Provenance has never been something you can guarantee with code in an open contribution model (which is not the only way of governing an open source project). For all you know the code could be copy and pasted from a proprietary codebase, or be the product of third party who’s work is being plagiarised by the submitter. A software project is ultimately a community and is build on trust and faith that people are acting in good faith. The kind of person who would deliberately (and gleefully as I’ve seen in some social media posts) go into a community and violate its stated values and standards, no matter how arbitrary and illegitimate they feel those are, has bigger character flaws to worry about than their reliance on stochastic parrots to write code.
‘No AI’ rules are ultimately about fostering certain community values and norms than guaranteeing no LLM code makes it in.

AI code bans may be impossible to enforce in the first place
I hate this attitude that if a rule or standard can’t be enforced perfectly, we shouldn’t strive for it. We can’t (reasonably) run an OS free of proprietary software, does that mean the free software movement should just give up?

I bet you don’t own or like an absolute gob of them but it doesn’t change their usefulness
I was commenting based on my experience with this stuff, it was a lot of work to set up and the results I got were bad. I never even contended that it could be useful (but I’m reading selectively), I said you that you need decent hardware for it to be useable. I have an RX 6800 XT and 32GB of RAM and it was really slow, even with recommended models.
Jfc why even comment if you’re gonna be so dumb and selective with your reading?

Just because you don’t understand a tool or how to properly use it does not mean someone else doesn’t.
You brought up the Kimi model up in a conversation about local models being viable, something that requires 8 Nvidia GB300s as a prerequisite. And I’m sorry I don’t follow you’re little hobby close enough for you, I did try it and it sucked.

If you want something useable you need a decent amount of RAM/VRAM and a modern GPU, things that aren’t exactly accessible these days. That Kimi model is apparently half a terabyte in size and requires 100s of GB of VRAM, so I don’t know why you’re saying it’s a ‘local’ model.

Good article! It’s always interesting to see the ecosystems that spring up around these devices, even if the Thor itself doesn’t interest me (my main console growing up was the 360).
Just a heads up, the first link in the article (the metrics one) 404s.
They’re not EU based, but libro.fm is good for DRM-free audiobooks.
