• Someone close to me is an accountant, and is facing layoffs, downsizing, and much-longer working hours, as management pushes remaining staff to use more and more AI in accounting analysis and reporting. Trying to get one accountant to accomplish what used to take several.

• Meta’s content moderation system stepped in … on the grounds that it violated a rule on promoting “social topics…”

  Advertising is social by its very nature and I can’t imagine any sort of serious ad that wouldn’t fall under that “social” umbrella.

  An ad that suggested “Stay home and do nothing” would still be a case of one human being reaching out to another human being.

  I know my reasoning isn’t going to make Meta crumble, but I do want to make it clear how dishonest and craven this is.

• I think the cyclical, self-destrctive nature of the grifts he discusses really is different from any trends I saw on the internet in the 90s. He’s not suggesting that the online world of the 90s was all rainbows and unicorns, but that much internet “culture” today works on the basis of hurting the very people perpetuating it, trapping them within it. That may not be entirely new in human experience, but it’s more visible, more spread-able, more mainstream, more large-scale than ever.

• The destruction of the book is done to mitigate some copyright concerns.

  Can you explain? The First Sale doctrine means its OK to sell books after you’re done with them. I would think it would be the scanning itself that could be a copyright problem, not the disposition of the physical book after.

  I thought the real reason, the main reason, was, as the article says, “Destroying books is cheaper.”

  I agree that the concern over the destruction of physical books, and what impact that will have on their availability, is probably exaggerated. Heck, the actual importance of old books to the AI companies may be exaggerated, that seems to be their hype style.

  These days there are ALPR cameras everywhere, and it’s very hard to imagine John Q. Public is going to have a hot tip before our dystopian AI panopticon does. It has seemed obvious to me that, whatever their intention, the Amber alerts primarily function as copaganda: Persuading us that we live in a dangerous, unpredictable world, and that only the police can save us. • This was my attitude when I was younger. But as my financial arrangements have gotten more complicated, more intertwined with those of other people, as I’ve accumulated weird experiences straightening out banking problems, I can see that while there is wisdom in the rule, its never going to be enough.
