Oh yes, I would imagine so. I just think that certain percentage of their potential customers will be turned away by it and so overall good chunk of the extra money they would get from the ads to balance out loss of sales would end up going to Microsoft instead.

I was just thinking about that. I can’t imagine Microsoft licencing it cheaply, so I would think other companies would be losing money over this.

If anything, Microsoft made us a favour. (As long as they won’t continue their journey becoming Disney of gaming, I guess sigh)

While I agree people should oppose this, I really don’t think the head of Microsoft gaming decision or the current Microsoft CEO would care about your letter and most likely it wouldn’t even reach them.

Wow. I was just joking, I didn’t expect that to be a real thing.

I don’t like prediction markets, but I guess one good thing would be that it motivates investment into weather prediction models. Something we will need to improve even further, because of climate change.

I find it weird how many people actually blame GDPR for cookie banners. I mean, yes. I think they should have probably written the law a little bit better to avoid this situation. But malicious compliance is a thing in many laws.

I also hate how many websites are trying to blackmail me now with “pay or we use your data”

In all fairness, overdoing it is also telling. Like the reason why Tor browser has everything standardised is because you hide in a crowd.

But not reporting anything is making you stand out as well, if you report uniquely little information about yourself with some statistics and guesswork you can be fingerprinted as well.

Sometimes people try to hide everything about themselves not realising that makes them unique and easier to identify.

Ah yes, I’ve noticed lots of SEO consultant companies are trying to pivot into “we’ll help you to make AI scrape your website more so you show up in the AI search”.

I hadn’t seen the study before, thanks. That’s what I expected, honestly. I guess you could argue they are still building brand awareness, because people subconsciously note the brand as the source, but I don’t think that amounts to much.

Oh, definitely. They are reinventing the old portals concept. That’s why I don’t think Reddit actually wants to encourage the scraping (partly also because they sell data themselves to build LLM, but that’s another thing)

pro-AI for starters, lots of people aren’t happy with that. (this is related to the AI, but started long before then: ) their insistence on focusing on anything else but the actual browser, Firefox also occasionally changes (privacy related) settings after upgrade (Edit: as reported by users online) or when they installed extensions remotely to people’s browsers as part of some kind of promo (I believe it was Mr. Robot?).

There might be more, but this is what I can think of from the top of my head.

I don’t know specifics about pictures about video, but considering I get data protection notice just so they can process my basic information when dealing with NHS, I imagine this is an offence that could make the doctor easy to sue over this.

That’s the same logic like “there’s no point in gun control, people can use knives”. People don’t like to be recorded without their knowledge and consent, whether you use smart glasses or other cameras.

Yes, people use these smart glasses for stuff that’s not creepy and invading people’s privacy - I’ve seen people use them for recipe videos and such. Cool. You can also achieve the same with other cameras. That’s really not an argument to normalise them in public or private settings involving other people who haven’t consented to it.
