• Instead of recommending OpenStreetMap.org, I would suggest Cartes.app as the Google maps replacement (uses OSM data). It contains most features that Google Maps users are used to and will feel familiar to them. OpenStreetMap is more of the backend for mapping apps rather than a direct replacement for Google Maps.

  Cartes for most features (satellite view, reviews, shareable links that work for anyone, etc.) and CoMaps for offline/driving directions.

• This is happening on the mobile version of Edge where users are being offered a referral scheme. If you can get a friend to switch to Edge via a referral link, you’ll receive 500 Microsoft Rewards points (with the ability to accumulate up to 7,500 points per month if you’re feeling ambitious).

  You can redeem a $5 gift card for Microsoft for 5,500 points, or a $5 gift card for Amazon for 6,500 points.

  So basically they’re giving you $0.39 - $0.45 per referral with a maximum of $5.77 - $6.81 per month.

• Supply and demand.

  When there’s not enough of something, the price goes up. This incentivizes someone to make more of it and put it out into the market, which in turn will drive the price back down.

  The problem here is that there are very few places in the world with the capability of producing these higher end electronics and practically only 3 companies in charge of this. So, if they collude together as a “triopoly”, they can artificially raise prices.
