Steel is a lot more tricky as generally fossil fuels are burnt directly inside the blast furnace. There are a few alternative “green steel” processing routes that avoid this but iirc none of them are hugely competitive at the moment.

I had a vague headcanon that, within the wh40k lore, 95% of the horrific threats to humankind are made-up by the Adeptus Ministorum to keep the factory worlds in line, and what they call ‘Chaos’ and describe as winged monsters is really just a rebellion against the imperium by people who are realising they’ve had the wool pulled over their eyes for millenia.

on Your reminder to remove the microphone from your TV remote today in c/privacy@lemmy.ml · 9 Sep 2026
I’m tempted to try this but I’m not sure how to identify the microphone or whether it would be in my remote or the TV itself. Is there some sort of guide on doing this?

Eh I’ve never really disliked Gordon Brown. He was part of the whole neoliberal new-labour thing, but unlike Blair he seemed genuinely sincere about wanting to improve things in the long-term.

on Linus Torvalds says AI has made 'huge' Linux kernel updates the new normal in c/technology@lemmy.world · 11 Aug 2026
I don’t think many people are against the existence of LLM-based AI in general, just the way it’s being pushed currently.
In the hands of highly experienced and skilled people it can be very valuable - the issue is that it generally isn’t. Personally I think Linus has demonstrated that he’s more than capable of using it intelligently and responsibly.

on New sodium-ion battery skips mechanical cooling with 97.9% efficiency in c/technology@lemmy.world · 11 Aug 2026
Presumably because Na+ ions are the active charge carriers.
Transistors are the basic building blocks of computer chips. Theyre essentially things which can be ‘on’ or ‘off’.
The traditional transistors use something called a p-n junction. To make one of these, we need to carefully implant impurity atoms into silicon in a very specific concentration gradient.
When transistors get very small, it becomes extremely difficult to make this concentration gradient just right. Which is a limits how small the p-n junction can be.
The new gate-all-around transistors are shaped completely different, and are more like 3D structures than 2D patterns. And, crucially, they dont require p-n junctions. Which means we’re not limited by how small we can make concentration gradients, but instead by how small we can make these structures. Which is a lot smaller.
The fact that China is getting better at this means that high-performance computer chips may get cheaper as production wont be dominated by TSMC/ASML.
