• I’m still practicing my human art skills, my 3d modeling, sculpting, painting, my fundamentals.

  I’m still struggling to learn programming the hard way, only using a bot on my own GPU as a last resort to rubber-duck or explain higher-level concepts to my thick skull.

  Screw this hardware inflation, I’m holding out and keeping old machines around and I’ll drop back several tech-generations if I have to.

  I’m hoping if anything , my perseverance will be rewarded in a post-Ai-bubble world where I’m considered good at what I do, especially after the majority had simply thrown up their hands, given up, and brain-atrophied after they saw a generated Will Smith believably slurping 65 lbs of spaghetti and everything under the sun “But as a Miyazaki film.”

  It’s a monster that feeds on our fears to drive us into despair. We should refuse to let it see us flinch.

  Ahhh thank you, that makes a lot more sense! I don’t feel too at-risk on my desktop, but if I ever find myself having to take a laptop to like, DEF-CON, then sounds like it’d be pretty essential, along with full-disk-encryption, AppArmor/SElinux, and all those other “wildly inconvenient but more secure” protocols set up.😂 (Lmao that would be terrifying.)

  I might try to re-enable it just for the experience. After all, never know when some insane automated malware will hit the 'net that somehow exploits boot like that, and freaks out everyone who said “Nahh that’s not possible.”

• Woo, Tumbleweed! Their support of it is a pretty strong plus. I would get that screen sometimes too but it confused me a lot and I ended up just being like “Accept key I guess? Oh cool it boots.”

  What are you supposed to compare the key to? Nvidia’s repo on a website using a different device, or before you update or what? Is it like comparing checksums in Dolphin?

  I’m not particularly afraid of Evil Maids vs. my Tumbleweed desktop, as I’m much too poor for hired help (lol), so I just turned it off.

  They make compelling points about using it for laptops though.

• I kinda agree. Although, I think the logic is nuanced. There is value in being able to know your stuff when your advanced tools and reference materials aren’t readily available or have failed.

  … But then again I’m sure most of these kids aren’t going to be needing to emergency land a spacecraft by doing complex math from their head, Apollo 13 style… so… :p

  But the cynic in me agrees “exams are horseshit.” It feels like they’re often used as a filter to keep the degree/cert/whatever “valuable.”

• I agree with you. I’m not even 100% anti-AI even though a lot of how it is used absolutely reeks.

  Of course Big Business is gonna be all about shipping it fast and cheap to the detriment of all else as long as it “works right now.” The ridiculous farce of capitalism as we know it now is that their real goal is to sell off and bail at a profit just before all that vibe-debt comes due and things implode.

  It doesn’t mean it’s the best way to create software.

  It reminds me of how homes nowadays are thrown together and so ridiculously shoddy because it’s all about speed and holding together just long enough to sell.

• I think it sounds really weird, too. I don’t like the sound of that at all. I’m not a pro though.

  I’ll admit I enjoy carrying on little tutoring sessions with my GPU though. “How might I approach something like that?” “Can you explain this concept a bit differently?”

  But I try to do all the solid brain work myself. Letting the machine write the code for me feels…kinda gross.

  I actually think it’s awesome that it understands coding convention and codebases and stuff well enough. Saves a lot of time digging through the wreckage of search engines…

  But I don’t appreciate that a lot of its “skill” is pulled from the efforts of uncompensated coders.

• Yiiiiiikes. This is why I’m gonna be stuck on tailscale or another VPN only access for quite a while. I know it’s not perfect, but exposing ports on today’s Internet is scary.

  I know I don’t have the mental overhead to secure literally everything, and have a solid contingency for when some botnet armed with a zero-day inevitably breaks it.

  Really glad this person wrote this write up about how that happens and what it looks like though. It’s REALLY interesting and I learned a lot!

  Recently encountered this with people knocking FOSS as “children’s software”, clearly because they’ve already sunk enormous cost into their expensive licensed corporate pipeline and they don’t want a FOSS artist getting a piece.

• I remember that vividly. That is so disgusting. EA has been such a contentious company because they hold so many good licenses but they’ve also had some of the most predatory, scummy execs. Isn’t that the guy who went on to ruin the Unity engine? Lol

  EA’s current position isn’t much better.

  But yeah, that’s a huge reason I’m either buying / playing indie, or I’m waiting for a deep deep sale. Indie devs aren’t nearly as often scheming to pull one over on the folks who put food on their tables.

  I was joking that they’d steal the old arcade quarter-muncher cabinet model and claim it was “new and innovative.”

  The AAA execs are garbage human beings ruining the very recreation we escape to in order to forget about how their ilk are actively destroying the world over their compulsive greed.

  GoG.com and Itch.io seem to be the only ethical digital distribution models left to us. Steam is so far benevolent enough to earn an “enjoy it while we have it.”

• I’m intrigued a LOT by Podman but also I’m already running some Docker stuff and it’s working.

  I’d really like some guides on how to switch over and what all that entails, that isn’t written like I have 13 cloud certificates and this is another day at the office LOL.

  So, 100% skill issue on my part.

  In great news though: OpenMediaVault has Podman support in its GUI now! Love them.

• Maybe I can help! I’m sure somebody knows a slick CLI way, but I know that using YAST Package Manager (or maybe the new and fancy Myrlin), you can see what version of packages are installed and from which repo.

  If it’s available in the standard SUSE open repo, you can just switch to that.

  Also, you can go to that open repo and there’s an option at the top that says “Switch all packages to this repository” or something like that. Then you can probably safely remove KDE-Games if you don’t want it.

  The KDE-Games repo sometimes will have drivers or game related tools and things like that, but no, I don’t think it’s strictly necessary if there’s nothing in it you want.

• Honestly great switch though. OpenSUSE is lovely and I bet you’ll like Zypper. :)

  Definitely make sure you know how to use BTRFS Snapper rollbacks and always zypper dup (not up) on Tumbleweed!
