Still completely overlooking the abuser… Just apparently using this as an excuse to attack people (in this case, Elon, and now me)…

Again, even if the car couldn’t be controlled by mobile, similar things would have happened still… Again, I’ve been threatened at least 3x in real life (one was a serious threat. The guy ended up getting decapitated actually, which indicates the kind of person they were). The most they could do was limit speed, and its clear that Valet mode wasn’t designed for that purpose. They can’t press the accelerator, move the wheel, etc (as you keep implying)

And yes, those same people always needed to assert authority in every statement too…

OH no, he can control the heater remotely. She might freeze to death!!!

He can’t control her speed. Just limit it, brakes still work fully. Acceleration is just limited. You keep wording things in a way that suggest you didn’t even read the article.

My aftermarket alarm on my jeep can do a lot of this stuff including STOP the engine. My computer lets me control it remotely too

Sounds like you’re blaming Elon, not the person doing the abuse. Technically, the driver ONLY had access. The problem was, she was conned by the abuser into giving him access too.

You’re trying to phrase it in a way that is bullshit honestly… Like handing over your computer credentials and then whining “only the user should be able to access the system”. Yeah, the user did… Until you gave them access.

The level of the control they had remotely was limited. They weren’t turning the wheel. And even the claim that slowing the car down to lower speeds is causing safety issues honestly, is a fairly sketchy one…

Yes, I hate Elon too… But, sounds like you’re more upset at Elon, than the abusive asshole… This is ENTIRELY the abusive assholes fault.

You don’t need to buy a car with connectivity, but that won’t stop abusive shitheads from messing with your car (i’ve been threatened 3-4x seriously in my life). Trust me

I hate Elon, but, this is quite clearly the fault of the abusive partner, NOT Tesla, which is why the partner is in deep shit

It’s not like it was open access for everyone in public to change those settings, and those features clearly weren’t intended for that purpose. A good example is a baseball bat. Yes it could be used for crime, but its not the primary purpose… If they sold them with nails at the end though, the manufacturer would clearly be partially to blame.

If he wasn’t controlling her car, it likely would have been different abuse (gps tracker on the car). Unfortunately, we have more s**theads here in Australia than most other countries. And, most of the time it’s thanks to Murdoch media and facebook making people feel unhappy, play victim, etc.

Hopefully, the new laws against facebook get introduced, and it stops a lot of the ragebait that have made people like this worse.

And yes, I dated someone whose ex-partner basically stalked her, until we realised. We can’t blame apple because he used “find my phone”

Yeah, I bought a Mac Studio, Mac Pro, and used to own a powerMac G5. The worst part was that Apple sucks at GPU’s and always did. I dumped my Mac Pro when I realised the GPU was totally crap compared to PC half the price on the market, and there was no official way to update it, and keep using MacOS. I could switch GPU, but, Mac OS wouldn’t have the drivers.

It was super embarressing. Despite only needing to support a handful of GPU’s, Apple still didn’t offer a long timeframe of support for that system. The only solution was buy a whole new computer

Apple only updates their computers for about 6-7 years. After that, no new MacOS updates. Architecture changes are unrelated, but, yes, they did that twice in the past 20 years (Microsoft and Linux both support mostly the same architectures they always did, with the itanium builds, or other funky architectures that never succeeded).

In contrast, even Microsoft only JUST broke backwards compatibility with old processors (and, have only done it once)… And I’m not even sure that’s a hard cut off (as, I’ve seen older CPU’s than 7XXX series with windows 11 being sold)

Apple profits on both the OS, and the hardware directly. They’re in full control, and it isn’t as though they need to support a RANGE of hardware. And they charge a premium for this hardware.

As BJW mentioned, even worse, developers hoping to develop for Mac OS or IOS NEED to buy an Apple computer to ensure compatibility with the latest builds. Microsoft doesn’t force you to buy a Surface if you want to develop for them. On Linux, you don’t need a specific system either

In case people haven’t worked it out, Apple’s business model has always been screw-everyone, to the point that they even sent out letters to other resellers customers (at a unrelated Apple reseller) to buy Applecare…

In fact, I would be surprised if they also weren’t using the App store metrics to identify ideas/apps they should copy and target too (or, companies to buy).

If you spent money for that lovely premium computer hardware they sell, you only get updates for a few years, if you bought it at the end of the cycle.

If you remember Antennagate, Steve bent himself out of place to pretend their problem was the same as their competitors.

Multi-Touch phone. “Oh we patented that”. They’d hate for their customers to mistake them for inventing multitouch. All those customers who came into our reseller who heard “macs can’t get viruses” were just their own stupidity. Not misleading advertising

Sorry. But, imho, you’re wrong :)
1. Have you ever written a proper SysV script? It was a nightmare… The last Systemd unit I wrote was 4 lines I think
2. SysV had lots of race conditions and was a nightmare to troubleshoot
3. The old scripts were entirely distribution specific.
4. The old Init scripts depended on all kinds of hacks to work properly.
5. Dependencies in init scripts? not really a thing… You basically just fudged everything all together in a specific order and hope they loaded in sequence as required… In SystemD, they build dependency handling in (and, built in a lot of prerequisites to handle it)
6. Because Init scripts don’t do real dependency management, they also ain’t fast.
Init scripts are the equivalent of using a perl script as the kernel programming language. They were crappy, hard to read, hard to modify, hard to maintain.

The biggest objection against Systemd as it stands today was because Linus had an opinion about it (but, admits something like it is needed), and the assumption that redhat == bad, so therefore Systemd == bad

It’s one of those silly arguments that is repeated, by the “OMG, but wayland doesn’t have network transparency” crowd. Everyone else just gets shit done (like the pulseaudio crowd) which is why this stuff was heavily adopted

People keep mentioning this. It’s not actually a problem

It’s not even a good philosophy anymore (although, not actually even sure where this statement originated). The Linux kernel does more than 1 thing. So does Gnome, KDE, etc.

The old init scripts did “one thing”, but, because they did too little, the scripts were difficult to write, there were issues like race conditions, etc.

Anyone who ever wrote a SysV script would tell you what an absolute nightmare they were… Whereas, SystemD, even more complex ones which depend on a lot of factors are now easy (and only a few lines).

Every dumbfuck who never finished school and has no training is delighted it can make them seem smart.

I’ve literally had arguments with customers who have told me the “facts” based on my own code logs and explain API’s to me and what they do, in products I’ve been maintaining for years.

I was going to mention that, but apparently, you’re only allowed to advertise now if you have a prototype and fairly late. So, not sure it still generally applies.

The bigger issue, is that it would be probably easier to detect these patterns, and immediately flag them.

Of course you love AI. We’ve all seen your AI slop posts on c/linuxsucks. And, a lot of it is old information and wrong, which, you don’t even verify (like about Discord).

That’s also why you need to ban any comments in your community, because even you know it’s slop

I’m not sure we want a lot of the trolls or bots here… Fortunately, I feel like they’d go to instances which lemmy world is de-federated from fortunately though.

It’s fairly obvious in a lot of the local subreddits that there are a huge amount of lobbyists (same as facebook). Like the gun/pro-vaping people posting at 2AM really stand out in them
