• I’m conflicted. I’m anti-AI due to distrust in capitalism and our pseudo-democratic plutocracies, the profit motive to replace the human workforce, the reckless criminal-incompetence of its implementation, and apparent stupidity of the average hairless primate in understanding that you can never trust a correlation engine… but it’s just a tool, and I’ve also found it incredibly useful in my limited and controlled usage; getting it to write small functions or blocks of code, then amending and composing them myself.

  How do we determine what is “heavily written by ai”, and all the obvious slop factory bullshit, without banning strong projects who are just leveraging it for legitimate dev work; as a glorified autocomplete, test autofill, etc but still read and validate every line of code?

  Like most people, I’m finding it increasingly difficult to find trustworthy projects amongst the see of amateur slop, but I think banning it out-right would likely result in many false positives, and ultimately be counter-productive.

  As much as I don’t want to depend on metrics, I think a better approach would be to define a bunch of heuristics based on historically-competent projects. Things like defining an upper limit based on LoC vs commit time and number of devs, project age, etc. Ultimately I feel the industry should do what cybersecurity should be doing; moving to some sort of cryptograhically-verified social trust model where engineers/professionals have to build trust in the real world, and take turns in “vouching” for projects and code releases.

• In general, there is an entirely separate rule of law for businesses. That’s why regulations were created. Instead of holding a corporations decision makers and investors criminally liable with existing laws like fraud (“false advertising”, etc), or manslaughter (poisoning and killing their workers, customers, or environment), they created an entirely separate rule of law mostly based on laughable punitive damages with limits that don’t significantly impact investors. The entire system is geared to suppress, oppress, and exploit workers for profit.

• Capitalism tends to reward the most sociopathic and psychopathic of behaviors with wealth and power under the guise of “it’s just business”, because morals/ethics are expensive, and greed/crime/corruption pays. Anything that isn’t explicitly illegal is fair game, so the criminals and corrupt prosper (and even when they do extremely illegal shit, they use their wealth to corrupt their way out of justice).

  Those who succeed hoard their wealth. Wealth = power, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. As their wealth/power grows, they grow more and more corrupt and sociopathic/psychopathic. They use their wealth to corrupt, coerce, and exploit everyone and everything (like the legislative, executive, and judiciary), until they own the entire political class, legal and justice system; grooming each generation from the big club of wealthy private social circles and schools.

  It’s a vicious self-selecting cycle that preferences the most greedy and selfish, and they collude to keep moral and ethical people out of the club. They also pass on their corruption, greed and sociopathy/psychopathy to their children; both psychologically and via generational wealth/power.

  Basically, “liberal democracy” is an oxymoron, because under capitalism 99% of businesses and corporations are their own oligarchy/plutocracy, competing with other oligarchy/plutocracy in a greediest psychopath takes all game. It’s actually rather psychotic to believe that democracy can coexist with a system that is 99% oligarchy/plutocracy, but the sociopaths and psychopaths benefit from making you hate your fellow rats who are trading their labor to survive the same rat race, the same as you, than the people so wealthy they can rape children on their private island with impunity; so wealthy/powerful that they own our intelligence agencies, and their right to rape children is protected by the state.

• Statistical models are not technically algorithms; they are a heuristic which “approximates” a solution probabilistically. They use algorithms to function and operate on data (like everything a computer does) but they are not algorithms themselves.

  The main thing they have to do is clearly define that results derived by statistical modeling are opt-in, set limits on what personal data can be used to present content, and ensure there are significant penalties for crippling the experience of everyone who hasn’t opted-in, which all are guaranteed to do to force users to opt-in.

  They should define a bare minimum baseline of data points that should be made available to users to control the content they want to see using non-statistical algorithms (e.g. time, location, content type or popularity, friends/subs/followed only or ones they recommend themselves, etc). They should also define that opt-in/out (enabling and disabling statistical model results) should be a part of the main filter UI that uses the aforementioned data points; a simple toggle at the top of their page/feed, permanently visible and near-instantly applicable; otherwise they’re guaranteed to hide it away and make opt-in/out a major friction point.

  Basically you need to treat them like they’re sociopathic criminals who will never act in good faith voluntarily, because all multinationals and large corporations are lead by criminally corrupt sociopaths.

• The problem with that is the vast majority have no idea how pervasive and oppressive surveillance capitalism truly is. If they knew that the data from their various devices and services was being aggregated by thousands of data brokers, and could be used by employers to pay them lower wages, or businesses to charge them higher prices, or insurance to deny them healthcare, or cyber criminals to scam them, most would be genuinely shocked that most of this shit is “legal”.

  The other problem is that there’s no way to opt out of techno fascism. They are free to stalk you for profit and there’s nothing you can do about it. Even if you live in a faraday cage they’ll still amass data on you. It’s hard to take a moral stance when you think they’re gonna fuck you every which way regardless.

• The entire term of “Artificial Intelligence” is basically a misnomer, false advertising, even fraud. It is merely an advanced “correlation engine”. It is the output of an algorithm, and has no concept of what anything is. It does not “know” anything. It is the result of the 1’s and 0’s humans input as training data or context, or give it access to query via the internet etc; including all the misinformation, disinformation, errors, and bias. There is no intelligence or critical thought. It does not get the difference between causation and correlation. It just responds based on some internal probability matrix or distribution; correlations compressed into weights/coefficients from all of the training data.

  The only thing that makes its responses appear stochastic is the randomization seed and context, or other techniques harnesses use to dogfood its own responses into itself. Without those, you can have the exact same conversation, byte for byte, and the responses become evidently deterministic and “dumb”.

  All of the “novel” solutions I’ve seen to date are not actually novel at all, having merely applied some technique documented in a far removed discipline, entirely explained by the properties of a gargantuan working memory and no off switch. We don’t call a computer “super intelligent” because it can process trillions of mathematical calculations a second. Those are merely properties we explicitly engineered into the machine.

• Ever since I realised that corporations are allowed to engage in fraud, and a litany of other crimes, without consequence I started archiving things directly using a combination of the SingleFile browser extension and full page screenshots, placing them in a web-archive folder.

  Every time I purchase anything I save the product listing and order page, along with all associated info, naming all files based on the date of the purchase; the larger the purchase the more I’ll save (product page, warranty, user manuals, etc), and sometimes even a note.md file to document specifics (filter changes, spare parts and part numbers, etc).

  I also use this method to snapshot various account pages or interactions like web chat; pretty much anything that future me could possibly need to reference.

  It comes in handy extremely often.

• My entire comment history is filled with criticism of capitalism, and I have a bunch of issues with proton, but this is just sad and not something I care about.

  They are testing what price point is most attractive for NEW customers on a 24 month intro offer. Both of these offers revert to the standard price after 24 months.

  Windscribe, as a 5 eyes based VPN, is not trustworthy, and posting “gotchas” like this makes them even more suspect. Proton is one of the only providers that offer a permanently free VPN. Windscribe has no free option.

  Personally, I think a moral company would offer permanent discounts to long term customers, but there isn’t a single company on earth I’m aware of that actually does that.
