I have a compressor travel fridge. I’ve had it for about six years. The display died this summer, so I had a hard time knowing what temperature it was set to, or if it was even on. (Crotch goblins love to press buttons that go beep).
Anywho, I got a new display circuit for it with Bluetooth. The only reason I paired my phone to it is so others can’t fiddle with the settings at the local campground.
Same thing with my e-bike. I don’t want someone else pairing their phone with it and locking me out.

on is K2 horizons historically significant as the first actual open-source LLM, or am I falling for hype? in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 4d ago
I have a bit more memory, so I jump between the two qwen 3.8s.
Glimmer muse was a good contender in the MoE space for a few days. Might be more viable on 8gb.

I try most models, that get support in llama.cpp or forks. IIRC I wasn’t overly impressed with this one. Slower than it should be, mostly because its KV cache is huge.

on What 32-bit hardware are you still selfhosting on? in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 1 Sep 2026
I can’t recall where I got them. Probably the cheapest stuff off of eBay or Amazon. Looks like adafruit has one, too.
The original remote for my Panasonic units sends all the settings over IrDA, so I only had to record and replay the commands to turn it on and off.

The only internet-connected 32-bit device I own is a PowerBook G4 running MorphOS. I have an OG raspberry pi that controls a model lighthouse that we have for decoration.
In my old house I had two pi zero W:s with IR-HATs that turned on the air conditioning when they saw my phone nearby over Bluetooth. I’d still run those if I lived there.

on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell · Bit Nebula in c/technology@lemmy.world · 1 Sep 2026
I have a wireless doorbell with a speaker that plugs in to an outlet.
I’d much like to replace it with a zigbee-button, but I’ve had issues finding a foolproof (wife-approved) zigbee thing to make the ding-dong-noise.

This was great at first, but ten years in their hearing has gone. They’ll sleep through me yelling at the top of my lungs now.

on What is your cloud backup solution? in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 29 Aug 2026
No, well I do the first mount over sshfs, then wrap EncFS because I don’t trust hetzner with my unencrypted data. rsync just makes sure I only copy whatever files changed since last run to keep traffic at a minimum.

I’ve gone up one size. 5TB for 10,90€.
Weekly cronjob that mounts the storage box, an EncFS volume and rsyncs my files.

on UK/EU homelabbers: would you host a hardened Pi so I can watch baseball I already pay for? in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 26 Aug 2026
This.
However, there are plenty of residential proxy services to purchase. People are willing to sell their liability for perks, and others are willing to buy. I’m sure there’s a whole dark economy around this. It’s what OP is asking for without the extra steps.

on As demand for Meta AI glasses explodes, it’s harder to avoid creepy recordings | Ars looks at Zuckoff, the latest free app detecting Meta AI glasses amid privacy backlash. in c/technology@lemmy.world · 21 Aug 2026
I don’t even want pervert glasses. I barely even take pictures with my phone.
What I really want is that projection from those O.G. Google glass that projected image straight in your eye. Then I could watch porn all day every day everywhere.

on Reddit forces login to access old.reddit.com in c/technology@lemmy.world · 11 Aug 2026
I don’t like to spend my days on reddit, so I have my Hermes agent scrape the subreddits I want news from to get a digest. Today it started failing. So my Hermes agent got the credentials to a throwaway and carried on like usual.
You don’t have to pair it with you phone… but if I don’t, what’s doing somebody else from doing it and e-locking it when I leave it on the street.
