  I don’t actually need it there, but I was interested to know if it would work, and it did. So now I know that my fridge maintains a steady 5⁰C.

• I’m not a business guy by any means, but it hit me a while ago that the majority of huge companies aren’t really driven by sales of their core products now, like how you’ll buy an appliance from an electrical store on finance offered by a company they own. They make more money from the banking and investment, to the point that the original point of the firm is a vestigial interest.

  They don’t have to give a shit about the customer when the money they make is, to some extent, self-sustaining. As long as someone else is paying people, their income will keep on keeping on.

  The trouble is, more and more companies are doing all they can to stop paying people.

  And here we are.

• Bold of you to assume they have any certs.

  Of the two of them, one used to work for IBM, but that was some years ago, so his up to date knowledge is barebones at best. His world is Windows. Give him XP or 7 and he’d be well away I imagine. The other lad is mostly about the infrastructure and networking, but again, has only ever used Windows. So that’s their comfort zone. And then there’s the boss’s son who administrates things remotely, rarely answers any emails in a satisfactory way, and refuses to give admin access away, even to the other two.

  To be fair, the computer policies here were non existent until a few months ago, when landing a huge contract meant having to actually comply with cybersecurity requirements. So until that point I used first my old Mac mini, because I was more at home with macOS than Windows, then a tiny Dell Optiplex that I put Kubuntu on. No one gave a shit and that suited me just fine. In fact, I was given to understand that I’d be left alone when all the new PCs with Win11 were rolled out, largely because, until that point, mine was the only one running actual up-to-date software, while everyone else was on Win10.

  But here we now are. And so it goes.

• Yep. Most of the past couple of months have been spent poking and prodding at the boundaries to see what I can get away with, and I can install a bunch of stuff via winget.

  I’ve even taught myself how to jump to my server at home using SSH via my VPS so I can access stuff even without being allowed Tailscale.

  In a way it’s quite fun. A small way.

• I wish I could, but I don’t have the admin rights necessary to activate it.

  Fortunately we’re a reasonably small firm, so I may be able to make an argument for it. And in the meantime, I have a dashboard server running Debian onto which I have also installed a bunch of useful tools that I can either get to with my browser, or SSH into.

• I have to use Windows at work. It’s genuinely horrifying.

  Every time I open Word - and I mean EVERY. TIME. - I have to dismiss a box inviting me to ask Copilot to do my work for me.

  I KNOW that I could bung Debian on that PC and wring SO MUCH MORE performance out of it, but noooooo, I’ve got to use SlopOS, because our IT guys don’t know the first damn thing about Linux.

• I started doing a radio show / podcast on an online station a couple of years ago. To start with I just put it on their site and Mixcloud and that was that.

  But 18 months ago I had to part ways with them, so figured I’d probably just carry on doing it and putting it on Mixcloud. But I needed somewhere to stream live, so I had to put together a website.

  Long story short; yeah, I now have my own website, with Owncast and Icecast subdomains and my show is available as a podcast that has an RSS feed.

  As an added bonus, seeing as I already have a VPS, I’ve created a bunch of subdomains that I use to redirect some services that are hosted on my home server.

  It’s fun.

• I’ve been pondering doing this to a broken iMac I’ve got.

  It got donated to me by someone who needed to thin out his studio a bit, so it didn’t cost me a penny. But I took the screen off to give it a clean out and repaste, apparently didn’t tape it in place securely enough as a temporary measure, so the screen fell off. And smashed.

  I did some swearing.

  However, it’s still a surprisingly handy spec. 3.5ghz i5, 24gb RAM and a Radeon GPU. So I’ve been wondering about pulling the guts and turning it into a desktop, then making it my home server to replace the 2014 Mac mini I currently use.

• Mine is my dad’s old 2014 Mac mini with a bunch of USB hard drives hanging out of it.

  Ideal? Probably not.

  But it mostly works pretty well. All I’ve bought specifically for it are the NVME adapter so I could drop my wife’s old 256gb M.2 drive in, a 1tb SATA SSD for the internal bay, and a 3.5” enclosure for a 2tb HDD I had knocking about.

  And she’s rock solid. Mostly.

• What kinda fucks me up - though I accept that I’m not a developer, so can’t profess to fully understanding all of this - is that to make apps for Apple devices you have to have a relatively new Mac that can support a version of Xcode that can in turn support the latest version of iOS.

  So you have to pay them £100 a year to be a registered developer. AND you have to shell out £1500 (minimum) every few years for a new Mac in order to stay current. And then they tell you have to throw them a tithe every time your app makes any money at all, even if you’re not selling your app through the App Store, or using Apple’s own payment systems.

  That’s triple dipping, right?

• People in these parts will throw shade at macOS, and I get it. But whatever you think of Apple, they’ve traditionally done a pretty good job of making their OS such that you don’t really need a manual unless you start doing more complex stuff. Someone who’s not particularly computer literate can buy a cheap Mac and have it up and running in no time, without ever really needing to seek help.

• Being unaware of pinchflat, I kinda ended up making my own.

  Started off with a little app, the entirety of which was a button that, when pressed, took the link om my clipboard and downloaded the video into my Jellyfin folder. Then I got tired of having to keep it all updated across several different computers I use, so I turned it into something that runs in a docker container on my home server, that I can access through anything in my tailnet. Works beautifully.
