This kind of deniability is a core feature of AI. “Um, the killing/hacking robots we built and pointed at targets went out of control” is not something that should mitigate criminal charges.

OK cool. I’m just getting started with this stuff. Met with friends about Reticulum last night, and a different group about Meshtastic tomorrow.

Wdym? Reticulum is super promising, but it needs a path, no? I could well be misunderstanding, but Meshtastic is more like “infrastructure”. You can actually send Reticulum over Meshtastic/Meshcore (though you may choke the network :/). Seems to me that even if you’re excited about Reticulum, you’d still want those Meshtastic networks built out.

on For those looking to migrate away from Mullvad VPN, what are some alternatives that the community recommends? in c/privacy@lemmy.ml · 5 Sep 2026
Depends on your reason for using a VPN. Presumably your Njalla VPS has a static IP address. I like being able to rotate servers if one is being blocked by a given service (ie YouTube).

on What is your cloud backup solution? in c/selfhosted@lemmy.world · 30 Aug 2026
Running server backs up to two local disks which can each hold 2 days at a time, but they both hold the same 2 days. Every night the most recent backup is uploaded offsite (friend’s house) where is stored versions in a normal scheme.

So… huh? What role does this play, since all the lines in the picture have $1? If you run it with arg1, won’t it run them all? And if you left out arg1 and also didn’t add $1 to each line, wouldn’t it also just run all of them?

I don’t get it. Looks like a script that runs all these things, but I don’t get the one dollar.

Looks really cool. I’ve been using own tracks with Nextcloud, but it’s not very reliable, especially with my wife’s iPhone. Unfortunately for me, Reitti hasn’t been packaged for Yunohost yet, but I will keep an eye on it!

on The fact that you can’t run through Windows setup w/o internet and an online account is absolute bullshit in c/linuxmemes@lemmy.world · 26 Aug 2026
I genuinely think you may just be more familiar with PS. I use “Get-Printer” all the time, but it’s not like I was able to discover that command or syntax without web searches. Same with “cp” in bash. I had to learn it and use it, but I’m never going to forget it now. Something that seems inconsistent/unintuitive to me in PS, is some commands specify an object with:
-Name ="the name"Other times it’s like:
Name "the name"I keep a notebook handy for things that I use as frequently as several times a week.

In bash if you type the verb, then hit tab it will list the possible options, right? Is that not the same kind of thing?

Is it? I find them both equally unintuitive tbh. You really just have to memorize the commands you frequently use, or keep looking them up.

on Chinese video platform Bilibili is going global to challenge Youtube in c/technology@lemmy.world · 21 Aug 2026
These reactions just seem a little overwrought to me. I’m sure everyone commenting watches plenty of YouTube, but the mere mention of a Chinese platform brings dire warnings and energetic condemnations. Like maybe it does suck, but most people here wouldn’t really know! That’s my point-- that it’s crazy to have such strong opinions about something that you have no experience with.

I just dislike the traditional framing of things like “unfair” in contexts like this. It’s always been used by dominant powers to destroy any domestic capacity. In this example, if China had never put up any barriers to foreign tech, they would have none of their own at all by now.

People in this thread having a normal one, predictably. Like even if (or especially if) you genuinely believe that China is the evil monster you were raised to believe, wouldn’t you be at least a little bit curious to get a window into their online culture? Don’t you want an opportunity for more interaction between Chinese and US/Western netizens?
