their plan. To make people reliant on their AI.

I hadn’t considered the fact that today, most people know ring doorbells are 24/7 monitoring systems that feed back to HQ, where the company freely sells this data to police and other organizations without a warrant. Most people know flock cameras track you through the city, street by street. Most people know ICE exists, kills people, and is running concentration camps. These are things people know…and yet, I see no action. I see no riots. I see no backlash.

I hadn’t considered that there would be no pendulum at all. It’s just all one way, and the people just accepted it. THATS the part I wasn’t counting on. I didn’t for a second consider that there would be no cat and mouse game. I was SURE the people would fight back when everybody realized what’s happening here. They’re not. People see these stories where Target wants you to download their app, so that they can spy on you in their store…which has been going on long before all this tech came out. Cameras in the ceilings have existed since forever…but now with the app, they can identify you by name, by face, and then you take your tracking device into the real world OUTSIDE of their stores. Their app monitors your cell phones buying habits. If you buy something from Walmart from your cell phone, they know. They know who you are, what you buy in real time, and how much you were willing to spend. They also sell that data to anyone who wants to buy it.

In 2014, I told anyone who would listen that the battle for Net Neutrality was important. Nobody would listen.

I forget the name of the bill now, but in 2019 there was a bill that would allow anyone to sell anyone elses data without the individuals consent. I warned anybody who would listen that this is a dangerous bill. No one would listen.

So now, those two things combined have made it so that your ISP, who knows every single service, and website, and app that you use, is now allowed to sell all that info to whomever wants to buy it. And other companies like Netflix can make deals with your ISP to slow down the connection to Hulu or Youtube, or any other video service, while leaving their own service unrestricted. And since Netflix is going to pay for that service, they may as well get a bit of information about you. So now they’re buying the data logs of what you do online. Now they know you buy dog food every 2 weeks. They know the brand. They know the volume. They know the flavor. They know how much you normally pay. So now they can tell the dog food company "Hey, give us money, and we can run commercials for your product, advertised to people who we know already buy your product. Or we could run a competitors ads instead.

Now we’re living in that world. A world that everybody told me “Net Neutrality isn’t that important.” is now seeing how one thing can build upon another. If ONLY Net Neutrality was the only thing broken, no. They couldn’t do all this stuff together. But it’s not the only failure point. It’s just the easiest one to take. Because most people don’t understand it. And in the short term, it changes nothing. So even when changed, people still said “See? Nothing changed!”. I said “Just wait”.

Now we’re here. I feel both validated and frustrated. Validated because I saw ALL this shit coming 10+ years ago. Frustrated because even when we’ve arrived in the fascist times I was trying to warn against, people STILL won’t admit that this isn’t just trump. Trump could die tomorrow. None of the bullshit changes. Trump is not a leader. He is a puppet. Puppets don’t control the situation. They distract, and entertain. That’s it. He doesn’t even know (or care) about all the destruction he’s causing. That doesn’t mean it ends when he leaves. There WILL be a new sack of shit trying to instill fascism into your daily life. There always is. Whether that person is named Reagan, or Bush, or Trump, or some other asshole. There’s always another round of bullshit. We aren’t addressing the core issues of our country which have existed since it’s founding. We’re only addressing the symptoms.

Except, now, we’re not even doing that. Everybody is just shutting up, and fucking off to accept it all.

So yeah, I’m frustrated because as far as I can see, everybody has just accepted that the elite will rule over us. Instead of…you know…breaking out the guillotines.

It really doesn’t need to be though. Let’s say he has a shitty little rocket.

Ok. So now lets shoot the rocket at the warship. Ok, it didn’t do much damage. Maybe it was even shot down by anti-air defenses. Now try shooting 900 of them at the ship. They’re cheap, they’re disposable. Sure, the anti-air might shoot a lot down, but you’re shooting down a $3 rocket with a 1 million dollar anti-air missile.

Even if you never hit the ship, you’re causing financial drain that cannot be sustained. You spend $10,000 on $3 rockets, fire them all off all day and all night, and the USA is using military grade defenses. That $10,000 might drain the USA half a billion dollars just to defend one ship.

Now scale that for every ship in the military. Little tiny unmanned rafts basically, shooting off cheap rockets at close range, and being defended by expensive ammo. All across the ocean. With the proper planning, you could probably drain the USA’s global navy in a day without sinking, or even hitting a single ship. All without losing anything at all.

There was a post I saw a few days ago where a guy removed the entire wifi board from his TV, and it still worked. Then someone said that LG tv’s will actually seek out bluetooth conmections, and try to piggyback off the other device’s internet connection.

I just can’t see the appeal of owning a smart tv.

No, I know I’ll be allowed to vote in the primaries. I also have zero faith that any worthwhile option will be allowed to run. So, vote between worthless option number 1, or worthless option number 2.

On top of all that, I’m still not convinced it’s not rigged from the start. Joe Biden in 2020 wasn’t considered a real option. He was in 5th place and assumed to drop out shortly. Bernie Sanders had a significant lead. Then, in the timespan of 3 days, Biden was far and away the clear cut leader. I’ve not since that day held any faith in the DNC.

And 2) Look at my alternatives. We all know trump is going to be the 2028 candidate despite that not being legal. I’m at a point where I don’t even think he’s going to use corruption to change the law. I think he’s just going to run, and nobody will do anything to stop it. As far as the democrats go, I don’t know who they’ll run, but I know they’ll be worthless. Probably Tim Walz or some shit.

So yeah, I got nothing to lose and everything to gain by voting for this random guy who may not even be eligable to run for president due to not being American. But hey, laws won’t exactly be the top priority in the 2028 election anyways.

I think we may just have a difference in perspective. I would call a buggy a car because it has wheels and carries passengers. I wouldn’t call it an automobile, because that implies an automatic engine, but I would consider it a form of car.

Same with BBS/Internet. Once you have a series of servers interconnected, and have access to them via an ISP, yes. That is a form of early internet. It dates back to something like the 1960s. Going back to NASA and government usage.

So I think we’re talking about the same thing with just a difference of perspective and opinion.

I’ve been saying this for years. Look at taxi’s. In my city in 2005 there were 8 major taxi companies. Each with hundreds of drivers on the road at any given time. Now we have 2 of those 8 remaining, and they’re essentially shell companies with 2-3 drivers on the road. The last 4 times I’ve tried ordering a cab the traditional way, I’ve been told there’s no drivers available. Now it’s all Uber. And Lyft. You can’t call them. You need a cell phone, and you need internet access.

All the major corporations are in agreement that we all need cell phones, and we all need to be tracked 24/7. And now with AI, they’re getting their data straight from the source. There are men out there who talk to an AI girlfriend. Not sexy stuff. I mean imagine sitting at the dinner table, and discussing your day…with your AI girlfriend. Meanwhile, ALL that data is going straight to the companies that host the AI.

Another side effect is that AI will make people dumber. In case you haven’t noticed since the 1970s, there has been a GOP push to make the citizens dumber and dumber. Easier to control. Easier to fool. Easier to get away with things.

So now you got ram being sold for computers that haven’t been built yet, to be put in data centers that haven’t been built yet, to run an AI system that isn’t functional yet, in order to steal the jobs of employees that can’t be replaced yet, all in an effort to chase profits that were never possible in the first place since everyone hates AI.

You wanna see some shit go down? Tell the companies we’ll use their AI if they get the unredacted epstein files released. See how fast they bribe the right people then.

Now tell the politicians we’ll stop caring about the epstein files if they forcibly ban all data centers in the country. See how fast they act on that.

Now we sit back, wait, and watch the fireworks. Oh, and by the way, we’re going back on our word either way. Whomever wins, fuck em.

I do not understand Linux. I do not understand terminal. Logically I should be using the more popular, easier to understand, financially backed operating system. The pattern used to be 1 bad windows release then 1 good release. XP was good, Vista was bad. 7 was good, 8 was bad. So I expected 10 to be good. And it just wasn’t. And the thing is, it never got back to how amazing XP was for it’s time. 7 was good, but it felt lacking. It should have been better. I didn’t switch from XP until the very end. And then I think I went another year or two unsupported. Until finally that PC died, and then I bought a Windows 7 PC almost into the days of Windows 10. And used that until 2023. I still use the PC hardware, but now I have ZorinOS. Which is fine. I almost know how to do things after 2 years. I still can’t figure out installing Audacious. Keeps telling me the package requires dependancies, but won’t install them. But day to day browsing, and various other tasks I get by reasonably well enough.

So you’d think I should have stuck with windows, but FUCK THAT SHIT!!! I will pay for a good operating system. I don’t care about the money. What I care for is a minimalist UI, with a start button and a task bar. Clock in the lower right, along with a shortcut to various other toggles, like bluetooth, wifi, display settings, ect. and next to the start button should be 3 shortcut program buttons. Right now I only have two. Firefox and the file manager. I need to right click the taskbar to have a context menu to give the option to start the task manager.

Zorin has all of that. It’s been two years, so I don’t remember how much of this I customized. I know for the first month I STRUGGLED. Then I finally got things the way I like. I know my current task bar is a mod. My setup feels very Modern day Windows XP. Except instead of “Start”, my start button says “Fuck”, because it makes me giggle that I can do that. All in all, I feel functional in someone elses home. You know when you stay with your friend on the other side of the country? And you’re there for like 2 weeks, and by day 10 it starts feeling like you kinda sorta know your way around everything in the house? But maybe you don’t know how to work the stereo system to work with the TV. So you just watch it with the TV speakers. That’s how I feel with Linux. I can get things done, but I don’t feel at home.

So when I see microsoft headlines like this, where it’s just straight up bullshit, I feel bad for those who still use windows. Then suddenly Linux starts to feel a lot more like home than Windows does these days. So good job Microsoft. You legitimately drove me away as a customer, and continued to keep me at bay simply by existing as you currently are.

On top of that, everything since the PS4 and even some of PS3, has been game files are on the disc, but incomplete. Disc is more or less a DRM security check to make sure you still have the game. Outside of that, you still have to download the full game basically. The disc is useless if you tried using this in the year 2067. By then I’m sure any service related to the PS5 will be long dead. Right now, I can buy and play NES games from 1985. I have no issue doing that. As long as your TV has component cable input, I can play an NES on your TV with an NES I can buy on ebay. The game and console both made in the 1980s. It will still work. Might need some isopropyl alcohol and a few q-tips, but it will work. 1985 was 41 years ago. 2067 is 41 years from now. I have zero faith that you’ll be able to use anything from the PS4 or PS5 era. That will become lost media. There may be issues connecting an NES to a modern TV in 2067, but if there are adaptors to make it work on whatever they use at the time, and if the physical plastic and brass hasn’t eroded, then you’ll STILL be able to use an NES in 2067. I have zero faith that Gen-Z will be able to show their grandkids what they played in 2018.

Good chance I’ll be dead before then, so I may not even see the day. My point stands though. We’re living in a digital only age, when we haven’t figured out how we will forever preserve these games. Because unless something crazy changes, I fully believe this generation is a generation you can only play now, while you can. My PS3 still has the PSHome app installed. I remember playing on PSHome for years. Then one day, they announced it would die, and all access to the service would be lost to time. Which is how it stands to this day.

I forget what the error says if you try to launch it now, but I stopped trying to launch it, because I was afraid it might self-delete.

Hmmmm, yeah. That’s what I thought. Everyone here is the wrong audience to really comment on this.

The reason peoples opinion here doesn’t matter much is because like it or not, Lemmy is a hive mindset.

Don’t like linux? Booooooo

Don’t care about open source? Boooooo

Don’t engage in antisocial behavior? Boooooo

And thats the audience here. It’s impossible for you to comment on the mental state of the general broad population when this site seemingly collects an audience that goes out of their way to stay away from the broad general population. How could you possibly relate to someone like my brother in law, who uses Windows 11, without issue? I asked him how he can stsnd all the AI, and the spying. I was expecting an actual answer, and maybe some insight as to how to not make Windows 11 the dumpster fire that it is. Instead, he defends Windows 11 with blind faith ignorance. Insisting that there is no spying in Windows 11, and the AI is actually a good thing.

And I watched as an entire room nodded along in understanding. All agreeing with these points. I realized in that moment that there is zero conversation to be had with these people. I know for fact that Windows 11 spies on you. I know for fact that there is AI in Windows 11. It’s easy to see that if left at its current rate, that AI and data centers that support AI will inevitably lead to mass water shortages.

And I’m confident that these words would land harder here on Lemmy, where I think 99% of you understand the gravity and real nature of what I’m saying.

The problem is, 99% of Lemmy’s typical userbase accounts for 0.01% of the general population. This website is a bubble. Which is a shame, because I fully believe the model for Lemmys infrastructure is the cure for the problems that the general population complain about.

But it’ll never be tested at scale. Most people do not give a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck about privacy, or open source, or decentralization. Facebook knows my phone number, and has photos of me. Against my consent. And my mom who’s in her 80s, who uses facebook to keep in touch with her sewing community, sees nothing wrong here.

Thats why the people here, who only support mastodon, will never understand why that stratagy won’t work for the masses. And honestly, even if it did, then it wouldn’t work for you.

Because twitter has something like 375 million users. When taylor swift wants to promote something, she does it on twitter. Because it’s where the people are. It’s also a right wing agenda platform, owned by a literal seig hailing nazi, but yet its still the default service regardless if you’re left or right. It’s just where the people are.

Here is what you have done. You saw an ocean. You took note of all the problems fish have in the ocean. You then designed a new concept where fish can swim in a tiny little manufactured pond. But if it gets too small, it can be scaled bigger. You removed the threats of being eaten. You’ve removed the fishing boats. You managed the algae. You planted seaweed so they have food. You installed everything a fish needs to have a happier healthier life from your perspective.

Except there’s no water in this pond. The fediverse concentrates so hard on the advanced features that would make for a great experience…and then forgets the basics that are needed to support life here. Social media only survives when it has an audience, just as fish only survive when they have water.

All the advanced stuff that goes unused in the fediverse means nothing without an audience. Basically if bluesky dies, the users go back to twitter.

You complain that mastodon is better. But bluesky only got popular because the general population didn’t want twitter with nazis. They wanted old twitter. Bluesky is old twitter without the nazis. Thats all they wanted. But it’s only got a tiny fraction of the audience twitter has. So again, taylor swift says her things on twitter. Not bluesky. Not enough people on bluesky to be considered the default. Just like the fediverse can’t keep fish surviving without water, the same is true on bluesky.

The order it goes is that celebrities need to say things to hold an audience. Before the internet, that platform was tv/radio. There were also a lot less celebrities. Because tv/radio just didn’t have a need to create more celebrities. But now, a celebrity can either get their message across to 375 million, or 14 million.

Celebrities go where there is an infrastructure that can handle their fame, and the audience goes where the celebrities go. Below that are us. We’re not the 14 million. Lemmy has 60k and shrinking. But for us the order goes “infrastructure THEN audience”. Which is never going to pull in a huge audience. It can support a large audience. Argueably better. But it’ll never be tested.

Sooooooooo, we as a nation have ALREADY just given up that trump can and will run for a 3rd term? I always said he’ll try to force a loophole. So far he’s done nothing of the sort. No loophole has been established. There is from a legal standpoint no reason to think he can currently run for a 3rd term.

Yet all across the internet I keep seeing people talk about it like it’s inevitable. Like we’re just going to skip the two term limit, and just pretend he found the loophole, because otherwise he’ll drag us through some bullshit to get there. So now, rather than challange him at all, we as a society have already given up, 2 years before the election even happens. We’ve come to accept that laws and constitution mean nothing. Trump is just going to run for a 3rd term. That’s just how it is. Laws don’t matter. Government doesn’t matter.

And who exactly decided all this? I for one plan on repeatedly challenging his ability to run for a 3rd term.

I really hope GTA 6 bombs HARD. Like, 30k total worldwide sales. I want them to have to reevaluate their strategy, and stop making GTA games so paint by numbers. The numbers are there to make them consistent flow of money. But they really make the missions become “Go to the yellow marker. Follow the target. Kill the gang that ambushes you. Lose the cops. Mission passed.”

With multiple cut scenes (that sometimes are unskippable depending on game) between each step.

I just want to enjoy the game, in single player, and have a full experience that doesn’t feel tacked on as an after thought.
