It really does look more broken the more I look. I began to think that it would sort odd and even lists in opposite orders, since half the time it’s comparing pairs the opposite way around.

This pic is an acoustic coupler, which played sounds and listened to them from the handset. Modems would connect directly to the phone circuit, bypassing actual sound waves (although they did still have a little speaker so the you could hear what they received).
Whatever happened to fractal image compression, which compressed an image by finding parts similar to larger regions of the picture, so that is could reconstruct the image from itself.
