There was a study just recently about exactly this, smart devices creating a rogue mesh and routing traffic across neighbors’ devices until they could phone home with all your data anyway

It’s a built-in Gimp texture. It’s like the monkey face in Blender. If you see the green pepper in an image, you know the image was made in the Gimp. It’s like a cheeky signature/nod.
