• I mean I can sorta understand some convenience functions but it oughta have some default setting it falls back to. Especially temperature settings.

  I do have a Samsung fridge but nothing that fancy. I mean I tried to get it to trigger an Alexa routine to play a message when the door opened but that didn’t work. Alexa saying “Close the door fatty, you’re not really hungry” could have been motivational.

• I’m guessing within Microsoft, it’s probably was a pain in the ass to get whatever department in MS that controls the microsoft.com domain to set up a subdomain.

  I’ve had to deal with shit like this personally so I guarantee that was at least one reason. The departments that control the domain treat it like some sort of power trip and make it hard to do the smart thing.

• I hear you but honestly when I have time to game I just want to sit down and game. I used to have time to do that. Go find the pirated versions, or the cracks, fiddle with it for hours and then finally play. Not to mention the time and money to buy, build, and configure a decent gaming system. I don’t really care for the massively online versions because in my opinion online gaming is just so competitive and toxic so that’s not really an issue for me. All of this combined is why I typically had veered toward consoles. It was just easier. But since I gave up on Xbox and now Sony is pulling this shit, I’m seriously concerned about what options are even available at all, let alone unenshittified versions.

• Or Dell Precision Workstations. The SSDs would likely be SAS but maybe U2 or E1.S. Those would be harder to use but not impossible. I saw a QNAP that takes E1.S just yesterday. Of course the 5 bay without drives was $1k.

• As I said above, most of this stuff is not useful to home labbers.

  I mean if you could get something like a H200 NVL (this is the normal pcie version) that would be useful. But most of these datacenters are using something like an H200 SXM5 module which only works in HGX/DGX GPU baseboards.

• You really don’t want it. At least most of it. I get discarded stuff from work quite frequently and 95% of it is way too loud, way too hot, and uses a boat-load of power. And I don’t mean like sitting next to a running house fan loud. I mean sitting next to a jet engine loud. Like if you are in a data center behind this equipment, you struggle to have a conversation with a guy a foot from you.

  But if you got a nice cool basement and you never have to pay for power, you can get lots of good stuff relatively cheap.

• Yeah this is the part about all this AGI talk and AI going rogue, it requires a prompt. It responds to an input. These agentic systems have powerful tools that can do other things then spit out text but it’s always responding to a prompt. It may be in a loop responding to its own prompt but it’s still a prompt. And what it spits out is never really anything new. It’s some derivation of what it’s ingested. Actual human intelligence works differently. We do come up with new ideas, new thoughts. So I’ve often thought these LLMs are a dead end to AGI.

• I’m assuming this is daisy chained. In a power strip there are not cables between the plugs that can be unplugged. Nor are there switches on each individual plug that can be accidentally flipped off. Any extra component is a failure mode. If it gets unplugged it loses power just the same as any failure. Now don’t get me wrong, I think this design is clean, expandable, and offers some neat features over a plain power strip, but to suggest there aren’t extra risks associated with this design is a bit short sighted.

• To me the graphics always look fine. The lighting might be slightly off but what really takes me out of it quick is the physics. When things don’t move right it’s off putting. Like the gravity is weird or the biomechanics are just wonky. Perfect example was some of the earlier spider-man movies. The web swinging especially. It just always looked off.

• What should really be the case is that the ring doorbell has a contact switch that works like a regular doorbell. When the doorbell is pressed it triggers the exact same thing a plain old doorbell used to do. Now all the other electronic and cloud functions are neat features and if they go down it’s no big deal.

• Here’s the thing, AI isn’t going away. Even when the bubble bursts, which it will, it’s a useful tool that can do useful things. I also don’t think in its current form it’s as useful or “necessary“ as the major tech bros want us to believe. I’d much prefer smaller models running on my hardware than just being controlled by a handful of those tech bros. But NVidia buying one of the major players in the local AI scene worries the shit out of me.

  But AI is just a tool. It’s not good or evil. I can use a hammer to build a house or bash someone’s skull in. It’s not the tools fault either way.

• Yeah I think the growth is going to be in these little models that think big. Like the Qwen3.8-flash idea. Using little tricks to make a small model perform better than it should. Localized AI is going to scale much better than being dependent on giant resource hogging DCs. And god forbid someone figure out how to chain these things together in some sort of peer to peer network utilizing all that processor time that goes unused throughout the day, like some sort of AI@home setup. Pretty sure that’s how Skynet starts.

• Most everything I do is local but I don’t trust AI anymore than I trust any other tool. If it gives code that works or instructions to do what I need great. Even when it’s wrong I’m learning something new.

  I totally agree about the billionaires. I absolutely don’t trust these dickheads running the shit show… Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, Elon Musk, Dario Amodei, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison… Fuck everyone of these guys. Everyone of them is a rich asshole trying to scheme as much as they can out of the system. I think their end goal is to put people out of work so they can automate as much as possible so they don’t rely on anything else. If AGI or superintelligence arrives within the decade, whoever controls it controls the economy that follows. It will be such a game changer nobody is even close to prepared for it.

  Go read “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream” by Harlan Ellison, Hyperion by Dan Simmons, Colossus by D.F. Jones, or maybe Accelerando by Charles Stross. None of these end well.
