• You are correct. It’s like expecting car salesmen to be able to understand how to do brain surgery.

  Most politicians are failed lawyers. And if they are too incompetent or corrupt to be representing people or entities in court, they sure are hell shouldn’t be making calls about anything in society or in the political realm. And that obviously includes technology.

  Remember when late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens described (with great confidence) that the Internet “is like a series of tubes”? Classic example of their wider incompetence right there.

• Me too with my TV. But reading more detailed comments here, it’s more complicated and nuanced than just “if it has a direct Internet connection it will get up to shenanigans”. Sounds like this device is using HDMI to manipulate Windows (install drivers etc) and piggyback off the Windows machine’s Internet connection. But I’m assuming if it’s not plugged into a Windows PC directly it might not be a problem.

• I’m fucking done with Google Maps and their brown-nosing bullshit. Disabled it (can’t uninstall easily, otherwise I would). MapQuest from now on (or one of the other alternatives that has a spine).

  Now to find a good alternative to Gmail (and go through that migration hassle). I’ve tried Proton Mail in the past. It was okay, but didn’t blow me away.

  Also, how can you stay “present in the moment with the people you care about” when you have alerts and other UI overlay elements flashing and moving in your direct or peripheral vision? That would be a massive distraction to me.
