What’s your budget and what do you want to play? I haven’t kept up with device reviews for a while, but here’s what I had in my mind at last reading:
FYI: if you’re destitute, then your smartphone and existing ancient PC will still be able to emulate more games than you know what to do with.

Budget: Mangmi Air X (up to PSP, gamecube and some 3DS)

financially comfortable: Retroid Pocket 6 (up to many modern PC games and most Switch emulation)

Trust fund: some top tier Ayn device
These devices have come a long way and come in every form factor and budget. There are loads of videos to watch. Don’t worry about pre-loaded games, you’ll be doing all that yourself. But that’s one of the things you have to enjoy: hours of setup and figuring stuff out.
Retro Game Corps is a great place to start and their device database will be the place to go to compare devices.

In the UK for many years your sim card is on “adult content protection” by default and needs ID submission to the mobile operator for adult content access over mobile internet. Sucks, but that’s nothing new.
Haven’t heard of anything about this being done on a device level.

Bed and electric blanket are the place for that warm relaxation. Hot shower is an expensive and suboptimal way to get this. If you want that fresh clean feeling then have a quick low flow shower before getting in bed. And wash your bedding regularly.

It’s rare to need the analog input of triggers, but it is needed occasionally. I set my controller to trigger buttons and haven’t changed them back in over a year.
I can’t imagine a controller being cheap enough to be worthwhile modding to hall effect joysticks and that being worth the price+work. The GameSir Cyclone 2 is the controller I have and it is top tier. TMR sticks and microswitches L2+R2 option. Secondhand this often comes up on eBay for £25.

I would go a step further. Block notifications from the vast majority of apps. Besides messaging apps, there are very few apps that I need to see any notifications for. Even for apps like Lemmy, replies and DMs can be seen when the app is next opened, no need to bother me before I’m going to open the app anyway.
I’ve even got WhatsApp blocked. My wife and closest family are on Signal anyway. Any messages on WhatsApp can wait. I never go longer than 30 to 60 min without checking my phone anyway so I’ll check into WhatsApp from time to time. So far, without notifications, nothing bad has happened for the past year.

Excellent hack.
In case you’re a masochist like me and want a lot more work on your hands, then you could remove the whole laptop mobo and make its own case and make it more compact in the process.
I’ve done this recently to make a standalone machine out of a busted laptop. This can give you a single, more compact unit with all the parts inside. You can improve the cooling and noise too (by using desktop fans). You’ll maintain your laptop resale value too by not destroying the case and being able to put the mobo back in place in the future. Infact, with today’s ram prices, the reason I went down this route is because you can get broken laptops with soldered in DDR5 ram.
