this sounds like everyone i meet. except… they are not boomers. they are millennials.
and when i say i like doing stuff in real life they get very confused and often angry.
and if i say ‘lets go to a movie’ they say ‘it’s too long and hard to pay attention’. and if i say I like to read, they tell me I’m weird and pretentious.
and they can’t hold a conversation on topic for more than like a minute or two. and then when I don’t want to interact with them anymore… they tell me I’m the problem.
I used to actually kinda like talking to my co-workers and people my age… now I just hate it. Because everyone’s brain is destroyed, everything is instant gratification echo chamber nonsense or anxiety-fueled social comparison.
and when I go on social media… I am just repulsed confused how anyone could enjoy the endless slop it serves up, and often turned off by people to the point I just block them. I’d rather remain ignorant than look at their try hard posts about how happy and wonderful their life is… because when you talk to them IRL they are anxious and depressed.

what is ‘success’? starting salary, or mid-career, or late career?
regardless of what you major in, or your job skills you have, the biggest predictor of success is your parents wealth. no major, no college, nothing can overcome that element.
the poor kids with STEM degrees are the ones slinging coffee, not the rich ones. because they don’t have the social connections, and the unpaid internships and the social skills to get them hired by all the hiring managers who are upper middle class people whose primary concern in hiring is social fit above all else. brogrammers only hire other brogrammers. woke brogrammers, only higher other woke brogrammers, etc. and poor college kids have no idea what any of that shit is because they are worrying about their food budget and their summer job slinging ice cream will be enough to cover next semesters books and fees.
frankly, I’ve never met a STEM person who wasn’t from a upper middle class family, though a lot of them tell you they are ‘poor’ because their dad own drove a Lexus, not a Mercedes. Everyone I knew who went into STEM was way richer than my family. and they are totally convinced though their grew up in rags because they shopped at Abercomrbie and not Vineyard vines. And if I say ‘hey well i grew up shopping at TJ Maxx’ they tell me to go fuck myself for being a poor piece of shit.

Not everyone can move infinitely upwards.
you realize that, right? only a select few people get those positions.
most people do not have the skills, talent, or drive to attain these things, nor should they. most people will cap out in their career in their 30s/40s. and most people will never even be middle management.
because that’s how numbers work. for each project there is one lead, and several people below them.

What we need is leftists who… do something. Turns out… that’s very very appealing to voters. Just look at Mandami in NYC… guy articulated a clear vision and is executing it… and the voters adore him. But a lot of leftists HATE him because they… are so unable to get their heads out of their own asses and put form a legitimate and achievable platform of reform.
The problem with most modern left-wing parties is they just… want to get into power and do nothing with the power.

It depends on where you live.
If you live in bumnfuck ohio, are you seeing this? No.
But if you live in a progressive city… it is shoved down your throat. And it wasn’t 10 years ago. Never once in 2010s was I ever accused of bigotry or lectured about pronouns, and pride month was pretty chill. Now… it’s pride year, every other person agonzied about pronouns, and I get accused of being a trans-hating bigot like every other week.
There is a huge social change going on, mostly fueled by social media, that turns everything into a battleground. I can’t be like ‘lgbt cool, that’s nice’ anymore. I have ot be foaming at the mouth pro lgbt and anti-conservative, OR ELSE I’m anti-lgbt.
It’s the extremism. You only see it on the conservative side, but it every much exists on the progressive side. Especially in progressive communities full of rabid angry people who incessantly need to virtue signal over social issues like this.
Thing is, my entire life I have been pro lgbt, and in my younger years I actively worked with gay and trans folks without issue (2000s, 2010s). The past few years whomever, people actively seek out conflict with me, in real life, over lgbt stuff. It’s insane. If you don’t think it’s beeing ‘shoved down your throat’ in a hostile manner… well you must not live in a progressive city, or you are very lucky, or you’re just willfully blind to it.
I’ve even sadly had a few friends I have had lost because they have been so rabid and hateful and miserable, in the name of leftist virtue signalling bullshit. But I guess you maybe don’t think anyone who is pro-lgbt can be miserable and hateful and awful?
I grew up in a conservative place being told being gay was awful, and was constantly accused of being gay and I had to prove I was straight. Now I live in a progressive place and I’m being told being straight and a guy is awful constantly and I have to prove I’m not anti-trans. It’s fucking miserable and I don’t want to interact with either kind of person anymore… and there are VERY few spaces I can just exist without this topic coming up as some kind of shit test being shoved in my face. Because so many folks are witch-hunting and need to know if you are ‘ON MY SIDE’. Like if I meet a new person and they aren’t shoving their politics down my throat and seeking explicit agreement on every issue… I’m shocked and surprised. because where I live… that’s kind of the default for a lot of people living here. I can’t go to the dog park without people going on about lgbt or other social issues. I’ve literally been asked about my dogs pronouns… that’s how fucking insane some folks are where I live… but a bunch of them have dog psychologists who they are paying $1000s of dollars to tell them their dog is trans because it makes them feel special.
anyways, i hope you live in a more chill city. but where i live folks are very much insane and have taken lgbt+ stuff to absurd extremes, especially the past few years. Nobody asked me my dogs pronouns in 2018.

yeah, because that’s where the kids are and that’s what they are learning.
you can mock it all you want, but it’s their primary source of information about the world.
i find it hilarious how the media ‘doesn’t get it’ why young people are this way… well because the media is full of old farts who they don’t listen to. they also think anyone over 30 is old. i have four teeange nephews… everything is tiktok and discord. there is nothing else. even instagram is considered weird and old to them.
and they are anti-progressive and pro traditionalism. they think lgbt people are annoying and whiny and get unfair advantages in life, and they are very angry that everyone blames them for societies problems because they are boys, when all they are trying to do is figure shit out, and nobody is helping them. and when they ask for help, they get mocked and told to go fuck themselves because they are ‘privileged white boys’.
why would not want to go back to a society where they were treated better? nobody has any empathy for them or their problems and they know it.
Yes, the retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women. I think historically the explanation was that women spend more time taking care of children or something. Today it’s hard to justify so younger men are often complaining about it.

the left basically floats around being ‘we’re not as bad as the other guys but don’t expect much from us’ and only seems to succeed where the right fucks up. They don’t have a postie policy agenda and they haven’t had one since the 1980s. and that’s not how you get votes, build coalitions, or govern effectively.
and it’s systematic across many western countries.

probably because it’s pushed on them, and teenagers resent what is pushed on them.
when i was a teenager being gay was horrible and bad, and if you didn’t think that you were rebellious and cool.
now being gay is celebrated and lauded, and teens probably feel rebellious and cool by being against it.
it’s the same with drug use. drug use has dropped a lot among teens because it’s been normalized by adults and it’s not cool.
further there is a huge uptick in gender extremism for both men and women, fueled by social media influencers and the kids love that shit. you have teenage boys thinking they need to be body builders and teenage girls thinking they need butt lifts.

yes, but it’s systematically undervalued because stupid people don’t understand how powerful soft skills are and think all that matter is hard skills.
but statistically most liberal art grads do very well later in life, even if they don’t make as much starting out.

funny thing is everyone i know who… made a legit effort in college and in life in general has done well. it’s the people who… just kind of showed up and expected to be rewarded that struggled and continue to struggle economically.
and that is regardless of economic conditions. it is the economy but it’s also personal habits and expectations. my own brother has been unemployed for over 5 years now, and what he won’t accept that is it’s his attitude that makes him unemployable. he’s so prideful he would rather be unemployed than ‘take a job that is below me’. had multiple offers are smaller companies for less pay and just refused to take them.
his industry has been shrinking for over a decade too, and he also refused to try another industry…

I have four nephews.
95% of their playtime is like 4 games. Minecraft, Madden, Fortnite, and whatever the most popular multiplaying FPS is (this changes every year or two). Throw in a few more uber popular ones like Mario Kart, Terraria, Stardew, Elden Ring etc. and that’s the other 5%
They rarely play anything else and they think I’m brain damaged because all my games… are not any of those. My games are ‘weird’ to them. If it hasn’t sold 10-20million copies, they don’t know what it is.

The thing that is missing is older games were developed by small teams of like a dozen or two people, not 100s of people across multiple companies, as much of the work is outsourced. which is how pretty much every modern game is done.

yeah, but fedi has lots of baked in issues, especially a virulent userbase that is glad to use bots and other tools to turn fedi not into a liberal space but an illiberal space full of extremist and exclusionary politics. they are bringing over their social media echo chamber stuff and just try to re-create it here rather than on commercial platforms where they were kicked out of or left due to censoring of their extremism.
the issue is a large section of the userbase here isn’t like 2000s tech libertarians, that founded most of the internet and the 'net culture we are nostalgic for… a lot of that mentality is essentially extinct or viewed as toxic now. recall that reddit never had a block feature until 2016… 11 years after it started and only when Donald Trump was already in office.
hell most of the devs who are building the fedi are different flavors of political extremists themselves… and there are already many scandals/debates over how many fedi projects have baked in controls or default settings to censor and block things.
more than the internet, the world itself and it’s viewpoints are fundamentally different from where they were 20-30 years ago. we had much more of a monoculture and a narrower overton window back then. the type of stuff that goes on cable news programs these days would have been un-airable 20 years ago.
even in using reddit from 2010-2015, there was a massive tonal shift as the site grew, and it became massively more miserable as the politics flooded the site and every other subreddit became people fighting over R vs D.

The internet was nice when it was a non-profit space for nerds, but now it’s the main way to peddle money and influence in the world so it’s nasty and corrupt.
the ideas of the early net were merely ideals and were never going to last once money got involved. very few ideals ever last once money and power become the currency.

Yeah, that’s the point though, the schools/training was massively underenrolled.
if the failure rate is 50%, you need twice as many candidates to fill the jobs. more so if it’s higher.
we also desperately need more medical staff, but nobody is scrambling to hire young men for nursing and other non-doctor medical roles. they are still predominantly marketed for women

because bluesky wants to be a walled garden. they still operate under the same metrics as every other social media platform because their value comes from keeping you on the platform as much and as long as possible and tracking everything you do on it. they can’t do that if you aren’t logged in and views from external users aren’t as valuable as logged in users.
mastodon doesn’t care about any of that. it works off the principles of the open internet.

I’ve been left-wing I feel like for 25 years, but the entire time I left the politics was moving away from me. As much as the right parodies the left as being elitist and out of touch and delusional… it’s like the left now actively embraces that vision of themselves and actively pursues it.
