AI is an umbrella term that covers so many things. Like chess machines have been called Ai for decades before LLM. NPC behavior in videogames is called AI. Neural networks that try to fold and identify proteins to find cures for diseases are called AI. I know he means shit like Gen AI and LLM chat bots, but maybe he should be a bit more specific and stop letting these shitty companies appropiate the term AI when so many people in the AI field work on things that aren’t even related to LLMs and gen AI.

I know how it works I live in the EU. I think the VAT exemption is possible when you buy digital goods. Ive bought plenty of things on websites where I can just enter my business VAT number and don’t pay the VAT
Edit: apparently the rule is that on b2b cross border sales between businesses in different EU countries there is no VAT charged.

This is what happens when you design games by quantifying everything into a number for a spreadsheet so a manager can read a report. Bet they did a playtest with their “target” audience aka non-gamers Sony wants to convince to buy a PlayStation for this game remember execs and shareholders only care about growing the player base. And some manager looked at the playstest numbers, noticed that many people couldn’t finish the section. And then ordered the team to make sure 90% of non-gamer playtesters can finish the game.

What’s interesting is that the North American studios are actually managed by Nintendo Japan and not NoA. There are interviews with ex Retro Studio employees where they talk about how producers from Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto come into the studio once in a while and start telling the Retro Studio staff what minute things they should change in the game they are working on.

on Devastated father says his 9-year-old son spent $118,000 on YouTube ad campaigns for his Minecraft channel using a company credit card — bill racked up in just three weeks was supposed to be one $20 in c/technology@lemmy.world · 17 Sep 2026
yeah the dad could have turned it into a teaching moment when the kid complained about views instead of throwing money at it. But making YouTube videos doesn’t automatically mean they will obsess about views it really depends on how the parents guides their kid, they can even hide the metrics from the kid. There are extensions that will hide the numbers from the page.
Also screen time should be limited anyway, if you limit how much time a kid can spend on the pc there is plenty of time left in a week to play outside and play with toys. It’s all about balance.

It really depends how smart the kid is. I don’t see the problem with a smart 9 year old uploading gameplay videos if it’s done right. As long as it’s supervised by the parent, the parent approves what the kid can upload and limit how many videos the kid can upload in a month. Comments can be turned off and they just use an internet nickname instead of their real name. Kid can even wear a mask to hide his face. Like it can be used as a learning tool to teach a kid how to use a pc and software, how to stay safe on the internet and what privacy means. Also how to plan and develop patience and discipline.
Of course I doubt these parents did any of that.

So the goal was $20 on an ad campaign? Might as well light a $20 bill on fire. That won’t move the needle at all. Also why does a Minecraft channel of a nine year old need a advertising campaign. A nine year old has all the time in the world to learn how to make compelling content and grow organically. The goal for a nine year old shouldn’t be high subscriber/viewer count. The dad could have turned it into a teaching moment when the kid complained about low viewership instead of throwing money at it no matter how small it was supposed to be

on Behold, "the whole story of Steam's economy in one picture": the top 1% of games earn 84.5% of estimated revenue, and most games barely make anything in c/games@lemmy.world · 20 Aug 2026
Good chance if your game didn’t do well on Steam that you didn’t make a good game that has high product-market fit in the first place and didn’t promote it properly. We are now in an era where indie devs have become millionaires from their $15 games. And I’m not just talking about Edmund McMillen and Johnathan Blow. Go back to the days of brick and mortar retail and that was nigh impossible when a small studio would earn pennies on the dollar for every sold unit.

on Behold, "the whole story of Steam's economy in one picture": the top 1% of games earn 84.5% of estimated revenue, and most games barely make anything in c/games@lemmy.world · 20 Aug 2026
That data also shows which games never got out of the “limited game status”. Around 16200 of games released in 2025 have the limited games status. Meaning these games were not making enough money or nothing at all and had not enough player engagement to unlock profile features.
If you look at the numbers of games that unlocked profile features the growth is much lower. Those are the numbers that matter anyway. 5000 games made actual money. And if we apply the Pareto principle than a thousand games made the vast majority of the new release revenue that year.
-
on Behold, "the whole story of Steam's economy in one picture": the top 1% of games earn 84.5% of estimated revenue, and most games barely make anything in c/games@lemmy.world · 19 Aug 2026
So what? The vast majority of games released on Steam are either hobby or student projects or just first time devs’ shitty pixel platformer. Many are low effort products, Steam will not even give those games “shelve space”. The algorithm will based on pre launch and launch metrics decide if it should push the game in front of customers in the recommendation sections of the store. If a game can’t even move the needle a bit after launch Steam will blackhole the game and basically make it invisible in the store unless a customer searches for it. Because even though it’s a virtual store, “shelve space” aka the recommendation section is still scarce.
The hidden gem games on Steam are rare. Every time I watch a dev’s postmortem on Youtube who talks about how little they sold I’m rarely surprised when I see the game.
Also Steam generates around $10+ Billion in revenue in a year. So the other games generate around $2 Billion. If that is generated by 2000 games that still averages to a million a game.

Their games are probably not easy to make and definitely not cheap if you hire these famous actors. Sure they are not s-tier level of actors but they are definitely not cheap. I bet many of those actors can ask a higher pay than the games industry’s favorite called Troy Baker.
Also the market for interactive movies probably isn’t mega huge either. Every interactive movie series they released was published by a different publisher. Doubt they were massive hits.
