Actually, a number of governments have contracted with private companies to handle certain policing duties like tolls or parking enforcement. Those companies then basically get all the rights of the government. I believe that it was NY City that was having a serious problem with parking enforcement stealing (impounding vehicles) and putting tickets on legally parked vehicles (about 10yrs ago) just to bump their profits.

Blue MAGA… I am going to be honest, I like this a lot better than the pretending to be anarchists or libertarian of past voting seasons. It is still painfully oblivious as to why people vote Democrat, but it feels like you guys put in some thought this time… Stupid thoughts, but still there was an attempt, and I can appreciate that.

There’s no way that thing self drove itself there. How would it have recharged multiple times?
Although I do believe that it’s possible that their shitty software could get confused about where it is supposed to go and try to make a cross country trip.I can’t stop smiling at the idea of someone trying to hail a cyber cab in Paris Tx and then numerous cyber cabs go flying off docks on the eastern side of the country. Every few minutes another cab, each one going slightly faster than the last.

Repeated exposure and normalization are basic psychology that would be introduced in even the most rudimentary Intro to Psychiatry text book. They are basic tools used by therapists, advertisers, politicians, ect, ect to do everything from good to bad like convince you that spiders aren’t horrifying, black people = white people, being gay is ok, ADHD doesn’t mean you’re defective, that you just should buy certain items because they match the lifestyle you think you deserve, and more recently that being a racist pedo rapist is acceptable as President.
You can claim that you are fighting for gay rights by tossing all the children to the pedos, but that is bullshit. If you are actually gay, then you are purposely equating homosexuality with pedophilia. The only way your argument wouldn’t automatically make you one of the dumbest people on the planet is if you were purposely throwing on the “gay” mantle to reinforce the association of “gay” with “pedo” (like some political huckster), or if you were a pedo trying to deflect people from calling you out as the pedo that obviously are.

Independent bookstores all across Europe are seeing a trend like this, where they receive random, relatively large orders that are shipped to local addresses. While orders like these still come through in the digital age, especially from institutional buyers looking to fill out new libraries, they say that most “legitimate” orders often come with coordination and negotiation, not just a straight purchase order.

They are literally searching for rare books, paying premium costs for them, then cutting off their spines because it is faster to scan them that way.
Not only do they not need to destroy the books to scan them, but Google already did this 2 decades ago, and they did it non-destructively. -

Look up Google and Project Ocean. Google already did this 2 decades ago. They even went to great lengths to build machines that would very slowly and gently turn pages and non-destructively scan books.
They already have a digital library of 25 million books just sitting there, ready to be instantly and non-destructively copied infinitely. -

Textbooks are not “rare”, nor are they something that universities and libraries would be price sensitive about. The books are being bought from booksellers who make a living buying and selling rare books. So, while I doubt that they are all going to “masterpieces”, they are going to be books valuable enough to support an industry of people and expensive enough that universities and libraries would be price sensitive about them.

This is something I kept pointing out to management at my last company, but they were always so hellbent on putting everything in the cloud. Then construction across the street cut some fiber or something going to our building. When I told management that we had no Internet and I was sending everyone home, they lost their shit. I mollified them a bit by pointing out that at least some people would be able to work from home. I then waited until the meeting the next morning to point out that only 1 QA/support person and 1 dev had laptops (because of course management didn’t see any reason to spend the extra money for laptops over desktops). It was also nice to be able to make the CEO and VP to drive all the way home and back to get their wireless data pucks they used as their personal Internet connections.
My overwhelming joy at all the petty little ways I was able to rub their bad decisions in their faces was a big part of what made me actually start hunting for a new job rather than just thinking about it. -
