It also corrupts, but by association with other rich assholes. But to get to that level, you need to have no morals.
Also money separates you from reality. These tech ceos often have entire wings of the headquarters to themselves, hidden behind private security. With only yes men left to talk to.
It does sometimes lead to good outcomes, like when Steve Jobs thought that a fucking insane diet would cure his (at the time) fairly treatable cancer.

on No Man's Sky 10th anniversary Cosmos update is here, and that means orbital bases, space station ownership - and yes, you can finally fly to the sun in c/games@lemmy.world · 9 Sep 2026
The “gameplay loop” of the elevator broke and then my ship blew up for no fucking reason.
The game breaking bugs outnumber the features.
But Chris Roberts has another ship to sell you, so you pay $50 and eat it all up.

on I got a cast iron frying pan! Any advice looking after it? in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 Sep 2026
Worker safety is good. But even with the finer casting sand, they weren’t actually finishing their pans.
All castings need to be finished to get that non-stick surface.

Here’s an advanced tip. Go buy some sandpaper. You want to start at something like 200 grit and go up to 1000 if you can find it.
See, modern (and some old) cast iron is low quality and far too rough. But if you sand it super smooth and then reseason it, it will be the best pan you’ve ever used.
High quality cast iron is already finished like this, but companies like Lodge ignore this step.

Your confusion comes from expecting logic from authoritarianism.
All of these “strongman” style dictators are surrounded by yes-men bootlickers who never tell the dictator the actual truth, because telling the truth is what got their predecessor fired.
Ego ahead of all else, thinking that might makes right even when reality disagrees on both counts.

So the compromise is they get cameras, and we get to hunt them for sport.
We’ve just not been holding up our end of things.

The chapters I said to skip are the religious stuff.
The rest is mostly about AI and why we maybe shouldn’t.

Have you read his Encyclical?
There are many things that I disagree with the pope about, but it’s well reasoned and argued, you can mostly skip the first two chapters, but three through five are worth a read.

1880?
Their brains weren’t pure, they were thoroughly pickled in various distilled liquors. Which since most transportation of the day knew its way back home, that was fine.
Days are shorter than months, which are shorter than years.
Makes sense to go with smallest to largest.
