I definitely see the possibility for abuse, but making a zero-tolerance assumption that these glasses are worn only by pervs seems as mindless as assuming a black guy walking down your street is obviously casing houses to rob, because why else would he be there? Or that a man eating his lunch on a park bench is definitely, unquestionably a pedophile looking for child victims, because what other reason would he have?

TBF it’s not “already under investigation” as if something bad already happened. It and other robo-cabs are being evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for conformance to new safety standards designed to accommodate self-driving cars - such as not requiring them to have steering wheels or brake pedals.

Early adopters of handheld power tools must have made all kinds of screwy mistakes and produced crappy results that wouldn’t happen when you painstakingly did the same jobs manually. In fact, people are still doing that after 100 years. Amazing.

I get that - I had my favorite shows too that were important in me becoming who I am. But before TV people had been developing good values for thousands of years, without degrading their attention spans or other mental functions, and in the 75 or so years of its history I really don’t see any evidence that the industry is working toward putting it to any better use.

Right now I enjoy Tangle - but I don’t obsess on the news as much as most people I know. Focusing more on other interests keeps me saner. In general I think it’s healthier to have a couple news sources you peruse, rather than a “feed”. You look at items that interest you and then you’re done - like in the days of newspapers, when people would read what they wanted and they’d be finished with the paper. I think that sense of completion is important to mental health. You don’t get that from a feed because a feed is never empty.

When television started it had all the same potentials you mention in your first sentence, but by far its main use has been to convince people to buy crap they don’t need with money they don’t have. And that’s how it is now with the internet.

Social media itself is bad for your mental health. It encourages forming snap judgements using low quality information. Training yourself to use this kind of superficial thought process makes you easier to fool and manipulate.

Isn’t the AI “slop” detector also AI?
It’s from the 1950s or 60s. Maybe it was British made, or could be whoever wrote the ad copy used the British convention of “an” before words starting with “h”.
