• For recording in cells, the glasses would be caught by the regular scanners used at various security boundaries including upon entry to custody, at least every time I’ve been detained. Is that not normal in the US?

  I mean, critical support to Meta I guess. They finally figured out a real use case for their glasses. Albeit a very limited one because there’s already hidden cameras people can wear on their body, all of which are easily detectable when they search you before chucking you into a cell.

  Yes, so the biggest centralised social medias that run most of the modern web. Of which Reddit is a part.

  tbh I don’t think it is on reddit either.

  Really depends on what you moderate. Some subreddits deal with culture war warriors sending rape threats, doxxing, brigading, etc. I used to mod a subreddit where another mod had to delete her account because she was doxxed by kiwifarms.

• But moderation of centralised social media is usually done by paid workers. Subreddits are not independent forums; Reddit admins interfere all the time, and they’re hosted on Reddit servers so ultimately are at the mercy of Reddit’s decisions.

  I don’t think Wikipedia contributions are comparable to subreddit moderation. Moderation is known for being traumatising work (see: lawsuits from global south workers over PTSD from seeing CSAM, snuff, and other traumatising content when doing underpaid moderation work) and I don’t think there are many moderators who do it for fun. They may do it voluntarily because they like a community or think their subreddit/forum is a valuable resource they want to maintain. But not because the labour of moderation itself is fun. Meanwhile I imagine most Wikipedia contributors do so because they are interested in the topic, and it’s far less likely to expose editors to traumatising content.

• I mean, Wikipedia still refused to recognise the union. They have to now given the results of the vote. And I’m sure they get more than enough in donations anyway. They did before the dispute with their workers, and I doubt enough people boycotted Wikipedia over it for it to mean that Wikipedia can’t cover their costs.

• 100k/12≈8k, including taxes, after taxes idk depends where you live. My rent is the majority of my income, and I make much less than that, so the absolute amount of money I have after paying for things like rent and utilities, to spend on food, is much less too, even if we assume the same % of income going to rent. Again I’m not saying things aren’t more expensive in the US, but it is still a lot of money. You aren’t going to be struggling financially. My friends in the US make much less than that. Maybe you’d be less well-off than peers who do the same job, but I hope you realise that for a lot of people elsewhere in the world, that’d be 3 salaries already.

• That’s fair. Which models did you have? I had a couple problems with the earlier Google Pixels, but I’ve found the later ones have really ironed out their hardware problems.

  I think your main problem is going to be finding phones for cheap that also work well as Linux phones. I think the lowest-effort options like Pine phones are gonna cost you more. But I wish you luck.

• Ah ok, sorry I read that as correcting me and got confused. But yes, you are right, it is a fingerprint, the point is to just share as much of your fingerprint as possible with other users to make it hard to differentiate you.

  My comment was about how the OP website has a line that claims that the reported timezone/language is the “truth” rather than my IP address, and I was just pointing out that that wasn’t the case.

• A small point but it assumes that your browser’s self-declared timezone is “true” to where you live. My timezone is spoofed to UTC+0; my VPN server is in a different country; and my browser language is set to en-us. I feel like if you see a user whose settings are all of the above then you can assume that none of those three data points actually describe the user, unless they coincidentally are a US English speaker or live in UTC+0, but that’d just be them coincidentally living where anti-fingerprinting browsers report you as.
