It’s absurd that people ask it about anything and everything. I suck at coding and sometimes I suck at muddling through error message logs and it’s been immensely helpful for those things but that’s about it. I wouldn’t ever think to use them for anything else and it’s not worth burning down the planet for just that.

Some of us figured this out 20 years ago and never turned back. (I figured it out about the time that I realized I had more music in my mp3 collection than the college radio station I volunteered at in 2000.)

Too bad, it’s physical media, and people acting like “that’s not what I mean” contributes to this whole idea that data is ephemeral and like it lives in the air or something. No, it all lives on physical media, on drives, somewhere. Just because Netflix streamed it to you doesn’t mean that the movies files don’t live somewhere on physical media. Yeah, you don’t own it, it’s just streaming, but the physical media it exists on still exists, you just don’t have physical access to it (well, technically you do, it’s just little chunks instead of the full film that live on your PC just long enough for the film to play).
Sorry, this grinds my gears because I think not being clear about physical media including things like hard drives and USB thumbsticks is what contributes to a general lack of understanding of how any of this fucking works and why corporations were able to get away with how they abused “licensing” for so long.

The main thing I remember about Tim Cook was him making me realize how wealthy white cisgender gay men were hardly different from wealthy white cisgender straight men.
The whole article has always been really worth a read, seeing how a techbro tried to turn a classic magazine into a tech company somehow. Besides that though, these passages always stuck out to me, because it feels deeply like these wealthy men exploit their sexuality to justify avoiding critique of their actions outside of their sexuality.

Ioffe dates the abrupt change in mood to late summer, shortly after Foer’s birthday party—the period when, as many current and former T.N.R. employees noted, Eldridge’s expensive campaign to win a congressional seat started looking hopeless. “We all liked him; he seemed to like us,” she told me. “Everything was going great. Then, in the summer, something snapped, and he started talking to me about money and how we’re losing money and he’s tired of it. And then he became just downright contemptuous and hostile toward us.”
Hughes’s eroding relationship with the staff took on an ideological edge. On the morning that Tim Cook, the C.E.O. of Apple, announced that he was gay, MacGillis wrote a note to “the Plank,” T.N.R.’s internal e-mail listserv for writers and editors. “I see the celebration of his announcement, while entirely justifiable, as another sign of what’s happened to liberalism today, where rights/identity liberalism trumps economic liberalism,” he wrote. “This is, after all, a guy who embodies so much of what’s amiss in the age of inequality—pulling down $378 million in 2011 alone; Apple skirting taxes more brazenly than anyone else—yet those revelations have caused barely a stir.”
Hughes responded to the note six minutes later: “I think those are valid issues, although Apple has acted squarely within the law,” he wrote. “The law itself is fucked up. But I don’t think you can underestimate the difficulty of his decision or how tone deaf that argument would be today.”
The other editorial employees on the list were surprised by the response. It was an internal listserv for writers and editors, and the staffers didn’t realize that Hughes, who had relinquished his title as editor-in-chief when he installed Vidra, was on it. MacGillis responded by saying that he would hold off on writing, but added, “Just for the record, though, it is not so clear that Apple acted squarely within the law. The law’s a mess, but Apple pushed the bounds of it more than anyone.” He pasted text from a piece in the Times that questioned some of Apple’s practices.

It’s just a bit silly considering how these companies have been leveraging publicly available information and how automated most of their systems actually are. It’s part of why customer service at many of them (not Apple so much I guess) is absolutely abysmal and they basically do their best to try to avoid to having a human being in the customer service loop at all. Automating almost all software and removing the human element has literally been the name of the game for 20 years at least.
I mean the original Google ranking algorithm itself was partially made by checking the publicly available information (via web scraping) of how many times a site had been linked to from other sites. And to keep it accurate, they had to keep scraping constantly to keep updating the publicly available data for their own purposes. All of which was automated as well, by the way.

I wish this was talked about more. So much hay being made about this on the assumption that Google maintains their own database of locations instead of pulling from sources like GNIS like they actually do.
Fuck Google, but we don’t need to make shit up to hate them. In fact, making shit up makes us seem crazy and hurts our position. These companies do enough real evil shit, we don’t need to piss our time away on this non-issue.
Where’s this fucking energy for Google removing sideloading from Android, for example. I’ve seen way more mainstream news about this one item on a fucking map than I have about the loss of sideloading and the loss of actual ownership of the devices we purchase.

Some folks browse using Tor or other high-privacy respecting browsers, in which things like NoScript are a default.
Anyway, yeah, NoScript is still pretty popular and if I recall correctly you can whitelist and regex with it. I just use the same functionality to disable javascript that is in uBlock Origin, personally.

It’s interesting to me because while it’s mostly correct in each instance I tried it (phone, desktop) it actually gets some pertinent information incorrect.
For one, it only recognized the one monitor I had the browser open on, I have four monitors, so it got the resolution correct for a single monitor, but fails to capture the others, and so technically if I opened it on a different monitor with a different resolution (I had two that have different resolutions), that aspect of the fingerprint should change.
Secondly, when I went to this link from my cell phone it registered it as me typing the link in by hand while on PC it correctly registered where the link originated from (here on lemmy). Although I was using Jerboa on Android so perhaps it can’t read link origin from Jerboa (which is good).
Finally, it registers my Wayland session as X11, although I’m not sure if that’s a current limitation of browsers since Wayland isn’t the dominant compositor yet and perhaps hasn’t been added to browser user-agent info yet.
