It really doesn’t unless you’re dumb enough to buy in and play the game but Russia is basically a big mafia and you’re one bad dinner away from offering some brain dead asshole that will end you. While you can just go live on the beach in Thailand and no ine will ever bother you. People underestimate the actual brain drain that is happening. Life is just too good for skilled Russians elsewhere to even bother. This is what societal collapse looks like.

Maybe it could be great but good devs have the privilege to avoid this risk and go work abroad. I live in thailand and I speak russian so I’m familiar with russian devs escaping russia and tbh it’s very easy these days with how easy it is to open a company in Singapore or Delaware.
Worth noting that rolling your own country wide spying distro wouldn’t be as easy as one might think given that Linux kernel dev must follow US sanctions and there is some serious work there when it comes to hiding spyware effectively for at least plausible deniability, russia is not quite North Korea just yet.

Auto factories are well known for providing above average working conditions and career paths for their workers in China (high skill, robots). This is one product you would want to buy to support worker rights in China which notoriously have almost no rights or representstion.

Possibly but you need the context of how actually bad facebook ads moderation is. We already seen almost a billion euro fines for this and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. I work adjecent to scam prevention and facebook ads are notorious for scams and Meya is intentionally loose with moderation because ads make shit ton of money and scammer’s dollars are just as good as any.
So realistically it Meta benefiting from scams rather than pushing some agenda through ads which is still incredibly bad if not worse.

People are reading into this way too hard. This seems like an ad attack which is nothing new on Facebook. As you can target by user preference using: “oh this person from your feed but now naked” to bait a click is classic personalized ad attack. Facebook ads platform needs to be abolished altogether - it’s incredibly unsafe.
Very deceiving article title by arstechnica, disappointing.

We already have a perfectly good policy framework for datacenters: just charge them the negative externality costs. The problem is that they want datacenters now and repay external costs like electricity, water etc later because it takes 1 year to build a datacenter but 5 years to route power and water.
We already solve for this with economic credits but people just don’t trust these systems because of corruption and poor governance. The credits never trickle down to people who pay for externalities.
This is not even a datacenter issue.

The problem with majority of “LLM critics” is that they are brain dead luddites that argue with ragebait emotion rather than rationality.
Unsurprisingly LLMs are just computers that can be useful, can be wasteful, can be life saving and can be society destroyed - it’s a tool.

Missing my point entirely that Chinese people literally can’t do that.
Also it’s very hard to get into Chinese internet from the west too with this one exception almost everything is either geo blocked or requires Chinese id/phone number.

It’s not for us to decide that. CCP is literally holding Chinese hostage and even if this platform comes to the west the Chinese will never be allowed to mingle with us.
I think chinese internet is very interesting and wish China would be part of global internet one day but until autocrats change their mind it’s not happening.

This binary distinction you’re making doesn’t exist in any serious scientific literature. I literally have a degree in information technology and have been following this subject for over 30 years now - there’s no real distinction between “knowledge” and intelligence. In fact, compression itself is literally intelligence.
