This should be part of the diagnostic criteria. I figured out when I was a kid - if I feel like I’m putting in all the effort for the friendship and the other person isn’t trying, then it’s not worth it. Chances are, I’m just annoying them and they’re trying to be polite. In reality, either we click immediately or we don’t click at all, and the difference is unmistakable. Finding a like-mind feels like a chemical reaction going off.
Or another way to put it, it’s like how two waves meeting can either amplify each other or completely cancel each other out. If we’re the same wavelength, we’ll both be riding high. If we’re too different, everything just kind of peters out.

Honestly, I think neurotypicals put too much emphasis on facial expression. I can read facial expressions fine most of the time, yeah, but rarely does someone accurately read my facial expression.
People either assume I’m upset (because I’m not actively attempting to emote, such as when I’m thinking about something), or assume I’m happy (because I’m masking - in which case I may look happy, but that doesn’t mean I feel happy.)
Considering that “resting bitch face” has become a known cultural phenomenon, I’m tempted to argue that neurotypicals have as much trouble reading faces as they claim we do. The difference is, if they’re wrong they either don’t recognize it, or double-down because obvs you’re lying for some reason. (You’re autistic after all, they clearly know how you’re feeling better than you do. /s)

As a visual-thinking, but non-mathy, person, this would be a lot easier to understand if someone plotted the graph. Right now, this is just a bunch of words and numbers without much meaning to me, but it sounds like the kind of thing that someone who “gets it” could easily “translate” for the rest of us with a visual.
Though I might be extra confused because they brought up gay and straight when the topic was originally about gender. Is it meant to plot one’s own gender, or the gender of whomever they’re attracted to? Or are we supposed to make two graphs, one of each, and there’s some math-term I’m too math-ignorant about being used to compare the two?
Or does the post not make full sense, but it sounds funny and that’s why people like it?

I know this comment sounds kind of dry and maybe off-tone, but I’m rattled from a fall I just had, on top of battling a cold for the past couple days. So my autistic brain is running on safe mode right now and I can’t access the “polite and charming” program I prefer to run when writing comments.

This continues even when you learn different scripts. I know the Katakana on an English product is probably going to sound like an English word spoken in a Japanese accent, but I still feel compelled to sound out “aisu kuriimu” (or whatever the written word may be) whenever I see it.
It’s not as automatic as reading in English is, but the compulsion to focus on the written words still exists.

Depends. How are you eating? Are you meticulously separating your food and eating it in a particular order? Do you break apart your tator tots into tiny bits, or do you pull the chocolate chips out of your muffins to eat them separately? Maybe you eat all the green veggie straws, then all the yellows, then all the orange ones, never deviating from that pattern?
It’s fascinating looking around the lunch room in a school for autistic children.

I am an “always hot” kind of person, and I have similar reservations about this technique.
I sleep under a flat sheet, usually with a leg poking out. I have a second, cotton blanket that I can layer on top of my torso if the flat sheet isn’t enough, but to cover my entire body with the cotton blanket would be too hot most nights. Unless it’s the dead of winter or I have a fever, I need to be able to free a leg out from under the blankets at any given time. Being wrapped up like in this image would make falling/staying asleep even harder.
It’s also why I don’t make my bed. Tucking the blanket under the sides of the bed just means having to undo it all when it’s time to sleep. Besides, it doesn’t make much sense to “make a bed” when you don’t use a comforter.

The timid conundrum: anyone else ever say “excuse me” in such a small voice that nobody hears you? Then you end up looking like a jerk who didn’t say anything as you squeeze through people, yet the very idea of raising your voice to be heard feels even more rude somehow?
Trauma is a hell of a drug…

To my understanding, the points at the top represent the wings that the god Mercury/Hermes had on his helmet.
The planet Mercury, being the closest to the sun, appeared to travel quickly as it went about its orbit (only taking roughly 88 days to go around the sun once.) As such, the ancients associated it with a god known for traveling swiftly - Mercury (known as Hermes in Greek mythology), the messenger of the gods.
I’m pretty sure this is how so many members of my family have made it to adulthood without getting diagnosed earlier (I mean, aside from diagnosis becoming more common/accepted these days.)
Like, you mean to tell me there are siblings who don’t send each other pictures of interesting road signs they come across? Pfft, what a weird family that must be. Next you’ll be telling me that most families don’t ask each other impromptu trivia questions about obscure topics that they happen to share interests in.
This is our normal. Always has been. It’s the rest of the world that’s weird.
