Don’t forget to that your call, regardless of any transmission protection, isn’t private if there’s anyone within earshot of either participant.

You mentioned you have VDSL. So you’ll still need your VDSL modem.
You will probably be able to configure it in pass-through mode or something similar so it will only do the modem functions and not the routing functions.
Then you can use anything you like as a router.
I use OpnSense on a dirt cheap ex-lease x86 SFF desktop. I also filled it with PCIe NIC’s. The only down side of that is it’s power-draw.

Fortunately I use linux at work and at home for years now.
The rest of my family apparently hate themselves and use windows… I can now just use the excuse that it’s too long since I’ve used windows and can’t help.

It being a custom AMD APU will certainly help.
It’s still probably easier than trying to get anything to run on an Arm SOC and fighting device trees.

Back in the before times we called that a ‘dividend’ and the company would pay you one of they did business well and made profit.
Then the dark times came and the ‘speculators’ arrived, caring not for the dividend but for the price itself. Expecting it to go ever on up. The dividend was forgotten.
Business didn’t have to be good and profitable it just had to have ‘promise’ and ‘venture’. They propped each other up, made their prices up. Each leaning on each other with no foundation each nor to share. They cared not, for they had a ‘system’ and means already their own to sustain themselves.
The people looked on in horror, knowing the ‘bubble’ must burst in the air and not settle gently to the ground and rest easy. Power they had not, only the ‘sight’ of their incoming doom.
