Yeah, that’s AI in my book. It’s almost certainly the output of machine learning using lots of sensor data, trained on mountains of older data. How is that not AI?

How do you detect these occurrences then? You can’t differentiate a lane change from a curving road without analyzing the environment.

Idea: cars all have too much AI in them anyway, let’s make good use of it. If a car detects that the driver turns or changes lanes without signaling 5 times in a row, it caps the speed to 50 km/h (or 30 in an urban area) for 5 minutes. Make this a mandatory safety feature in all new cars, like how they make noises if you don’t wear a seatbelt.

Thanks, I needed that clarification. But I’m still not super sure what I’m looking at… is the skin in the second panel supposed to belong to the huge dragon in the first panel? It doesn’t make sense. Presumably there’s a huge body attached to that head, the shapes just don’t make sense.

But more to the point, it’s a popular(-ish) meme format for when you have to go do something you hate (or end up hating) and then you’re so freaking happy to be back to your comfort zone. I.e. exactly how it’s used in this post. Who she is and the whole backstory of how it happened is really not important, I believe the feeling she was conveying is real, even if the act of actually kissing the ground was just a stunt for the camera.
There are better things to be angry about.

After some reflection, I’ve removed this Easter egg. It’ll be gone in the upcoming man-db 2.8.0.
I’m glad that it made some people smile, which after all was the whole purpose of it, and my Twitter notifications and so on today suggest that most people thought it was more amusing than annoying. Still, some people did find it annoying, and six years seems like a pretty good run for that sort of thing; it probably isn’t going to get significantly better exposure than it already unexpectedly has by way of this question. Time to put it to bed.

Right, I guess that’s what turns me off from it, somehow you put it into words better than I ever could. But it’s still nowhere near “slop”, and I don’t like it being slandered. It’s entertaining (for those who enjoy it), it’s harmless, and the smoothness of the animations can even scratch a “competence porn” itch. I really think they’re going for an ASMR kind of thing, and it’s working. And I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I can also guess that that’s why they’re going for those kinds of subjects in most of their videos. Anything that is even a little bit controversial or political can turn people away, so it’s safer to stick with things that are a bit detached from the world. … Or something like that.
Not to mention that any topic that doesn’t call for cool animations is immediately out of the running. The coolest animations come from the exact kinds of topics you described. Something on the cusp of science and science fiction.

How is it slop? I occasionally watch it, and my bullshit detector never went off. They do a good enough job simplifying complex topics into very approachable and fun-to-watch animations.
I really don’t see anything bad about what they make. I’m not a huge fan, but that’s only because it’s not precisely my jam. But I get the impression that it’s well researched and, obviously, very well produced. No slop in sight.
